The mercenary leader leaned forward, full plate armour creaking. "Your proposition sounds interesting, friend. However, my men haven't finished spending the money from their last venture, so I'm afraid we'll stay put in Aminro." The cloaked man across the table placed a sack of coins on the table. The mercenary licked his lips as the man placed a second sack on the table, then laughed. "For a man who don't talk much, you sure are persuasive!"

Jakob smiled, his face hidded in the cowl of the cloak he had pilfered from an unsuspecting soldier. "The Anama is displeased with the recent turn of events. Order must be maintained. Those who think otherwise should be... disposed of."

***

Denise looked at the dead man, then back at the mirror. Not a perfect job, but unless anyone intimate with the man took a long, close look, they wouldn't be able to tell the difference. A knock came at the door, and she swore silently to herself. "In a moment," she said gruffly, barely remembering to disguise her voice. She dragged the dead man into the closet, then closed the door. She would dispose of him later. She then hurried to the door and opened it. "Jack," the young man outside excitedly said. "I just got the message: we're moving out."

Denise smiled, stroking her chin. The man outside would see a burly man stroking his beard. It was a habit this 'Jack' had been fond off; for the past few days she had been tailing him, memorizing his habits and personality. "I'll be a moment, then I'll meet with the rest of you."

***

Alexandria hummed quietly to herself as she waited to go through the portal. She had secured a source of crystals for the Dominion. Once she reached the surface, she would send a pigeon to the College. Hopefully, only one load would have to pass through Upper Avernum and Hunter lands. One more round of smiling and bowing to these Upper Avernum fools, and then she would be done with this annoying mission. The portal was now ready for her passage; her two companions had already gone through. She stepped through the portal.

And emerged into chaos. They were under attack. One mage was casting a spray of lighning bolts into an advancing group of Avernites, an arrow in his shoulder. The other was on the group, dead, amid a pile of frozen soldiers. She cursed, and throw a Fireblast into a large group of Worms trying to rush her. They tumbled to the ground, screaming as they burnt, and she turned around to nail another group, snarling. An arrow flew past her and hit the other mage, and she retaliated with bolt of lighning, destroying the outcropping where the sniper had hide. Oddly enough, no other bolts flew towards her. She continued spinning around, blowing away any who tried to advance on her. She was hopelessly outnumbered, but maybe if... Something hit her on the back of the head, and everything went black.

Demetrius looked up as the two Agents entered his temporary rooms in Golddale. He would return to the College soon, but first he had to oversee a few things, before the storm truly began.

He stode up, and walked over to the pair. Brother and sister, he was told, but their talents lay in wildly different areas. "Jakob, Denise, good to see you. I have tasks for both of you." He turned to the man. "Jakob, I want you to gather all the non-magical talented Agents in the North Karnold area. Tell them to contact as many mercenary groups as possible." He waggled a finger. "I don't want any mercenary guilds or the like; only small groups. Contact each separately: each group should think they were the only ones contacted." He turned to the other. "Denise, I want you to get in touch with all the magically talented Agents, especially those proficient in illusion. I wish to know more of what the enemy intends to do. You are to be my eyes and ears in North Karnold." He grinned. "And occasionally, my mouth."

After the two left, Demetrius returned to the reports. Apparently, the Anama would soon have Sharimik well in hand. Still, there was a chance that some groups within Sharimik chafed at Bigail rule. He leaned back, rubbing his hands together slowly. Soon, very soon. The last of the Battlemagi were trickling into Golddale. Soon, the task of 'liberating' North Karnold would begin.

--------------------
The weather doesn't have to be hurricane force. It's mainly intended as a blockade. If Bigail wants to get troops into Karnold, they'll have to land in Marish, causing fun supply train problems.

On behalf of GoldenKing:

The last of the longboats reach the ships, and after one last volley of cannons, the ships turn about and sail to the southwest. There is no cry or cheer from the defenders of Krizsan. Only silence, broken occasionally by the moans of the wounded. Then, amid the hazy smoke of the burning buildings, a flag is raised. In stark defiance of all the forces set against it, the red-gold eye of the Hunters flies over the city of Krizsan.

***

Corporal Nellson looked at the horsemen approaching from the south. They would reach his men in a few minutes, and more then doubled his group in numbers. He would have taken horses back in Krizsan, but the dying man who handed him the black chest had told him that the rough ride would set off the traps in the chest. "Find an area we can defend ourselves from," he told his men. He had no doubts about his fate, but he would die bravely, defending the greatest artifact the Hunters owned.

***

Tygra swept his arm in a broad circle, indicating the destroyed harbour district. Addressing the crowd of townspeople around him, he finally spoke. "Why?" he asked. "Why attack? They did not want our land. They did not want our riches." His voice rose in pitch. "No! They came in, unprovoked, wantonly causing destruction and killing at random!" A calculated pause, then he continued. "Citizens, you all see the danger. There are those out there who would try to reverse the progress of mankind. This was a direct assault on all the Hunters are trying to fight for!" Another pause, then he rose his voice even more. "Shall we stand by, and take no action? Shall we watch our fair cities be destroyed, our children killed, as these attackers tried to do with Krizsan? Shall we watch as the lands we have cleansed become soiled again with lesser men then ours? Or shall we take up arms, and bring the fight to them?" Many of the townspeople began yelling at this. Others maintained a grim, but determined, silence. "I swear to you, as leader of the Hunters, that I will never forget the Battle of Krizsan, and the brave sacrifice our troops have made. I pledge to you that the Hunters will work ceaselessly to defend you people from any other threats. And I make an oath that we will not rest until those who dared to attack us are defeated once and for all!"

A few more words, then Tygra stepped down from the overturned cart. Let the people have a day to stew over that. He would have men placed in the markets, the taverns, the streets to say much the same as he had. By tomorrow, the bannermen would be swamped by all those who wanted revenge against those who had ruined their lives. He walked back to the capitol, mind whirling. He would have to send scouts up north, and begin rebuilding defenses. A few ballistae and catapults could have changed the course of the battle significantly.

Yeah, the Hunters are primarily military, and after the seemingly wanton destruction of Krizsan, he'll be able to whip the peasants into a frenzy and get them to join the army. I told him much the same in an PM.

He's done a quick post. The real book is going to be destroyed now.

I'll try make a post where Nyrulia speaks to the masses. Hopefully, I'll be able to weave in a synopsis of the battle in the speech for those confused.

EDIT: The firing on the Looters really surprised me. Killing the people who hired you is quite a bad business practice. :P

Yes, the Krizsan battle had been difficult to follow, especially considering the way details retroactively change. I won't be able to do a summary; I'm going to be swamped with homework and exams in the next few weeks, and doing two factions is hard enough. Usually, the only time I spend on here is in a one hour slot of time at school.

TM, I now realize my abject stupidity in the barrel move. It was an act of desperation. GoldenKing's not going to be too pleased when he gets back.

Pardon my ignorance, but how can you use a homing pigeon with a fleet?

Demetrius and Tychius emerged from the carriage and looked around at the area. Mountains surrounded them on all sides, with a narrow path leading down from the cleft. To the south lay Golddale, and to the northwest he could make out the Bay of Bigail. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes. He and Tychius had slept most of the journey; they would need to be well-rested. Soon after he had received the first message regarding Krizsan, another had followed, in greater detail. Wand-wielding raiders. Demetrius smiled. Apparently the Looters had brought the majority of their forces by ship to Krizsan. Excellent.

A woman walked up to the carriage, with a small group of younger robed men and women behind her, and Demetrius nodded to her. "Good afternoon, Agent Celeste. Take Archmage Tychius and myself to where you have secured the crystals, if you please."

A short hike later, the group arrived on the ledge. Demetrius and Tychius didn't waste any time admiring the view. Instead, they sat on opposite sides of the center crystal. Demetrius closed his eyes. Once the flow was established, lesser magi could control the spell, but to initiate it required all of his and Tychius's strength. Connect the main with the four outlying crystals, so, then anchor with the mountain's ley line...

***

A little shaky from vertigo, Alexandria and her two companions stepped from the portal. She looked around briefly at the ruins of the once triumphant Tower, then turned to the force awaiting them. "I am Battlemage Alexandria of the Dominion of the Learned, here to speak with a representative of King Lartaynoir," she said proudly. Time to see how Lower Avernum stood with the Dominion.

***

Demetrius stumbled back to the rear of the ledge, exhausted, and heard Tychius do the same. It was done. He opened his eyes and looked around. Night blanketed the mountain range, but he saw the glow emanating from the five crystals. A much larger group of magi had arrived and now were taking shifts maintaining the spell. He motioned to Celeste. "I'm charging you to the defense of this place. Make it a deathtrap to any who try to get near it. Hopefully, you'll be able to keep off the merely curious with illusionary dead-ends, but I want a scry network set up." He looked out to the glittering Bay of Bigail. It would take a while for the effects to manifest - weather magic always took long - but soon the eastern side of the Bay would experience the worst waves it had seen in a decade. The calm had ended. The storm was about to arrive, and with it his Battlemagi. After weeks of rest, his 'troops' would move north.

Ideologies can change. I'm still waiting for the Druids to leap out of the shadows, laughing and saying, "I can't believe you fools fell for our act," and then take over the world. A seemingly good faction that actually is good is... different.

On behalf of GoldenKing:

This battle is going on far too long, Tygra thought to himself. He was sure the men bearing the chest would have been captured immediately, with the raiders leaving on their ships. Apparently he had underestimated the skill of his men. If they were still obeying his last command to him to flee to an 'armed group set up for this purpose.' If only it wasn't for those ships. Inspiration struck him, and he turned to an aide. "Send out men to find all the oil-dealers in the city. I want you to start dumping the casks into the ocean. When the time is right, light them." It was unfortunate, but necessary. But, with the decimation of his appropriated fleet, Krizsan wouldn't be depending on fishing anytime soon.

***

Sergeant McCallister paused behind a building with his men, looking out into the harbour. Those wand-wielding raiders had secured the open area, but hopefully not much longer. He looked back at his group, all good men from Silvar. "When the forces from Colchis attack on the other side," he said quietly, "we charge. Don't stop for anything, and move to close range as soon as possible." A few more minutes of quiet waiting, then a wordless roar reached their ears. "Now!" he cried, brandishing his sword. His men leapt from behind the shattered buildings of the harbour district. The raiders turned, firing off a few wand blasts before his men slammed into their front ranks. Quickly the fighting turned to close hand-to-hand, negating the use of the raiders' more destructive wands. Now lets see how willing these ships are to fire into their own men...

(Fights down the urge to create an alternate account and start a faction in retroactively unclaimed Aizo).

I think the Krizsan battle should be winding down soon. It's not like the Looters have an unlimited supply of magical items, and the Hunters tactics have been forcing the Looters to use up all their items.

Faction: The Dominion of the Learned; based in Redmark College (Southeast Valorim)

Ideology:
The main goal of the Dominion is to preserve the well-being of the learned class in the lastest incarnation of the Empire. In the past the magi and scholars were held accountable to the government, at most being a power behind the throne (as in the days of Garzhad). The Dominion will preserve the rights of the learned class, their rights to have an equal or greater say in the government of the Empire, at all costs. Right now the Dominion's plans for securing the executive power of magi for the new Empire to be have been delayed in defending itself against the Anama and the Looters, and lately, the Rakshasi.

Everyone who has a name:
Magister Demetrius: Leader of the Dominion, head of Redmark College.
Archmage Diego: Previous leader of the Battlemage force in North Karnold. He and a small group of Dominion Guards and Battlemagi escaped the massacre at Angel's Rest.
Agent Celeste: Previous commander of the defenses of the mountains north of Golddale, to protect the magi maintaining the weather spell. Is now returning to the College.
Battlemage Alexandria: Former representative of the Dominion on the Fort Emergence Expedition. Now captured by the Avernite Protection League.
Archmage Tychius: Used to maintain the weather spell in the mountains north of Golddale. Is now returning to the College.
Agent Jakob: In the past, he has hired small mercenary groups to do atrocities in the name of the Anama. Presumed dead after the massacre at Angel's Rest.
Agent Denise: Along with other Agents, infiltrating Looter and Anama ranks.
Archmage Cara: A member of the College Council.
Archmage Boris: A member of the College Council.
Archmage Eliza: A member of the College Council.
Captain Erhart: One of the few survivors of the massacre at Angel's Rest. He has returned to North Karnold with a force of Dominion Guards to find what remains of the Battlemage force.
Abram: A researcher at Redmark College, who has just stumbled on a way to create a Clockwork Resonator, a mechanism that creates an anti-magic field.
Lieutenant Neilson: Erhart's second-in-command.

Relations with other factions:
Hunters: A peace treaty existed. However, the Dominion reaction to the slaying of Tygra Nyrulia was apathetic, at best.
Karnold Isles League: An unspoken truce exists. Trading occurs, but that is the extent of it. The Dominion, as of yet, has no knowledge of their alliance with the Looters.
Looters: Although not offically at war, the Looters and the Dominion are in opposition. After the attack on Angel's Rest, a parley was sent. The Dominion has no knowledge of their activities on the east coast.
Enlightened Anama: A state of war exists. Until very recently, a weather spell was in effect, which stopped the Anama from sending forces directly to Karnold. After the attack on Angel's Rest, a parley was sent to Sharimik.
Avernite Protection League: Although they have professed a sort of peace, the League has attacked a small Dominion force. Suspicious, the Dominion sent a small group of magi to the mountains surrounding Fort Emergence, to scry the area. Developments pending.
Knights of Old Avernum: A trading agreement for crystals was made, but news of it never reached the Dominion, due to an attack by the Avernite Protection League. The Dominion also has no knowledge of King Lartaynior's death.
The Army of the Bright Star: No contact as of yet, although the Army has been active in the Golddale area.
The Rakshasi: The one and only contact with the tigers was the complete destruction of Angel's Rest.
The Alliance of Science and Education: No confrontation has developed with this new faction, but the only contacts have been strained. The Alliance has annexed the land west of the Sludge River, and has begun setting a school of magic in opposition to Redmark College. After the destruction of Angel's Rest, a parley was sent to Kriszan.

It's a little known fact that Nephilim have 7 nipples.

- One on the base of the left foot.
- Three directly behind the right ear.

Does that answer your question?

"... and it seems to have an entropic effect on the flux, thus causing the flow to disintegrate."

"Good work," Demetrius told the researcher. "This shows promise. I think..." A man came into the room and handed him a small letter, sealed with blue wax.

Demetrius frowned. "Excuse me," he said, and left the room. The blue wax said that the message was relayed by a Far Speak crystal, and likely urgent. These messages were to be given to him personally, no matter the time of day. He popped it open, and frowned again. The message should have been written in cipher, but wasn't. Smoke and fire from Krizsan; can see from Colchis was all the message said. This changed things. He looked up and spoke to the messenger. "Summon Archmage Tychius from his bedchamber, and tell him to go to my personal chambers immediately." He would have preferred leaving with Diego, but he was an Avernite, and would have no skill in what needed to be done.

***

Demetrius paused over the letter. Take the crystals into the cleft you found, and secure the area. He sealed it, and handed the letter to the waiting courier. "Take this to Agent Celeste in Golddale in all haste. Go through the mines." The man left, and almost immediately Tychius entered, still rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "Ah, good evening, Tychius," Demetrius said, smiling. "I believe that Krizsan is under attack." That woke the man up. "The calm before the storm has ended. Now, it is our job to ensure that the storm begins. Prepare yourself and your strongest students for a journey. We have a job to do near Golddale."

On behalf of GoldenKing:

Tygra returned the chaotic command room. An officer ran up to him and quickly saluted. "Sir, it seems the main enemy forces are retreating to the harbour area again." Tygra smiled. Finally, some good news. Either the raiders had found the chest, or had run out of charges for their magical items. "Also, sir, we've pulled most of the forces out of the harbour. The damage we can do against those ships is negligible compared to the devastation their cannons can cause."

Tygra nodded. "Good call. Send men out to hinder the retreat, but don't directly oppose them." No use sending more men into the meatgrinder. "Do anything: set up triplines, barricades, use your imagination. As they are slowed down, use the bowmen."

Another soldier came up. "Sir, we're getting reports of reinforcements from Delan, Colchis, and Silvar."

Tygra paused. This changed things. "Leave the main routes to the harbour open." He told the first man. "Tell the reinforcements to corral the enemy to the harbour. Once they are both in there, tell them to charge and fight hand-to-hand. Hopefully, the ships will stop using cannons, and we can set up the snipers in the harbour again." Both men left.

Okay, so the College has moved into a more defensible spot (a good idea, since it is a political power now). Sorry about the finding of Ernest's hut; I wasn't aware the time difference was that big. Still going to keep the crystals, though. Out of all the other factions, it seems the Dominion has been using magic the least. Time to change that...

Milla, I see your IC changes. Works for me.

Wonko, the bookmark was placed in the red herring chest. I was hoping you'd take it, find you couldn't disarm the traps in the battlefield, then put it on your ship, only to discover that the book contained therein was The Tearing of the Bodice. Too bad, that would have been funny...

Does anyone know why UBB didn't like me last night? I finally got the links in my sig to work, but had to put them all on a different line.

Yes, yes, I know. The tome isn't really that necessary at this point, but GoldenKing wants to keep it. After this massacre, I'll easily be able to rally the troops.

A major point of this post is to figure out why UBB doesn't like me.

On behalf of GoldenKing:

"Get those shields back up! Up, you honourless dogs!" Sergeant Cappas roared. The men quickly raised the tower shields again. "If the bowmen don't have cover while they're reloading, they're sitting ducks! C'mon you girls! You're not going to stop a charge with those pikes in every direction." Cappas sighed. These green recruits really were doing their best. He just hadn't suspected using them so soon. Still, they had done well, considering. A few broken charges made the enemy fear the pikemen, and ranged combat with tower shields as cover was an art they were beginning to master. If only it wasn't for those bloody men with wands! Around the corner marched a group of men. One raised a wand. "Crossbows, fi-"

The world erupted in flame.

"Gather as many guards as you can find in two minutes, then meet me at the chamber at the end of the hall," Tygra told the man who accompanied him as he left the library, a large book in his hand. Alone, he stode into the chamber. Trophies from his victories these past months filled it, but he paid them no heed. He walked to a corner of the room, and carefully placed both feet on one tile. In this crack here, and then a little push here... He shifted his feet to another tile. Pull the one in this crack, back to the first one, then push back and down... The wall slid downwards, revealing an ornate black chest. His brows drew down in concentration. The ruby first, then the emerald, then a push on the center of the design, then the emerald again... Finally, the chest unlocked safely. Tygra opened it and stared for a moment at the book within. When his mages found the beacon, they had advised moving it to another city to protect Krizsan. He had disagreed; any other city would have fallen to the assault Krizsan was weathering. Disposing of the bookmark was out of the question. He couldn't use the magic on everyone, and having your capital city attacked was justification enough to wage war. He carefully took the tome out of the chest - there were traps on the inside as well - and placed it under his arms. The book he had taken from the library was put in the chest, along with that intriguing bookmark.

Resetting the traps took much quicker. As he finished, a large group of guards returned. Tygra turned around. "Gentlemen, I entrust you with this artifact. The survival of the Hunters depends on its safety. Leave the building, find a group of fighters to aid you, and leave Krizsan. Be carefully, the chest is trapped." The men nodded and left him, running. Tygra gave them half an hour, tops. Hopefully, by the time the raiders discovered how to unlock the chest, they would be far from Krizsan. He left the room to find a good place to hide the tome, shaking his head. In the future, he would have to find another copy of The Tearing of the Bodice.

A nice IC solution. I'll let you control Lyonard.

Basically, other than the peasants in the harbour, the city streets are held with the pike/crossbow/tower shield combination.

Gotcha. I'm assuming that Tygra knows the book pretty well, so would have found it when he moved it. You don't have to remove it IC, I've a plan... herring is on the menu.

Yes, I probably came off a little harsh in that post (boy, I feel like I've said this already today...). That was my Hunter-alter-self talking; my Dominion-alter-self wouldn't mind the Hunters losing a little power.

Sorry, Aran. I was unaware that a definite location for Redmark College existed in the canon, and made up my own. Change it/leave it at your own discretion. I've always thought of it being highly defendable in a mountain crag, though...

I like the summary. I'll post tomorrow on there.

On behalf of GoldenKing:

At the first sign of combat, Tygra sprang into action. Not to grab his weapons and armour; he was no longer a mere bandit. He turned to the officer who had given him the report. "Tell the men they aren't rabble. Remind them of what they have been training for every since the last raid. Remember: crossbowmen and pikemen with the towershields on the ground, and archers to snipe from the rooftops. Tell the ranged fighters to aim for the wand-wielders. Now go!" He whirled and spoke to the man on his left. "Send pigeons to all the cities. Tell them the situation, and to defend themselves against any other armies that might be around." He paused for a moment, then continued. "Send another to Redmark College. I greatly doubt the wizards will be able to respond in time to aid us, but the sooner the counterattack, the better." He spun around to the man on his right. "Send out town criers. Rally the townspeople. Get them to arm themselves in any way possible, then get them to move into the harbour district." Time to test these pirates' mettle. He pointed to one of his guards, and began moving down a corridor. "You, come with me. I have an important task for you..."

EDIT: These lines have served their purpose, so I have retroactively causes them to change.
