I'm pretty sure that Melee Weapons skill increases your unarmed accuracy and damage (it does for monsters in BoA, anyway.)

Regarding my title, it doesn't hurt that Kool-Aid Man's catchcry was also appropriated by Duff Man of The Simpsons fame, and I am of course known for my habitual drunkenness.

Can you explain what the difference between LOAD_SCEN and START_SCEN states? in Blades of Avernum Editor

The START_SCEN_STATE is what you use for any things that you only want to do at the start of the scenario. In general, the only things you want to put in the LOAD_SCEN_STATE are things which the documentation tells you to put there.

If you expect some players to spend more than a year in the scenario, you'll want to reset the SDF after the month is over (probably by setting it back to 0 in the code for the start of the next month).

It isn't. The vampire and the ogres are one obvious example of a mutually exclusive pair of quests; there may be more.

Jeff is also on the record as saying that he hates music in computer games.

As for making his own sound effects using a foley room and a microphone, that's not as easy as it looks.

Newer Spiderweb games that run natively under OS X should run fine on Intel Macs, though.

I think the aversion derives from the general impression that many of Avernum 4's monsters were designed to fit the graphics available, breaking continuity with the rest of the series in the process. Since when has Avernum been infested with "hellhounds", for example?

While it's hard to make an AI that actually plays in a realistically smart way, it's not all that hard to make an AI that cheats (e.g. knowing all the PCs' resistances and weaknesses in advance, and choosing attacks accordingly). One could always have an AI that cheats more at higher difficulties.

Be careful saying that... How about my melee squad leader?

With enough points in Endurance and Blessing Magic to improve survivability, a melee Shaper might actually work. I'm not sure if it'd actually be better than a Guardian doing the same thing (and let's face it, a melee squad leader is a suboptimal strategy in the first place), but it'd be interesting to find out.

If getting beaten to the punch in combat is causing problems for you, what you want is to invest in more Quick Action and Dexterity -- at least, if you're a Guardian or Agent. If you're a Shaper, what you want is to hide far behind your creations at all times.

Until you can get your initiative-boosting stats up to respectable levels, hasting yourself (through the spell or speed pods) also helps you act earlier in combat.

For the record, any game where the best option is to save and reload for 5 days using the same strategy until you win a battle is a very poorly-designed game.

get_flag(x,y) = get_flag(x,y) + z
//where z is the increase (or decrease) in rep due to the deed and x,y are the coordinates of the reputation SDF.

That's not how you modify a SDF. The correct syntax for what you want to do is:

inc_flag(x,y,z);

I am just a little confused about the syntax for the change_custom_abil_uses flag.. Why is it used in two circumstances (in beginstate and LOAD_SCEN state)?
It's called in the LOAD_SCEN_STATE to give you the ability in the first place. It's called when you use the ability in order to "recharge" your uses of it. (So every time you use it, you get an extra use of it, so you never run out.)

If I recall correctly, the hut's layout is inspired by the module, but various liberties have been taken with the plot.

The Fog is a much closer conversion of a D&D module to the medium of BoE, and I think there might have been one or two other scenarios based on D&D modules too.

There have also been scenarios based on movies. For some reason, most of these were based on neo-noir films that had Charlotte Rampling in them; Johnny Favourite is based loosely on the film Angel Heart, and my own scenario Roots is based very loosely on the film D.O.A. (and, more broadly, inspired by the film noir genre in general).

The only things in SW's games that are not made by Jeff, Mariann and/or Linda are the graphical art, which is mostly done by a single freelance artist (with another who has made occasional but notable contributions), and the sound, which is licensed from online sound resources.
