quote:Actually, it's cones, not rods, that detect colour (rods just detect light in general; they're mainly important for night vision, because they're more sensitive than cones). Also, having more types of cone doesn't necessarily mean you can see a broader range of colours, but it does mean you can make finer distinctions between shades of the colours you can see. (Incidentally, the mantis shrimp has no fewer than twelve different types of cone, and can probably distinguish about 10 times as many shades of colour as humans, including colours in the ultraviolet range.) quote:It makes perfect sense if one sees the Bible as a historical document like any other, shaped by a large number of people with varying influence and intentions over a long period of time. Remember, the Gospels weren't actually put into writing by the disciples to which they're attributed; they're basically a series of traditions which were codified in written form only centuries later. Most myths are known to contain a mixture of historically verifiable aspects and utterly fantastic aspects; why should yours be any different? -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Is there any it_icon_adjust value that will turn a brown object (such as a rope or crossbow) grey? I tried tinting to a neutral shade but it didn't seem to do much. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

TM was having a little fun with you, I'm afraid (and making a reference to a BoE scenario). You'd do well to ignore him. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

quote:I used a level-30 HLPM party for Bahssikava and didn't even find most of it that difficult. quote:I'll grant that if one looks at, say, DwtD for comparison, the spell balance is pretty close to what it should be (except for the level-10 Create Illusions, which is a crime against God and man). As for item balance, it may be mostly okay (at least as far as the purchaseable items go), but then you get those artifacts which throw the whole thing off. quote:Okay, considering how high-level a Bahss party is likely to end up, that much I'm willing to agree with. (Treasure balance was significantly improved since the first beta, though. It's still on the low side in terms of items that are actually useful, but not too bad.) quote:On the other hand, Bahss's Robes of the Magi are a lot closer to the right balance than Canopy's zero-encumbrance Mithril Plate. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! quote:I suspect that if you don't build up enough priest levels for Divine Restoration, you'll eventually come to regret it. Healing is fine when you have one or two fighters and multiple priests to keep them healed, but when you only have one character acting every round you want to heal as quickly as possible. quote:See, this is bad etiquette because of what it does to designers. It basically makes it impossible to produce useful level recommendations when treasure balance varies so broadly between different scenarios for the same level, so there's no way to know if a level-40 party will come in with steel weapons (HLPM) or ludicrous ones (Canopy). Anyway, I just got through replaying Canopy. It's not as good as I remembered (although some of the bad parts aren't as bad as I remembered either). I'll leave my CSR rating as it stands out of courtesy (and in acknowledgement of the scenario's likely historical value). No other horrendous combat loopholes, although Unumstosslich and Shroud's third form are remarkably vulnerable to Shinibiimu and Shinigami respectively. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! More specifically, a party that's simply had its spells removed is a hell of a lot more gimped than one that's had its spells replaced with weapon skills. :P -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I'm replaying Canopy with a slightly unusual level-30 party (with heavy disadvantages, not that it helps since most of the monsters in Canopy are so low-level that I don't get much experience from them anyway), and getting by fairly well. So far, I've successfully mystified the AI of two bosses so that I was able to kill them off at a leisurely pace without even getting attacked. Man, I shoulda caught that sort of thing in beta. :P -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I find that looking at a representative sample of Picasso's works throughout his career in chronological order in one sitting is very instructive. Most less ordered art makes more sense when you see where it came from. As for poetry, I'm not really qualified to comment, because I can't write it and don't like to read it. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Ammunitionless missile weapons really are great. Since I don't like blatantly abusing overpowered weapons, I use slings, which only do around 100-150 damage even at high levels. They still rock. (Slings. Rock. Oh God, I slay me like David slew Goliath.) [ Thursday, April 14, 2005 06:55: Message edited by: Thuryl ] -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Are you trying to divert the beams that are to the north of the machine? That won't work. The beams you want to direct into the machine are a considerable distance to the south, past the crumbling wall s.t mentioned. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure!
