You're allowed to start new topics, you know.

Anyway, avoid Lyfan; if you'd read the readme, you'd know that you're not supposed to go anywhere near him. You're supposed to be exploring the east side of that area.

There are more than 2 posts in this forum. Posts older than 2 days are just hidden under the default settings. You can show them using the drop-down menu in the top right hand corner. Please don't post in topics more than a week old, though.

Nice work, anyway.

Jeff's rep and the Perils of Creating a Scenario Editor in General

Trying, perhaps. But if that's what he's trying to do, he's wrong. Bad designers will design badly no matter how much you restrict them, and good designers will take advantage of the features they're given and use them responsibly.

For example: having an official site where you host scenarios adds a lot of headaches becuase you have to constantly update other people's scenarios. It would probably be easier to have a scenario repository on a fan site and thus not have the community get mad at you if you fall behind in maintaining the scenario listings.
Such a fan-made BoE scenario repository already exists; it's called Alexandria. We're seriously thinking about getting Jeff to take down his poorly-maintained scenario tables and replace them with a link to Alexandria.

I think Jeff makes great games. But it gets very difficult when he creates a tool for developers and then finds himself stuck when the community's scenarios evolve beyond his original games, or go in different directions, and then they expect him to support the new features they have created in their scenarios.
I don't need the scenario editor to do anything I can imagine, but I'd at least like it to work as advertised. It doesn't.

quote:
Or what happens when you create a scenario editor and the free scenarios created by community members are considered better than your own games? From a business perspective you've just shot yourself in the foot by giving the competition a great scenario editor they can use to make an even better product.
If I were a more cynical man than I am, I'd think we might be seeing here the real reason why Jeff has crippled BoE and BoA.

Play Emerald Mountain, or his more recent BoE scenarios (especially Bandits 2 or Nebulous Times Hence). And, uh, you should just ignore the philosophy in his scenarios. They work better that way.

Anyway, he's not saying you can't make a good scenario. He's saying that if you say you're going to make a scenario, and you've never made a scenario before, you probably won't finish it. Which is certainly true.

Yeah, something like this was worked out for custom sound effects too. Unfortunately, we never determined if/how it could be done on Windows.

I get around it by fighting with my fists. They still do enough damage to kill anything in 1 or 2 hits.

Basically, the only solution is to use less powerful weapons. 1-10+1-10/level will still do several thousand points of damage, but shouldn't risk hitting the cap.

Also, I personally would give the party no-ammo missile weapons rather than crossbows. They don't really need the extra levels of damage from the ammo, and running out of God Bolts is at least a theoretical possibility. :P

I've actually had some problems with HLPM god-parties using god-weapons. Sometimes their attacks do no damage at all, especially when they inflict Lethal Blows. I think this is because the damage exceeds 32767 and wraps around to negatives.

Avernum 4 in General

It seems like a very odd decision to make Avernum 4 after Blades of Avernum has already been released. By the time it's finished, there'll be a good couple of years' worth of BoA scenarios out, many of which are likely to conflict with whatever material Jeff adds to the canon in A4.

If there is, it's not 255. I have HLPM'd PCs at level 257.

Basically, your problem arises from the fact that BoA makes walls "transparent" so you can see where you are when you're behind them. That's not a bug, it's a feature.

I'm pretty sure the effect is to penalise all your stats; your spells also get fewer targets when you're cursed.

Australia has mandatory voting; the fine for failing to vote is only $20, but it's still enough to make 98% of the population vote. It doesn't seem to make politics in general much better, though.

It doesn't exactly give you a different ending, but it adds a little extra text. Note that it's been reported that siding with Stalker and then killing him may cause a slight bug, as Jaen shows up to reward you afterwards (even though you killed him).

Uh, Emerald Mountain is meant for a level 15 party. It's no wonder you're not having trouble with a level 30 party. :P

Also, "mobs"? BoA is not a freaking MUD.

You need to put a door script on the space that's going to contain the door.
