Aran, no real battles have occurred as of yet in South Valorim (unless you want to include the Hunters vs. NP factions). The cities are very nice; no more jumping back and forth between two maps.

To clarify (or nitpick): the Dominion does not hold Bolton. It does hold Lennus and Squiggus (not really defended though), and holds the valley east of Golddale. In fact, you can put Redmark College in that valley (I've been thinking around the north-east corner).

Allim <==> Milla. Gotcha.

EDIT: Just a thought, maybe it might become necessary to date the battles, maybe by the page they occured in.

Allim, a trade agreement is fine, though a grain for fish agreement is probably more realistic. Later on, the Dominion will start producing magical items (potions, wands, etc.).

Anyway, I'm going to read your changes to IC, and make my IC reflect that. Thank goodness for that edit button...

EDIT: To prove my point, I made a typo and had to edit...

2Meeshka (hee-hee): Is this a Blades plot you're designing? Please don't. Limit yourself to one villain. Besides, I've got dibs on Adze. :P

Vicheron: I think JV purposely avoided detailing the priests and gods of Avernum. Other than the Anama and the Church of the Divine Lucre (which doesn't count), there are no major religeous organizations.

If someone really wants to do an A0, I'd recommend a scenario revolving around helping Micah establish Avernum, defending from sliths, etc.

Allim: Sorry, I posted IC before reading OOC. Sorry if I came off a little harsh.

Magic/Teleportation: Why should this not obey the rules normal RPs follow. A few rules of thumb:

- Make yourself work for your breakthroughs. I could be developing scrying, artifacts, portals... Instead, I'm making myself find crystals first.

- Announce your plans at least one post before you implement them. Don't make a portal and use it in the same post. The same goes for armies.

On behalf of GoldenKing:

Contact made. Forces in Upper. Can speak to leader. Am suspicious.

Tygra fed the slip of ciphered paper to the lamp flame. It had arrived by pigeon from Fort Emergence this morning. The note was just a heads-up, a more detailed courier report was probably on its way. He shook his head. The last thing he needed right now was enemies from below.

Last night, he had travelled to the shipyards of Krizsan. What he had found wasn't promising. Ships was an exaggeration; just a few fisherboats and merchant ships that were seized. His navy wouldn't be ready for a long, long time yet. Still, he had commanded the little ships he had to patrol the seas from Bojar's tower to Colchis. They wouldn't be able to stop any attack by a long shot, but he might have some warning. He needed his sailors in training to do something.

His efforts with troops were going better. A large number of able-bodied men had joined the camps outside of the major cities, and were under the training of the original Hunters. Living in the bread-basket of Valorim helped a lot as well; one of the main reasons men joined the army was the sure promise of food on the table in these turbulent times.

***

Bors leaned back on his chair in the room his delegation had been given. The meeting had gone better than he had feared, but worse than he had hoped. Alexandria and her magi were in the next room, ready to depart for the Portal Fortress the next day. He wished that the Hunter's only interest in the area was trade. There was no hope of allying with this Samuels, the man seemed to simmer on the inside with hostility. He had been surprised that the Hunters had been allowed a garrison in Fort Emergence. And suspicious, as well. Why would any man who hates the surface forces that much give them a foothold in the underworld? No matter. His men were returning to the fort the next day. Let Nyrulia ponder over the dealings. He was done with this mission; these caves made him uneasy. How can they live without the sun?

--------------------
I really had planned to have ship patrols around Krizsan. Please don't think that I'm doing this in reaction to your post, GoldenKing wanted me to train a navy, despite how long it would take.

EDIT: I'm assuming the ship you ran into was TM's, the Hunter's patrols don't reach out that far yet.

Demetrius paced his study, lost in indecision. The crystals from Ernest's hut had arrived at Golddale, but he still wasn't sure whether or not to send them through the mines to the College. He needed them for his defense plan if the Anama and Looters moved south, yet there were no reports of them moving south from Softport. If the negotiations with Upper Avernum went sour, he would have to send them to the College, to see if he could get to the lower caves with a portal. He frowned. What he needed was a Far Scry pool; more information was needed. Of course, that also required crystals... In the meantime, he would have to depend on couriers and pigeons.

The situation with the Isles was becoming interesting. Murmurs of autonomy were rising up. Let them have the useless Isles, thought Demetrius. He had accepted that a navy was out of the question. He had decided to move the bulk of his forces out of the Isles; if they really wanted them, he couldn't stop them. Besides, there were bigger fish in the ocean. A few discreet eyes and ears wouldn't hurt, nor would having a ready defense plan for Libras and Storm Port.

Demetrius paused again. More rival factions on his borders. By now the Dominion guards were fully established, and were defending Redmark College and its environs. The other cities under his control worried him. He doubted a spy could get within sight of the College, but one could easily slip in the outlying cities. Time to start using the schools in Libras and Storm Port, as well as those under construction in Squiggus and Lennus. When the citizens discovered how vital the inner strength of the Dominion was, they would serve to protect it from rot, from those who seemed suspicious.

He decided to keep the crystals where they were for the time being. No use acting without information.

--------------------
EDIT: The Isle situation had been solved; move along, there's nothing to see here.

The meeting with the representative from Gebra and Gorst had not gone well. Their once-proud navy had been decimated when the Dominion had taken over the isles. The task of rebuilding had begun, but it would be long before the new fleet became capable of more than just self-defense.

Demetrius tapped his lower lip in his personal study. Now, it is the calm before the storm. As much as he wanted to send forces into Karnold, he had to wait. No matter what else, he must not appear the aggressor in this conflict. The Looters would be a problem once they moved south, but he had figured out a way to deal with the Anama if they decided to intervene. One of the primary rules of warfare, after know yourself and know your enemy, was know the terrain. Another was divide and conquer. He smiled. Soon, the crystals would arrive at Golddale.

Demetrius returned to his notes. New schools were being instituted in Libras and Storm Port. Not only would the youth be taught the true path to knowledge, but he would find the best, the brightest. He needed more magi.

On behalf of GoldenKing:

Why so hostile? Some people's memories are far too long, though Bors. "Unfortunately, your isolation will lead to your downfall. There are other factions on the surface, raiders, war-mongering religions, and more. Do you think they will stop with the surface?" He gestured to his group. "We don't have enough men down here to conquer your underworld, even if we wanted to." He paused. "How bad is it, down in the pit? It may be, that in the future, you will need our aid..."

***

Tygra paused a moment over the letter he had just written, then pressed his seal into the wax. This one, and its other copies, would be sent to all the major cities on the south-west coast of Valorim. Soon, his training camps would be created, filled with citizens hoping to protect the glorious new empire of the Hunters. He rose, thinking. Earlier that morning he had sent a group of couriers to Fort Emergence. By now, his party should have made contact. Every few days, two couriers would depart from there bearing news, one to Krizan, and one to Redmark College.

A few things:

Clarification for the Roster: O'Leary is a feudal lord, with a small military (NPC). The main cities controlled by the Dominion are Golddale, Storm Port, and Libras. Gebra, Gorst, Squiggus, and Lennus are also under control, but much less defended.

Also, since the actual location of Redmark College seems to be unspecified, I'm placing it in a valley north-west of Storm Port (Valley of the Ursagi in A3).

Nikki, I'm sending you a PM regarding the Fort Emergence dialog. It will stretch realism if it drags on too long.

EDIT: GoldenKing's not going to be happy about the lambswool when he comes back. It is a good IC balance, though. But still, you're going to need a lot of it.

Slarty, my theory on the late colonization of Valorim is that the Empire never was united. It has gone under major revolutions periodically, each time with all histories erasing all mention of said rebellion.

And please, everyone stop stomping on GoldenKing. He's made mistakes, but remember that HE HAS STOPPED POSTING FOR A FEW DAYS. He has had enough advice on how to run his faction, so let's not overwhelm him when he gets back.

EDIT: GoldenKing's forces are in control of the cities on the south-west coast of Valorim. Anything else has but a token presence.

On behalf of GoldenKing:

Bors breathed a sigh of relief as the last of the bandits fell. It had gotten difficult for a moment, but then the majority of the bandits had broken off to the cave-side of the fort. So the Avernites still have a military presence, it seems, he though to himself as he walked down the fort with his men and the Dominion's. "Check the bandits, make sure that..." A ringing noise made him turn around. He had found the Avernites, and their stance was definitely hostile. The prepared speech he had made was useless now, he was sure they would have been grateful for the aid. Realizing the lead Avernite had spoken to him, he jerked out of his reverie. "Greetings, Captain William. I am Captain Bors, co-leader of this expedition on behalf of the Hunters." He gestured to Alexandria. "This is Battlemage Alexandria, co-leader of this expedition on behalf of the Dominion of the Learned. It is of interest of both our factions to come into contact with the forces of Avernum, for mutual protection and trade. Know that neither the Hunters nor the Dominion has designs on the ownership of Avernum, above or below." Alexandria made to move towards the captain, but Bors brushed her back. No doubt the fool woman wanted to talk to the Avernite about her precious crystals before he was sure the man wasn't hostile. He had asked before about why the wizards needed crystals, and had regretted it. After being told how 'induced refraction upon orthagonal axis caused the resonance to increase exponentially', he had tuned out. He gripped his sword tightly. This could turn out messy, and he doubted he had enough men in his meager expedition to fight these Avernites.

***

"But, my Lord, you ask the impossible! There is no way the shipwrights could possiblily construct a fleet of the size you..."

"It is of no consequence what is possible or not," Tygra interrupted. "What I want you to do is get those shipwrights to work harder, for the glory of the Hunters."

The man began to shake his head, but then Tygra's spell came into full effect. "It shall be as you say, my great Lord."

When the man had left, Tygra leaned back and sighed. A useful thing, that spell. It keep the people obeying, when they wouldn't otherwise. After the failed attempt to take the tome, he had placed it in a hidden safe. But that wasn't good enough. He would have a defense fleet constructed, no matter what excuses those below him made!

--------------------
Your turn again, Nikki.

I'm not sure how GoldenKing has his spell invoked, so I left it ambiguous.

I don't know if I like the date idea. It's going to lead to rules lawyering debating whether a certain action can take place in a certain amount of time.

Demetrius stroked the goatee he had begun to cultivate. At this point, it was beginning to be unnecessary to incite the people of Karnold further. Once the Anama's forces began to move south from Softport, the people would be begging for the Dominion to save them from the restrictive Anama. He decided to sent a few of the Agent he had employed to incite the crowds in Angel's Rest and Sharimik to the Dellston and Poulsbo area. He had decided that the Looters were not a land-holding faction, but only a large band of warriors. Demetrius pursed his lips in thought. He had no immediate plans for the Lorelei area, but it never hurt to prepare the area in advance.

He turned to the next issue at hand, the power crystals being brought up from the Fort Emergence area. With those, he could begin work on one of the major projects he was waiting to start. But there was always the imminent invasion from Bigail. If the Anama came in force, he would have to use the crystals for defense instead. He began writing a letter for Agent Celeste. She was to bring the wagon through Porter's Retreat to Golddale, and then through the mines to the College. Moving the wagon through the mines would be slow-going, but if the attack came early, it would ultimately save time.

--------------------
I had intended O'Leary to exist for flavour only. Feel free to use him, just don't make him more powerful than a player-controlled faction.

OOC: In response to TM's (Imban's) post:

Yes, I agree that GoldenKing went a little overboard with the 'secret forces'. In my post on his behalf, I said that he was going to start on the construction of a fleet. I'll try to work it into the next post how his efforts are spreading his forces too thin.

Also, the Dominion has not started the selling of magical weapons (yet). I have loaned him some mages, but he pulled the wand-cannons out of his hat.

A couple things on #5:

If you read carefully, it was my Agents playing both sides of the crowd. Also, it was in Sharimik (on the mainland), and in previous posts I had sent Agents into the area to talk about the Dominion of the Learned. (Admittedly, it was in Angel's Rest that I wrote about, but presumably word has spread). The whole 'peasanty' thing was just flavour, I made a mini-faction for Sharimik: a feudal state.

Anyway, I'll do an IC post either later on tonight or tomorrow morning for both factions.

EDIT: Aran's idea of a giant map is nice. It would be nice to know where Vantanas is in relation to Valorim if I (on GoldenKings behalf) have to defend the Hunters from the Guild and the Druids.

OOC: Good idea, Lt. Sullust. The problem is enforcing it. If some faction attacks me right after my post for the day, and that faction is in the habit of posting more that once a day, I will make sure I respond.

Also, I strongly recommend that any new people joining the RP base themselves in Aizo or Vantanas. I know the other areas have a better developed game canon, but Archmage Alex and Ephesos are going to get bored playing by themselves.

On behalf of GoldenKing:

Tygra smiled as his men reported to him. The south-west cities of Valorim were now firmly in his command. He told his men to double their efforts of fleet construction in Kriszan. The Anama seem more and more bent on war. Tygra smiled. Their war-mongering would give him justification to begin a campaign on the island. But they could still invade before I am fully ready. He told his men to begin sending patrols along the west coast of Valorim. Soon, I must see what I can do with Farport and Gidrik. He smiled again. A good day for the Hunters, with more and more territory to gain.

***

Bors perked up as his scout returned. "What's ahead?" he asked.

"Couldn't get a good look, but there's bandits holed up there. They've got archers at the very least. Also, the approach doesn't have enough cover to hide a fly. We're going to take a lot of hits going in."

"Don't worry about the archers, Hunter," Alexandria said as she strode up. "We'll get you through without a single hit."

"How?" Bors asked, raising an eyebrow.

Alexandria smiled. "Suffice to say that while an Agent relies on stealth, a Battlemage has different strengths."

***

The Battlemagi sprang around the corner, and hit the surprised archers with a massed blast of fire. "Now!" Alexandria shouted.

Bors shook his head and moved his men forward. He didn't see how this was going to work; any minute now the archers would rise up and begin to ... his skin tingled and the world slowed down. A haste spell. Excellent. The arrows streaming towards him were like lightly tossed sticks, now. His men dodged them easily, and joined battle with the stunned archers. They were going down easily enough, but there were shouts further down in the fort. Odd, it seems most of their defenses are on the cave-side.

--------------------

With a small smile of satisfaction, Celeste finished dismanteling the barrier rune. She entered the room, and sighed. Too much to hope that the portals would still be functioning after a few centuries. Most were completely inactive, with a few shooting off the occasional red spark. Time to investigate that locked door I came across before, she thought as she walked past Ernest's personal library, the book now thoroughly destroyed by rot. A few moments with her picks, augmented by a little spell, and she opened the door. And sighed again, this time in contentment. Six power crystals sat in the room, one broken, but the others undamaged.

A few hours later, she was riding south again, having destroyed all her tracks and other indications that someone had been present. A quick stop at the Inn of Blades, to send a courier to the College, and then she would return to the hut. With hired blades, if possible. She was going to guard her find like a mother hawk.

***

Lord O'Leary sneered, and the surf nearly ran away from him. Soon after the downfall of the Empire, he had seized the area surrounding Sharimik, and restored the old lines of power. A feudal state was the only way to keep order in this time of chaos. He and his guards proceeded to the town square. Apparently, the peasantry had decided to mass there again, and a little show of force would send them back scurrying to their holes. He entered the square, and looked at the man in priestly robes who was speaking to the crowd.

"We cannot allow the common citizen to have access to magic," the man was saying. "The Anama will protect you from dangerous knowledge."

"That is a lie!" someone exclaimed from the crowd. The rest of the surfs looked at him curiously. "Knowledge is never inherently dangerous. We have a right to wield knowledge." The crowd began to nod at the man's words.

"But the wizards will take control of you," the priest insisted. "They have no concern of your wellbeing, unlike the Anama, which will hold your fate in their hands."

"More lies!" someone from the crowd said. O'Leary thought it was the same man, though the voice had come from a different section of the rabble. "The Learned have no standing armies. The Learned have not tried to conquer us. Can the Anama say as much? Look at the smoke from Softport for your answer!"

Whatever the priest said was lost in the roar of the townspeople as they surged forward. O'Leary motioned for his guards to leave. He didn't have enough to quell a riot. As he looked down one of the alleyways, he stared. He saw the Anama priest, although he had discarded his robes, in conversation with another man. He couldn't be sure, but he thought it was the same man who was speaking against the Anama in the crowd. His chest went cold. Someone was stirring up the peasantry against these Anama. But why, oh why, did they have to choose his surfs as the rioters? All his hard work over the past few months would be for nothing. It just wasn't fair!

***

Demetrius smiled as he looked at the report from his two Agents in Sharimik. A few more incidents like this one, and the common citizen would welcome his Battlemagi with open arms as they went north.

--------------------
Wonko, the College doesn't control the area around Softport. As you see above, though, it is sending Agents to stir the region up a bit.

Excellent, Celeste thought to herself as she rode away eastward from the Hunters and Battlemagi. The whole trip she had been thinking of an excuse to leave the party, and the Hunters had given her one. The Magister already knows the alliance is all but set in stone. When she was out of view, she turned her horse northward. According to the maps, a pass lay near here, and she should be able to reach the remains of Ernest's hut, if it did exist.

***

Bors watched the woman on the horse leave eastward. Probably one of those 'Agents', he mused, but he had orders from his superiors that one of the magi had to return to the Dominion lands. He turned to the apparent leader of the Dominion magi. "Well, if you're ready, Hunter, we have a journey to make," the Battlemage who named herself Alexandria said in a monotone. "Remember, this is a simple scouting mission. We get in contact with the leaders of the Avernite factions, bring some crystals back, and leave. Don't go overboard with your genocides." Bors gritted his teeth. That was the third time that woman had said that. It was going to be a long journey...

***

Demetrius gazed at his reports. Magi repression on Bigail was reaching an unprecedented high. He had little doubt that the Anama would begin to move south soon. Time to start the next phase of his operations in the Sharimik area. A few words whispered in the right ears, and the citizens there would soon realize that only through free information, and not repression, would there be freedom.

--------------------
GoldenKing, if you want, I can take semi-control of your faction for a while. I won't do any more than defense and consolidating power, though.

Interesting, thought Demetrius as he read the tome, sitting in the Library of History. He had decided that Nyrulia must have had access to some sort of magical item, and so had his librarians search for information on politically active magi in Southern Valorim. So Bojar lead a group of fanatic bandits. So similar to the present condition. He had to think of some circumventive way to ask Nyrulia about it. Such power in the hands of my Agents...

Demetrius looked about the library. Out of the entire college, this room held the most dangerous contents. Pure, unadulterated, uncensored history. When he had first come to the position of College Magister, before it had become a political position, he had made great efforts to find out the true version of events. History is truly written by the victor. He supposed whoever emerged victorious from the current happenings would make efforts to erase all mention of the current times. And they say the Old Empire lasted five millenia. Ha!

He returned to his book. Fate had smiled on him this day. The book detailed the efforts of a group of Avernite forces during the Time of Plagues, and he had stumbled across an interesting discovery. The book mentioned in passing one Ernest, to the west of Fort Emergence. It referred to him as the 'Portal Mage'. It wouldn't hurt to send two or three Agents along with the Battlemagi to Fort Emergence.

Demetrius finally rose up. There was still much to do today. After witnessing the creation of the Dominion Guards for the College, he had to meet with the representatives from Gebra and Gorst, to begin the rebuilding of their once-proud navy. And then there was the creation of defenses of the mountain passes to the north...

Demetrius shook his head. The work never ended.

Slarty, the 'official alliances' refers to alliances so open that any faction can discover about them, so long as their eyes and ears are not blind and deaf.

This had been said before, but it bears repeating. GoldenKing, as much as I would like an all-powerful ally (or not...), please slow down. Taking unclaimed territory is fine, but now that all the borders in the south are defined, it would be nice to the other players to continue at the pace you are going.

EDIT: Goblins scrying on mages scrying. What if the mages scryed on the goblins scrying the mages scrying the...

There's either no one up there, or they're very good at hiding, though Demetrius as he puzzled over the Agent reports. He had sent a few Agents up near Lorelei, both magically and non-magically talented, and gotten nothing. No overt military presence, just rumours of rumours of armed bands. Demetrius hated relying on rumours, cold hard facts was the way to go. He made a mental note to make the college solely defended by the Dominion Guard. The mercenaries were too easy to infiltrate.

He sighed, and returned to his letter. A shot in the dark, but a necessary one. He had to get access to crystals from Avernum. The Hunters would probably be willing to accompany a group of Battlemagi and Agents to what was left of Fort Emergence, but after that... Still no news from the Pit. I'm walking in with my eyes closed.

Thinking about the Hunters brought him back to his earlier musings. How on earth did that man gain so many followers? It galled him not knowing. Perhaps the library might hold some answers...

GoldenKing, I think an official alliance is necessary now.

EDIT: I think that versions of the maps with borders on them will be nice. If Slarty or others can't find time to do this, I can.
