quote:There are no standard English haiku variations, because haiku is not an English poetic form. Attempting to directly transpose the form of haiku into English is just as absurd as trying to transpose iambic pentameter into Japanese would be; the concept of an iamb is meaningless in a pitch-accented language. quote:Well, the Shapers could of course stop conducting research entirely, and stick with the creations and spells they've got. But is this a realistic alternative? We've seen that the technological advantage the Rebels possess has been enough to make them a serious threat to an empire spanning two continents; it seems that the nature of power in the world of Geneforge guarantees that any faction which does not continually strive to acquire new knowledge will render itself irrelevant in the long run. And if it's true that the kind of power Shaping allows cannot in principle be kept under control, surely the sensible thing to do is to throw one's lot in with whichever side promises to hold back the chaos for longest. What's scary is that the Shaper/Rebel conflict isn't even close to a worst-case scenario yet; a degree of order is still maintained, and Shaping technologies are still in the hands of relatively few people. Imagining what a real proliferation of uncontrolled power would look like makes it very clear why moderate factions such as the Awakened did not and could not survive. Concerns like servile rights simply become irrelevant when everyone with any power is trying to crush everyone else to prevent them from doing the same. Treading water to stay afloat does you no good when you're swimming with sharks. Not all towns have jobs that appear only after other jobs are completed, and those that do don't have many. There are one or two in some towns, and none in others. The most notable is a series of three jobs in Fort Remote to find alchemical ingredients, which have to be completed in order, with increasing rewards for each. Everyone's gay for Thuryl. It's a scientifically established fact. You wouldn't argue with science, would you? Having said that, I'm really much more interested in praise and adulation from women, preferably living in or near Melbourne, Australia. Being admired from afar is only fun until you come to expect it. [ Tuesday, July 04, 2006 04:08: Message edited by: Thuryl ] -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Ever noticed the little book icon with the word "Record" under it in the bottom left hand corner of every dialogue box in a special encounter or when you're talking to someone? Click on that, and the contents of the dialogue box you're currently looking at go in your journal. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! The job boards don't have infinite randomly-generated jobs like in A3, though, which might be what he meant. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Email Jeff about it. You haven't by any chance been running Windows on your Intel Mac, have you? Windows eats resource forks, and Jeff still uses resource forks for things like custom graphics because he's a freaking dinosaur. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! So I finally got around to uploading new photos of myself. The picture quality's not great since I'm using a low-end camera phone and I think the background lighting is a little too bright, but I've been messing around with the phone all day just to get it to work properly and I'm not prepared to spend any more time on it right now. Here goes. Thuryl as you know and love him, only a little older (20 years old as of Saturday): Thuryl engaged in contemplation: Thuryl in full ceremonial regalia: Post photos of yourself if you've got 'em. The fact that you can get north of Fort Emerald without permission from Houghton is the bug. There used to be two ways to do it: by casting Dispel Barrier on the barriers in Fort Emerald, and by the gate in the bandit outpost north of Fort Saffron. Both have been fixed in the most recent version, but if you've already triggered the bug by taking the crystal box then there's nothing you can do about it. You'll just have to finish the game with Almaria still hostile. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Well, yes. That's why it costs a comically huge amount of energy. It's not as if you can go around blasting things with Auras of Flames all day long. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Have you checked these graphics to make sure there's no white in them? BoA interprets white as a transparent colour, and some of those highlights look pretty white. Why on earth are you letting them attack twice? If you're not killing most of your enemies within one round of seeing them, chances are that either your party or your tactics could use some improvement. In the early game, your durability will be low: Endurance doesn't have much effect until higher levels, and you don't yet have access to good armour. So you should focus on developing an overwhelming offence, to make sure nothing lives long enough to kill you. Run around hasted in combat mode all the time if you have to; a hasted party with a decent balance of offensive abilities (including melee, archery and spells) can and should take out any wandering monsters with little difficulty. Eh, it's not enough of a surprise to be worth playing through the rest of a game you don't like just to see it. It's basically just a really big Drakon. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |
