After reading some old msn conversations from when i was in my ignorant 13 year old faze i came up with this theory about people who go through this 'stupid' stage. They just don't know what they're saying. Reading back at a few of the things i'd said long ago i realised, from my prespective now how stupid some things sound.

Many people i know say Jessica Simpson is stupid only because that's how she's lived her whole life, and that's the only way of acting she's comfortable with. But i think some people just can't help being stupid. They honestly have no idea what they're saying sounds like. Only some people grow out of it, and others don't. It's just this thought that's made me understand people going through the 'stupid' faze better. Any thoughts?

I think you've just provided us with convincing evidence for your own contention.

Bah. All people are stupid including myself. But it fades in and out. For example, there are many extremely competent professionals in the computer field, who can create programs which the world relies on, yet they can all have trouble from tying their own shoes, to being unable to use a coffee machine. It's all stupidity to a point.

Ladies and gentlemen, what our very own "secret bionic experiment by the Australian government" seems to miss, is that each of us are only as smart as we are and we should not look down on others, based on intelligence, but instead, attempt to enrich those who lack.

I agree. I also would like to add that, although some of us may be smarter than others, at some point we all are ignorant. The smartest person in the world does not know everything, and the stupidest person in the world knows something.

I think "especially myself" would have been more accurate.

I will choose to emulate the wisest person in the world, who knows that he knows nothing. :)

I think it's more to do with the history thing. Looking back on things you wrote or said also causes you to look back on how your mind worked at an earlier stage. For some reason, that always seems very stupid to you. I know how bad it is especially when keeping old writings. Anything I typed on my PC for over a year is archived in a keylogger, so when I want to have some fun I read through the stuff from 2003.

It's so bad that I shudder to think how dumb it looked years before.

And the worst thing is, you leave these traces for others to see. Search your publically displayed name in google (or any names you may have had here). Find an old SW post from 2003 or 2002. It's been deleted here? No problem, Google has it cached. And will store your stupidity for eternity. :P

Which then in turn makes me the wisest person alive for knowing that knowing you know nothing doesn't make you wise.

Ah, but knowing you know nothing and being willing to admit as much indicates humility and an open mind willing to question anything and everything, both of which I reckon are characteristic of wise people.

Wisdom?
there are so many definitions of wisdom though. There is the biblical prudence, streetwise, and a lot of other catagorical "wises" that can be had.
But looking back on writings, or even remembering conversations can make me hang my head in shame. The funny thing is that i bet in five years I will look at what I wrote now in the exact same light. :)

I agree. You will learn far more if you are humble and willing to learn than if you are arrogant and assume you already know everything.

...or assuming you already know everything you need to know and choose to remain willfully ignorant on most things because someone/some book says they're "bad." :D

I did not bother reading this entire thread. However I agree that all people are stupid... That having been said, some people are stupider then others.
Example:
People who have nothing better to do then come up with theories on stupid people...

Wisdom is merely raw knowledge. Intelligence is what helps you apply that in a useful manner. One without the other is pointless. And when that happens, it produces stupidity.

It is good to keep an open mind, but assumptions must be made, otherwise you won't get anything done.

This theory is incorrect, and was clearly invented by someone who was, themselves, stupid. The old chestnut about Einstein failing math was, similarly, made up in order to make mediocre people feel better about themselves.

There are smart people and there are stupid people. Yes, there are different kinds of 'wisdom', but just because you're attractive enough to get someone into bed with you or you've had the Bible beaten into your head from an early age doesn't mean you're your own special kind of genius. Well-trained or specifically qualified, perhaps, but...

Oh I like. I like alot. Slighting without having to openly say it. Slightly cowardly, but effective nonetheless.

The point was that we are all stupid sometimes. Some more than others. Specialisation to a point. For example (because I know you love them so) George Bush is an idiot. It is a widely aknowledged fact. He lacks basic vocabulary skills, is grossly misinformed about facts and has an IQ of a chimpanzee. Stephen Hawkings is a genius. His theories in Quantum Mechanics and Astronomy have greatly increased our understanding in the world and he possesses an IQ of over 200.

But occasionally, George Bush does some very smart things. And Stephen Hawkings does some very stupid things. But they're both socially defunct, so I suppose it matters not.

People are only as stupid as they think they are. Other people are only as stupid as you think they are. Therefore, I am not stupid. But I am stupid, according to you. Ironic, isn't it?

Sometimes I don't think before I say things and I say dumb things. It's called a lack of common sense.

Common sense is overrated.

You see, the problem with any of you criticizing Thuryl is that he is smarter than any of you. All of you, in fact. Thuryl is significantly smarter than everyone posting in this thread (except himself, of course) combined.
