I hate merchants. Look, it's standard practice in every roleplaying game to ensure that players can only sell loot for a fraction of the value . . . but in BoA's "A Small Rebellion" scenario, I am really starting to dislike the discrepancy between what I can sell an item for and how much it costs to puchase an item. A lot of games will let you sell items for 1/2 price, but in Avernum, 1/3 is awesome unless you have the Barter special skill. But all across Morrow's Isle, I can only find merchants who buy for 1/5 price . . . or maybe 1/4, if I'm lucky. I feel ripped off! Cheated! Swindled! Ah, well. -------------------- Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home. No, Salmon, he's just trying to encourage someone in scripting. :D Let's put it this way, Scratch, the Merchants were designed to fit the area. Obviously, it's a poor island, so everyone is gonna try to rip you off as best they can, to make the best profits. It is quite possible to get more than half an item's worth from a merchant. You just have to have enough barter and a generous merchant. -------------------- The Silent Assassin firmly believes that marketing is the fourth greatest evil in the world today, Following Squirrels, Fanatics, and Ohio State Troopers. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? quote:You know, I may very well get around to making a scenario at some point. I actually have a lot of prior experience with writing dialogue, scripting, and just generally putting roleplaying games together -- I'm a professional writer, I've worked on several fan-made Fallout 2 mod projects (among other, similar endeavors), and I gamemaster tabletop roleplaying games, which means I'm very familiar with the concept of game balance. Creating interesting characters and entertaining dialogue is a specialty of mine. We'll just have to wait and see what happens . . . And that is what I like about Avernum. Instead that everybody will be generous and give the same amount of money as everybody else, it all actuall fits to the surroundings, as lenar already stated. if you want to sell your items, wait till the scenario has been finished and choose a scenario in which it seems like you will be placed at a rich province. -------------------- Play and rate my scenarios: Where the rivers meet View my upcoming scenario: The Nephil Search: Escape. By Thuryl (welcome back!): quote:Simple. Bind a SDF to the amount of barter skill. Then choose the shop's exchange rate based on the SDF. One might then create a special ability to train in special skills and suck skill points in exchange for increasing that SDF. It's not that hard, but no one has done it yet, as far as I know. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. When I first read this topic, I thought you'd be trying to kill every single merchant in every BoA scenario. Possibly every friendly townsperson. Seems like you hit an infinite loop. nothing happens. It doesn't even make the scenario unwinnable.
