quote:Well, that depends on why you're participating in this debate at all. Is it because you want to convince somebody of something? If so, give up now. Is it because you want to impress us with your intellectual abilities? If so, that'll require being able to come up with your own arguments. Is it because you want to practice your debating skills and hone your reasoning? If so, you'll achieve that better by learning to develop your own arguments too. Is it simply because you have an opinion on the issue and think it's vitally important that we all hear it? If so, get a blog. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Why are you quoting that source? Is it because you think people are more likely to agree with something if Douglas Adams said it than if you said it? If so, that's an argument from authority, which is a logical fallacy. In philosophy, if your arguments are good they'll stand on their own. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

If Douglas Adams already said it, why are you bothering to say it again? We want original and interesting ideas here, folks. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

quote:Well, if the problem isn't with the definition of "God" (which, as you point out, it isn't), it's with the definition of "great" (or "perfect", or any of a number of other words I've seen substituted into the argument). The idea that it's possible to unambiguously define perfection, and that that definition necessarily includes the fact that a perfect being is more perfect if it exists than if it doesn't, is an attractive one, but considering how much trouble philosophers have adequately defining even words that don't have so much ideological baggage, we can't safely take it as axiomatic. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! quote:The important question isn't really whether he does actively control everything in the world, but whether he can. An omnipotent and omniscient being choosing to intervene in a given situation is indistinguishable from an O&O being choosing not to intervene; either way, the being is knowingly choosing to allow a particular result to come about. (I should add that the view that God's will actively sustains the existence of the universe is well within the bounds of "mainstream Christian thinking", so even if you don't buy the argument that knowingly failing to intervene in a situation that you know will lead to a particular result is equivalent to actively bringing about that result, God is still making an active decision to allow events in the world to happen in a certain way simply by choosing to allow the world to continue to exist.) -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! I don't play the Avernum trilogy much, but I always put two disadvantages on my BoA characters, and it's generally worked well for me. Characters with disadvantages tend to be noticeably weaker at low levels, but since disadvantages don't get worse with level, the extra levels you'll gain balance this out soon enough. (Some disadvantages are too serious to be worth considering, though. I'd never take Sluggish.) -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! quote:Don't worry about it. It really isn't a problem. You only ever need to get your mage's Tool Use up to 16, which is very manageable. If you try to keep both your Mage Spells and Tool Use high early on, you'll probably have to hold off on Spellcraft for a while, but that's not such a bad idea anyway since you can buy training for it in Cotra. Another problem is that a lot of enemies have Parry, and even when Parry doesn't completely negate a melee attack, it seriously reduces the damage. Since Parry doesn't reduce the damage from missile attacks, missiles will seem to do more damage by comparison. There are a couple of debugging commands in some games that can still be activated by typing capital letters, but that's not the full-fledged debug mode. Are you sure you were ever actually in debug mode in the first place? [ Monday, April 17, 2006 15:06: Message edited by: Thuryl ] -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure!
