Well, in any case, it'll take a bit of testing to see exactly what's been fixed. Hopefully it's everything (well, everything that's actually a bug). -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I'm aware of this. m appears to be aware of this too; he was asking if you could get stem cells from fetuses that are similar to embryonic stem cells in potential. I think the answer's no, and that fetal cells would be much more similar to adult cells in terms of differentiation, but as far as I can see the site doesn't actually address that issue in particular. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Aceron implied that Kaimorad was genuinely a hacked version of BoE; whether it was still capable of playing normal BoE scenarios I don't know. He did post a guide on h*x-*d*t*ng BoE savefiles, and once claimed that he could insert spells into BoE with pretty much any effect he liked for purposes of cheating through a scenario, so he'd obviously made some progress finding his way around BoE's viscera. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! There are earrings all over the place, but there's no apparent use for them. None seem to be the pair Pearlblossom lost. The item you put on the junk altar is the spiral horn carving. You get a reward for it, but I forget what. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Even fairly early on in fetal development, most cells are already differentiating or even fully differentiated. I don't think stem cells from aborted fetuses would be as useful. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Nope. Sorry. In any case, the only oddity I've noticed running BoE in OS X is that animated terrain doesn't animate properly. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Isn't there a dismembered reptilian limb graphic in Geneforge? You could take that, remove the spiny bits and color-shift it so it's pink or brown instead of green. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Not sure about that, Drakey. We're still at the stage of basic research at this point, so I agree that we need embryonic stem cells to work with. But immune reaction against implanted embryonic stem cells isn't a trivial problem; I suspect that adult stem cells are going to end up seeing more therapeutic use. The technical problems of dedifferentiating and redifferentiating adult stem cells are admittedly formidable, but not insurmountable. Many of them will have to be solved to use embryonic stem cells anyway. I've heard that cord blood stem cells also show promise as an alternative to embryonic stem cells, although I don't know the details. As I tried to say, I'm not in favour of coercive one-child laws in developed countries because people in those countries are already having fewer children. I'm not in favour of coercive one-child policies in the very poorest countries of the world either, because they'd be disastrous. The reason the population of developed countries with low birth rates isn't actually decreasing yet isn't entirely immigration; it's also the fact that the baby boomers haven't started dying off yet. Once they do, we can expect to see a drop in the population of many developed countries, particularly in Europe. The thing about birth control is that even when it's available, it's frequently not used. Of 98 married, HIV-positive men supplied with free condoms in one Ugandan study, none of them reported having used any of them. Why not? Because they had to have children. People living in absolute poverty, where it takes all the work they can do just to stay alive, have children because they're going to need children to support them when they're older. Mandatory education is problematic for similar reasons; parents don't want those children taken away when they could be working on the family farm. It's also hard to educate everyone when there aren't enough schools and teachers to go around. Enormous work needs to be put into the infrastructure of many poor countries before the average person living in one can reasonably hope to escape from poverty. Telling someone in such a situation that they have a right to a better standard of living seems like a bad joke. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted!
