Describe people you know, each in one paragraph or less. The people you describe can be friends, family, coworkers or anyone else, as long as you have some personal association with them. It's not necessary for you to explain how exactly you are associated with them. There's a point to this exercise, which will be revealed in due course. That's not an Easter egg. That's a sandwich. If you can't tell the two apart, your kids must get very confused when you stage Easter egg hunts for them. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

The Nethergate easter egg was only revealed by Jeff very recently. Apparently, you have to go to two locations on opposite corners of the map without quitting the game in between, and afterwards the quotes at the start of each chapter are replaced with silly ones. Nobody's found it yet, as far as I know. Typing &, *, ( or ) (Shift-7, 8, 9 or 0) also produces hidden messages in many Spiderweb games, including Nethergate. Hmm. Well, based on what you've said so far, I'd seriously consider shelling out 10 clams for that update. ... and I just realised I made a completely unintentional and fairly awful pun in that sentence. I mean, I don't even have to try any more. It's like I've attained a state of pun satori. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! You don't actually need Mindduel to kill Garzahd; you can beat him to death if you're patient enough. (Although you'll probably need a way to cover him in antimagic in order to stop him healing himself.) -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Really, very little about scenario design is objectively hard in the sense that you can try as hard as possible to do it and still fail. Therefore it's motivating yourself to try that's the hard part. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

A warning about alchemy: save up all the ingredients you find unless you really, really need potions. You can find someone near the end of the game who will make Knowledge Brews for you, and he needs one of each ingredient for every potion he makes. In particular, be very careful about how you use Energetic Herbs and Mandrake, since those are the rarest. (Don't be too stingy, though. Some people will make very powerful equipment for you if you give them mandrake, and most of the time you'd much rather have the equipment than one or two extra Knowledge Brews.) -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! It's bad enough that I left and didn't manage to stay gone. An "I'm back" topic would just be embarrassing. Maybe I should just try to get myself banned. Yeah, so it turns out that I suck at the whole self-control thing. As I currently have more free time than I expected to have, it's not a huge problem at the moment. Don't expect me to be as consistently active as I used to be, though. I'm glad I resigned as mod, though. My commitment to the forums was starting to feel too much like a burdensome obligation. Plus, you can only stare at Sun Myung Moon for so long before your retinas burn out. And if you're using the ISO 4217 international currency codes, you can put them either before or after the amount. So 100 AUD and AUD 100 both mean 100 Australian dollars. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

If you find that the cartoons you watch are foamy, consider switching to an anti-foaming emulsifier. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

No, Demonslayer isn't there, but as part of the reward for killing the demon you're given instructions on how to find Demonslayer. (Gee, wouldn't it have been useful to have Demonslayer before going off to slay the demon? ) -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Why do you even want Exile 4? A4 was only worth playing for the new engine; converting A4's plot (such as it is) to the Exile engine would be pointless. If you want a huge game set in the Exile/Avernum continuity with Exile's engine, play Stareye's BoE scenarios, especially "At the Gallows" and "Spears". quote:Probably lost in one of the purges. Not all the stuff from PPP2 is archived online yet. Oh, and the reason DaC was so slow in places is that the monsters' AI was set to follow the party from anywhere in town. Turns out that BoA really doesn't like having to pathfind a couple of dozen monsters across town every turn. Actually, Mariann once posted asking after the location of Death at Chapman's. That would have been well over a year ago, though. I assume she was unable to contact the scenario's author to get permission to host it. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Also, if you're going along the western side of the field of pylons, be sure to look out for a cache in the northwest corner containing a very nice item. You'll need 23 Nature Lore to get it open, though. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

quote:Well, so much for leaving. This thread has tempted me back. If an artifact has been recently made, presumably the techniques used to make it are still known -- which means somebody can just go and make more of them provided they have the right resources. On the other hand, if an artifact was made by an ancient civilisation whose knowledge has long since been lost, then the only powerful artifacts you'll ever have are the ones that currently exist. If an item was made by people who are still alive and could make another one, then that takes away from its uniqueness. Having powerful artifacts whose secrets aren't lost to the mists of time is also inconvenient plotwise -- there's not a whole lot of point going on a long and involved quest to find the legendary sword that can defeat the demon lord when it'd be easier to commission your local blacksmith to make another sword just like it. Likewise, destroying the Crown of Ultimate Evil doesn't solve anything if the next insane wizard to come along can make another. Of course, you can solve both of these problems without resorting to ancient artifacts by making the creation of awesomely powerful items possible but really, really difficult. For example, in a fantasy setting I'm working on for Pygmalion (Djur's RPG creation engine), a skilled mage can make run-of-the-mill magic items, but really powerful items have to get that way by picking up magical energy from being involved in great deeds. A sword that was used to slay a dragon might pick up a trace of the dragon's elemental powers; a spear that was stolen from a great hero's body by his assassin might grant its wielder powers of stealth and deception. This does mean that ancient artifacts tend to get even more powerful over time, but it also leaves open the possibility of a new item rising to power if it plays a central role in some major historical event.
