The engine you prefer is the engine you start out with. There are diehard Exile fans out there, even though the Nethergate engine used in A1-3 is superior, with better graphics. If you're used to the BoA interface, A4 will seem annoying, and vice versa. Besides, I think JV mentioned that he wouldn't be returning to the old engine.

Mayor Kramer looked around quizzically as he left his offices. That's funny, no one's about. He began heading to the only inn in Angel's Rest, preparing himself for his customary three drinks. When he entered, he stopped dead. He had found where all the people had gathered.

"... have always been lying to you, always been misleading you," the nondescript man at the front of the inn was telling his audience. "The Empire had always held your fate in its hands, yet it never defended you! Where was the Empire Army when your lands were being ravaged by the Troglodytes. Had the senseless restriction on defending yourself, on using magic, been lifted, you could have fought back! Now, they are trying to bring back the old days. Will we return to those days of unenlightenment?"

Far too many of the citizens were nodding at the man's speech. Kramer began sweating.

***

Demetrius smiled as he looked at the report from his Agent at Angel's Rest. The battle was joined. Oh, there was no swords, or spells, but it was a war nonetheless. He would have preferred planting his ideas west, at Bolton, but he doubted Nyrulia and his Hunters would approve. How did the man gain so much support in so little time?

Demetrius tsked as he looked at the next report. His Agents up in the northern mountains had lost contact with another mercenary group. One group stopping the daily correspondence could be negligence, but two... There was someone who didn't like his involvement up north. He briefly considered hiring an adventurer group to investigate, but then decided not to. The only ones less reliable than mercenaries are adventurers. It would have to be Agents, someone who could watch silently without being caught, to be the eyes and ears up north.

Demetrius rubbed his forehead. He hated not knowing. Need a scry pool built, but need power crystals for distance... He made a mental note to get in contact with a faction in Avernum, and proceeded to the next report.

An Anama faction... Vahkohs is back (again)...

I've always been evil. It's just the Overlordship that's in dispute. As long as I don't break any of the three hundred-odd rules, I should progress even more...

More grammar errors from Kelandon. (Hides under his desk, awaiting the End Times).

"Redouble our efforts on the construction of defences around our research facility." Demetrius told the Council. "With these 'Looters' to the north, we cannot take any chances, even as far away as they are."

"And what of this new proclaimation?" Archmage Diego asked on his right as he shifted uncomfortably. Being an Avernite mage, with all the ideals entailed, he could only be meaning one.

"The Nephilim deportation?", Demetrius asked, curling his lip. "I'm afraid we have little choice. "With the Hunters growing in strength every day, doing otherwise would be fatal. Tell the Nephilim that they are welcome to flee north to Mernia, or through the mines of Golddale to Gidrik. If they linger, the Hunter attack is inevitable, and they will be wiped out anyway." In all likelihood, most of the Nephilim would join the massing army to the far north of the continent. Demetrius stroked his chin. Those who refused to leave would have to be dealt with.

"If that is all...", Demetrius said, then without waiting for an answer, left the Council Room. Annoying meetings, but necessary ones. He continued walking to his private chambers. Soon, he would send orders to his Agents to 'spread the word'. Then the true fun begins...

For my clarity, and everyone elses:
Drakefyre: Reactionists in Pralgad.
Zephyr Tempest: Nephils in Pralgad.
Dintiradan: Mageocracy in Valorim.
Redwallking: Racists in Valorim.
Slartucker: Goblins in Pralgad.
Serith: Self-defense in Avernum.
Tyranicus: Monarchists in Avernum.
Lt. Sullust: Mages in Avernum.
Ephesos: Druids of Krell. Surprise, surprise.
The Worst Man Ever: Dictatorship/Raiders in Abyss.
Spring: New Order in Pralgad.
Nikki xx: Reactionists in Upper Avernum.
Wonko The Sane: Item Raiders in Valorim.
Thralni: Nephils in Valorim.
Infernal666hate: Undead in Avernum.

Wow. Fifteen.

EDIT: A slith or Anama faction would be cool. Also, Serith's Vahnatai faction is still open.

Finally brushing off the aide that was pestering him, Demetrius strode alone down the corridors of Redmark College, carved snake-head staff in hand. The last few months had been hectic, but his mages had finally subdued the Isle Barons. Already, he had been told, surrender papers with the ink still wet on them were coming in from Gebra and Gorst. His lip twisted in scorn. The fools, that they would bring back the Days of Restriction. Too late for them to learn otherwise.

Now, the Council's rule was firmly consolidated. The fighting on the western borders had ended, the insurgents had retreated to Bolton, across the river. The mayors of Lennus and Squiggus had finally conceded to his demands. Golddale was slowly giving into his 'persuations'. Yes, the Council had things firmly in hand. With him as Magister, of course.

Faction Name: The Dominion of the Learned (DL)
Leader Name: Magister Demetrius
Location: South-east Valorim (the area surrounded by rivers, the mountains are controlled too).
Type of Government: Mageocracy
Religion: Atheistic
Description: Populated by the returning Avernites after the Time of Plagues (Avernum 3), the south-eastern region of Valorim had always chafed against the Empire's senseless restriction of magic and learning. Seizing the opportunity of its downfall, the Council of Archmagi at Redmark College hastened to make at least some of the world enlightened. Now, the Council is engaged in politics as well as teaching and research. All those who wished to return the world to its previous state in the area were swiftly dealt with by Agents of the Dominion.

EDIT: A few more things I wanted to point out tonight. The DL does not greatly rely on armies (it uses mercenaries if necessary). Instead, power is maintained by the Agents of the Dominion (parties composed mostly of mages; think Geneforge, though I've never played the games). Also, the DL is focused on magical research and creating artifacts.

--------------------
I'd post more, but I need to eat and homework calls. Basically, think of the University in Alpha Centauri, with a lot more Realpolitik.

I have a feeling this is going to be very fun. I also foresee much conflict between the DL and the RR, and any Anama factions, if any.

Also, Demetrius is featured in my scenario-in-the-works, and I plan to have Redmark College in Scenario #2. Other that the name and magical proficiency, no similarities exist.

EDIT: (Looks down): Hmmm... the Hunters practically on my doorstep...

I think there is a need for all prospective scenario designers to submit the name of their villain if they are going to use game material. For instance, it wouldn't do if three scenarios came out telling how Garzahd has returned.

Dibs on Adze!

I love the premise, though. One of the biggest things I missed in A2 was the Abyss. When is this set in terms of the series? Before A2 (and the Empire war), before or after A4?

EDIT: By Ephesos:

New foes are so much better...
Sometimes, the old foes are underdeveloped. C'mom, Adze's this big baddie midgame in A1, and he doesn't even get a line!

Shouldn't be too hard in BoA, though I haven't tried.

- Make several terrains with anvils, all shifted up in various amounts. Make them passable.

- When using a special ability, cutscene with the sequence of anvil terrains on an enemy's square, then do damage.

Or something to that effect, as I said, I don't know enough how to implement it. I am going to try do this for scenario #2, however.

The possibilities are endless now. As long as one mod remains alive, we can engage in guerrilla warfare, get banned just as we are about to die, and get un-banned in a safe place.

Dikiyoba, this abandoned mining town I've gone to: is it filled with supernatural fog, complete with wraiths that materialize out of it, hungry for your eternal soul? Everywhere I look, I see more and more parallels to my scenario.

A couple tips that came in handy for me:

- If you have a cave system (or another town that has gaps between the rooms), set up the layout using blackness (floor #255), then use bounding walls.

- For changing heights, set the blackness adjacent to the wall at the same height as the floor on the other side of the wall.

- Some wall configurations look better than others. The best way to find out is use Isaac's 3D editor.

Really, the best way to learn walls is look at other scenarios, or spend an hour playing around with the editor.

I remember the Xian Skull telling me to talk to somebody on Bigail (don't remember the name, but she was a member of the Church of the Divine Lucre). That lead you to the Fury Crossbow location. I think there was another useful hint as well, but it was still mostly a novelty item.

1: Unfortunately, the answer is "live with it". Really, the movement system is not that much different that the other Avernums. I recommend using the mouse in towns and outdoors, and using the keypad in dungeons.

2: No.

3: Left click, I believe. This is my biggest problem with the interface: you can't solely depend on the keyboard as you did in the other Avernums. To look at a terrain, or to fire on an enemy, you must use the mouse. If there's another way to do it, I don't know. Sometimes bumping into the terrain automatically searches it.

4: A4 doesn't have the automap/inventory switch. Just click on the inventory button, or type 'i'. 1-4 toggles characters.

5: If it's any consolation, JV has promised more character graphics in A5.
