Sadith slammed the mug onto the floor, almost cracking the brittle wood. "Vor, this is disgusting." Vor looked up and laughed. "You're drinking the wrong stuff. I use that for cleaning. I'm surprised that you got it down at all." Sadith shook his head, lips curving slowly upward. "I'm a miner - I've had worse." He drained the mug and handed it back to the librarian. "How, exactly, does one get out of here?" Instantly all eyes were on the miner. "Why?" Vor asked. "Scouting. I'm restless. How much do you know about this area?" "Not much," Vor admitted. "I spent most of my time inside before the demons came, and I do my best to keep it that way now. A librarian can't do much against a demon horde, not by himself." "Could I borrow some parchment and charcoal, then? I'll make us a map." Vor searched for the materials and handed them reluctantly to Sadith. "Don't waste it - I don't have much to spare." "Understood. Would anyone else like to come?" The priests and the mage are useless, Sadith thought. Useless for scouting, he corrected himself, at least until they've rested. Raymond lay on a pile of straw on the floor, far from consciousness. Sylvian followed his gaze. "Best not to disturb him. He'll need the energy later. I'll come." "No," Sadith said immediately. The suspicion returned to the group's eyes. "I mean, you must remain safe. Your arm... you should sleep. Heal. This ritual won't be easy." "Yes. I suppose you're right," the priest responded, sitting down uneasily. "Be careful, and avoid the demons. Don't try anything heroic." That's your job, Sadith thought, smiling inwardly. "You have nothing to worry about. Vor?" The hole reappeared. "Thank you. I'll return soon." He stepped out into the open, positioning himself to start on the map. The entrance closed behind him. With one hand resting on the sword and the other clutching the map-making materials, Sadith crept cautiously towards the temple. A minute later, the entrance opened again and the librarian peered out. Seeing no-one and nothing around, he stepped outside and shut the door quietly, casting a spell to blend himself with his surroundings. He sat down to watch Sadith's progress, wishing that someone had gone with him. If he went over to the demons now, how could they stop him? -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon TEH CONSPIRACY IZ ALL In case of emergency, break glass. Vegetarian debate + FBM = non-annoying posts. I'm lovin' it. Omlette, my point was that his "anti-vegetarian" thing basically called meat-eaters brainless, which seems more pro- than anti-vegetarian to me. BtI's post summed up my opinion as well, except for that last part... I don't see why so many meat-eaters have to be gruesome about it, but whatever. -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon TEH CONSPIRACY IZ ALL In case of emergency, break glass. "Sadith! Praise Hiram, you're alive! Where are the others?" Sadith shot a glance at Vor as Raymond came into the open. "There, and everywhere else in this goddamned valley, I suppose. I lost track. But who is he?" "You don't remember Vor? No, maybe not - you were always at opposite end of the val-" "Vor?" Sadith exclaimed, peering closer. "By the gods, it is! You look as if you haven't eaten a thing since I last saw you!" "Roots, leaves, whatever I can get," Vor replied. "A harsh existance, but when the temple's under attack..." "Speaking of which," Ray put in, hefting a spear, "where's Garath?" "Who?" "A filthy traitor," Sylvian spat, his eyes glowing with righteous zeal. "Sold his soul for demonic power. If I ever get the chance..." he fingered the mace at his belt. "He's probably in that camp right now, plotting the destruction of the temple -" "No," Vor interjected. "He's already in the temple. In fact, he's the reason that you see that camp - otherwise, it would already be inside. Assuming that he's been made into some sort of leader, that is." "Yes, he has," Sylvian replied suspiciously. "How do you know so much about him?" "Sylvian..." the priest shifted his gaze to Sadith. "The man's as pure as he should be. I see no darkness in him. My eyes... well, the gods have made the best out of an otherwise loathsome situation. The demons... I was in torment... oh, the pain... God-" "Snap out of it," Sylvian ordered. The shaking stopped, and Sadith smiled weakly. "Thanks. Anyway, I trust Vor. And regardless of Garath's location and position, I'd say we should find and rescue the mage before it's too late. He's in that camp somewhere. Ideas, any of you?" -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon TEH CONSPIRACY IZ ALL In case of emergency, break glass. "Raymond, duck!" The spearman looked back at Sadith in confusion. Watching the black dot get closer, Sadith launched himself at Ray. "Hey, WHAT ARE YOU-" Another explosion cut him off. "Saving your life." "Right, right. Where is he?" Squinting, Sadith focused his gaze into the trees. "Heading the other way, for some reason. This is odd. He's almost completely grey, just like Chadussid, but where Chadussid had a white border, he's got a black center. What did you say his name was?" "Hmm? I don't know. What are you talking about, black center? Now is not the time for poetry." "No, no, it's my eyes, they - I'll explain later. He doesn't have Eferas." "What?" "When I first saw him, Eferas was shining like a beacon! I see no white around that man. Eferas is either somewhere else, or corrupted by the demonic influence. Either way, following the corpsman can only do us harm. We should get back to Ch-" "Quiet!" Sadith looked at Raymond questioningly. "What's-" Raymond held up a finger. "Imp," he whispered, raising the spearthrower. Sadith noticed the little beast coming from the trees. "Don't waste your spear," he whispered back. Raymond lowered the spearthrower but kept his muscles tense. For naught; as soon as the imp was within range, Sadith pounched, snapping its neck before it could react. It died with a pitiful little squeak. "Good kill, S-" This time it was Sadith who silenced Raymond. "Listen." Both men kept perfectly still as they listened to the voice wafting through the trees. "...hideously incompetant... cannon fodder... good riddance... Sylvian... pet corpsman... very malleable... following orders..." "So Chaddussid was right -" "Eferas!" Raymond exclaimed, eyes lighting up. He made as if to go towards the voice, but Sadith put out a hand to stop him. "Stop," he hissed. "The dark traitor has Eferas, not the grey one. This imp must have been his. Who knows what else he has around him? Listen." "...what you did was evil." Both men flinched at Garath's harsh laughter. What could corrupt a man like that? Sadith thought. I thought no one could be tortured worse than I was. What did they do to him? Listening to Garath, Sadith couldn't help but pity him. "Power, then, is the only absolute." All pity washed out of Sadith's heart, and he noticed Raymond's set jaw twitching. So that was it. He had sold his soul to the devil. Whatever he gets, then, he deserves. The voices dropped lower, and both men leaned in closer. They missed the first sentence. Then: "...never aid... demonkind, Garath. I will only... you." They looked at each other, horrified. Only what? Help? It was understandable - even the greatest mages had soft spots, and Sadith had been ready to help Garath himself, if he had been asked. But then he had heard the reason for Garath's corruption, and now realized that a mage would have even more of a thirst for power than another man. He could see the white draining out of him now, dissappearing from the valley when it was most needed, drained by the dark energies of the demon lord and his tool, Garath... "You told me, the minds of men are mallable. This is just another mind trick. I don't believe you at all." The vision vanished, and Sadith smiled. So the white mage would fight to the last; cornered, abused, possibly surrounded by demons, he had rejected an offer of inconceivable power. And when he heard the threat and the slam of the door, his mind was already made up - he would save the mage or die trying. He waited half a minute to give Garath time to move outside of hearing range; then, grabbing Raymond's arm, he crept from the brush, moving rapidly towards the hatch above the tunnel. -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon TEH CONSPIRACY IZ ALL In case of emergency, break glass. Running again, running from the demons. Sadith found it hard to remember ever doing anything else. The sword banged against his shin as he ran, panting, through the dark forest. An imp sprang up and he knocked it down; mining made one strong very quickly. He heard a voice and he stopped. That fool, that goddamned fool Raymond, he though. What was he doing here? Shouldn't he be back with Chadussid? So should I, he though, but the demons... looking over his shoulder once more, he ran in the direction of Raymond's voice. "Raymond! It's Sadith! Where are you?" The crashing stopped. "Sadith? Who?" "The miner! Raymond, you fool, where are you?" The spearman exploded out of the bushes, spear launcher pointed straight at his heart. Seeing Sadith's face, Raymond's mouth opened and he pulled back. "You! I thought you were dead!" "You're lucky not to be, yourself. Are you alone?" Raymond fingered the launcher nervously. "Why?" "Because we're in the middle of dark, hostile woods, surrounded by demons!" Sadith shouted. "You're stupid, but you're on the right side. I can see that. Where's Chadussid? Where's the wizard?" "Oh, Eferas? He's... I don't know, actually. He was unconscious, and now he's gone. The corpsman might have him." "Chadussid?" "The other one." Raymond waved the bit of cloth. "Another corpsman? Why did they send more than-" An explosion cut him off. Both men ducked instinctively as shards of glass flew over their heads. Sadith turned towards the flash of grey; it quickly disappeared back into the bushes. "What was-" "That's why! Damnit, I forgot about the bombs!" "He has Eferas?" Sadith shouted. "Let's go!" Raymond hefted the launcher and Sadith drew his sword, and they ran off into the bushes after the wounded corpsman. -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon TEH CONSPIRACY IZ ALL In case of emergency, break glass. "He's right." Chadussid whirled around, leveling the crossbow at the lump huddled in the corner. The lump stirred. "He's right," Sadith said again, getting up and walking slowly towards Chadussid. "Get them out of the tunnel. That fool Law doesn't recognize me. I told them not to build tunnels. They didn't listen. Law is probably the only one of them still alive, and that proves only that there is a God." Chadussid lowered the bow. "Who are you?" "Not now. We are surrounded, grey one. It's suicidal to leave the bunker. It's suicidal to stay in the bunker. But if we go through those tunnels, we'll end up their sla-" Sadith was cut off by a terrified scream. Another followed, then another, as figures began pouring out of the tunnel. "Attack!" "Demons!" "Oh gods, oh gods!" "They've started already! Rey, get them the hell out of there!" Chadussid shouted, trying to be heard above the chaos. He didn't need help; those inside the tunnel felt exactly the same way. The last adventurer tripped and fell through the trap door, into the bunker, his left arm ripped off completely. A bolt was shot through the door, back at the demons, and a shrill cry made Sadith cringe. So close, so close, oh God, oh God... the tide of black was returning, he could see nothing, nothing, just darkness... "RUN!" Sadith screamed, grabbing the fallen adventurer's sword. Chadussid led the party through the shattered entrance, out into the hostile woods; Sadith tried to follow, swinging the sword wildly behind him at the rush of demons. Eferas saw him and grabbed him, summoning his strength for a flash of white fire; Sadith's vision cleared in time to see several demons writhing on the ground. They ran together, chasing the main body of adventurers as fast as possible, stopping sporadically to cut down any demons that got too close. Then Chadussid was by their side, firing potions into the oncoming masses, as the party hacked its way through the thinning demon seige. A bomb exploded close by, cutting a swath through the demon horde and hurling the three backwards; they hit the ground and rolled, and Chadussid helped the other two up. A glint of white flowed through his body, then faded into the grey once more. Taking one last look backwards, Sadith hurled a rock and ran. "To Selger! To Selger!" EDIT: Spelling. EDIT: Sorry, Alex, I typed this while you were posting. I kind of put yours into mine... anyway, if there are any inconsistencies, that's why. IC:"Gods damnit, priest, just get in!" Garath shouted, finally losing his patience. The safety and protection of the bunker was mere inches away, but they couldn't just leave the resisting priest outside... "I'll never give in! Never!" "Sylvian, how fond are you of your consciousness? You could either walk into the bunker, or be dragged into the bunker. Which do you prefer?" The priest snarled, looking back apprehensively at Eferas' staff. Finally he shook his head, ducked, and walked in, hand groping absently at his belt for the security of the mace. He found nothing, of course; Garath had made sure of that. Garath followed closely behind, keeping both eyes on Sylvian, while Eferas dragged the unconscious man in behind him and closed the bunker to the outside world. "Stop. Don't come any closer." "Oh, come on, Chadussid, you know who we are." "I know who you were. I also know that demons are fond of controlling the minds of humans, and that some can take on other shapes. You will drop your weapons and step into this circle where we can see you. Any sudden moves will be justly rewarded. And since when do we find random adventurers wandering around in the woods? Which of you decided to bring these in?" "That reminds me," Garath replied smugly. "Here's your priest. Sylvian." "A priest with a broken arm? Wonderful. He can't even heal himself. And what is this?" The other man groaned again, stirring. "He must be the mage, right? Which is why he was running so fast?" Chadussid indicated the scratch marks covering the man's body. What was this? he thought. He had seen only white since... since being struck... but here, here was something completely neutral. A man's shape, but a grey color. What was it doing in his vision? He opened his eyes. "The demons... are they gone?... Where am I?" "He's awake," Rey noted. Chadussid snorted in contempt; Rey blushed. "Get them both tied up. You. What is your name?" "Sadith," the man replied. "The two of you I can handle," Chadussid said to Eferas and Garath, "as long as you don't bring any more unknkown elements into our refuge. Kenthred, check Oskoth and Daniel. I want all six of you in the center of this bunker, away from all exits. Raymond, keep those weapons safe." Chadussid's orders were carried out and the two newcomers, both now fully conscious and partially healed, thanks to the potions, were positioned sitting on the floor, facing Chadussid. "Right then. Eferas, you say you were out scouting when these two both just ran into you. And you knocked them out with your staff, I understand. Isn't that a little too convenient?" Eferas shrugged. "They came running from the woods; we thought we were under attack. Would you rather that I had set them on fire? We were sent to look for survivors. Now we've found two. What is the problem with this?" "What is the problem?" Chadussid replied, teeth clenched together. "The problem is that you brought two potential hostiles into our previously safe bunker. You know that we're under attack. Why would you be so careless?" Sitting in the shadows, Kenthred spoke softly. "Maybe they're the traitors. Maybe Sadith or Sylvian is the murderer." A sudden fearful hush fell over the bunker. Outside, the wind whistled softly through the leaves. A distant rumble shook the valley. Everyone clutched their weapons, drawing away slightly. Sadith looked up at the grey man, surprised by the lack of hostility on the man's face. With such wild accusations, it was hard to feel safe anywhere, among anyone; even the white mage looked darker around the borders. But the grey man... nothing. And that frightened him even more than the growing darkness in the man above him, the one they called Garath. "Right," Chadussid murmurred, breaking the silence reluctantly. "If any of them moves so much as a toe, impale them. Let Oskoth and Daniel speak; if they were possessed, we'd know. De- demons can be... tricky." With that, he moved to the entrance, his back turned, hiding his face as best as possible. "If one of them reveals himself as a demon... kill them all." A drop of water formed on his dark, oily hair - the night was damp. Glistening in the moonlight, it began rolling down the strand of hair, picking up speed as it went. Finally it came to the end of the strand, paused, and then dropped onto his hand, shattering on contact. With a start, he woke up. The dream had been far too real, far too close. But the water was just water, he thought, looking down at his hand; if it had been the demon's acid, he knew, the hand would not be there. He groaned and pushed himself to his feet. Why had it seemed so real? He tried to remember. The demon chasing him, of course... the fire, crashing walls, exploding potions... but that would mean... Selger... He looked wildly around, suddenly realizing how close he was to the barricade. That twisted tree - could it be the same one he had rested under each day, scrawling figures in the sand, amazed at how much wealth was to be had in this valley? But it was young and green no longer. The demon invasion had turned it old, sinister; his demented vision showed it as black, where it should have been white. There was no white in this landscape, just the moon above. He looked towards the barricade once again. Was that a spark of light? He set off at a run, feeling refreshed from his rest on the forest floor. A shriek pierced the night air, and the bit of white was snuffed out. A low rumble shook the valley, showering him with debris and termites from the trees. He jumped backwards. A shadow rose from the barricade, drifting quickly towards the sky; it passed overhead, blotting out the moon momentarily, and then vanished. Even in the pale light of the moon, he could see nothing, only black; his mind was reeling. Then, suddenly, he saw a human shape coming towards him. He cried out in surprise and relief; the human saw him, came towards him. And with a start, he realized that the man was blacker even than the trees around him. He turned away in panic, consciously thinking no longer. Fear consumed him, and he ran. Four hours later, a shout startled him out of his trance. He opened his eyes and was immediately blinded by the light eminating from a small group directly in front of him.
