Just curious: what exactly do you find hard to understand? Is is getting used to things like variables, conditional statements, and the like (the programming aspect)? Is it understanding the way states are created and used (the finite state machine aspect)? Or is it that you are overwhelmed by the number of calls you can make? Thuryl's right: the best way to pick up any programming language is to learn by example. The Cookbook's good: it doesn't teach you everything about the language, but it gives examples for the most common things you do. A list of nearly all the calls you can make, and an explanation for what they do, can be found in the Script Reference (I'd recommend going here, right clicking the link for it near the bottom of the page (or whatever the Mac equivilent is), and saving it to your computer). Also, links for many other resources, including scripts, can be found here. -------------------- Just Another AvernumScript Hacker. Please clarify: Does the entire game not work, or is it just to opening screen? Perhaps some of the graphics are missing. Also, make sure that when you are reinstalling, you are using a new download and not the same one. Solution: Buy a PC. They never have problems. :P -------------------- IF I EVER BECOME AN EVIL OVERLORD: If I decide to hold a contest of skill open to the general public, contestants will be required to remove their hooded cloaks and shave their beards before entering. Lost Nethexermumforgeland Core: You, an adventuring party comprised of Roman legionaries and Celtic warriors, stumble across a planar gateway. On the other side, you discover an entire nation of exiles living in caves. However, a shadowy force is altering the Exiles' genetics, causing their very appearance to change. To stop this conversion (or to aid it; the game has a multitude of different endings), you must journey deep into the core of the Exiles' homeland. There you must retrieve to Stone of Night, and make the choice of freeing or subduing their lost souls. -------------------- :P for clarity. Posts: 1509 | Registered: Tuesday, January 10 2006 08:00 |

Crap. (Hides a half-finished scenario, which also features a demon, if only obliquely.) A few points I'd consider: Why this backwater village? Why masquerade as a mayor? Why just one demon without any support? One idea is that this demon fled the netherworld due to some demon versus demon conflict (I'm just spitballing here, the idea just came to me and stuck). Moral ambiguity is also a good thing; there's no reason why the demon shouldn't have a few redeeming qualities. Maybe it (as mayor) has done many good things for the village, but is leading the townspeople towards something that suits its own purposes. In this case, it's not even necessary to mind-control the citizens. As for why the party's there in the first place, maybe the demon is including them in one of its plans. Try find another reason, though; I'm doing this in my scenario. ;) Demonic lair... a toughie, especially in a backwater village. The only thing I can think off at the moment is a portal to a demiplane, which doesn't really fit with the rest of the scenario. EDIT: That's odd... I'm not usually in the habit of placing random punctuation... -------------------- IF I EVER BECOME AN EVIL OVERLORD: If I come into possession of an artifact which can only be used by the pure of heart, I will not attempt to use it regardless. By Crowley: quote:Easy enough. Each creature is nothing more than a mass of statistics. One of them classifies what the creature is. You choose between human, nephilim, slith (or is it lizard?), undead, demon, vahnatai, etc. You can only choose one creature type. Seeing that there is no 'slith undead' slot, I'm guessing JV decided the Avatar fit better under another heading other that 'demon' or 'undead', possibly the slith (or lizard). The one way to check exactly which one is to read the BoA docs to find each groups strengths and weaknesses, then spend a few minutes narrowing it down. So yeah, the Avatars are neither undead nor demons because JV typed in a different number. Pretty anticlimatic, eh? -------------------- Help! A character sheet is attacking me! Crap on a stick. I have lost my post for the second time now! Stupid "Blah blah blah is not allowed. Please click your browser's back button to return." Time for the short short version. In Canada, the government tries to fix the problem, ineffectively. Giving equal job opportunity only goes so far. And giving eighteen years olds a lump sum payment is really, really stupid. I could say more (or... did... twice...), but I propose that we make this thread like the "Environment Questions" threads. How do we solve the specific problems facing the native community, such as: poverty, unemployment, lack of incentive, poor living conditions, crime rate, and more? -------------------- That is it. Almost nothing in the fantasy genre is original. Think about it: very few creatures in the Avernum series are truely unique. Chitrachs are just big praying mantises, and the Vahnatai fill the role elves usually do (to be fair, JV should be lauded in his choice to go with cat and lizard beings rather than going with the overused elves and dwarves). Try as I might, though, I can't think of any equivilent to the GIFTS. And what D&D monster is truely unique. There are only a handful; beholders and illithids are the only ones I can think of at the moment. A beholder can be described as [CENSORED], with [CENSORED]. The illithids, also known as [CENSORED], are a race of beings known for their [CENSORED]. However, WotC has not released these creatures under the OGL, so I cannot provide further details. -------------------- You mean the Mind Fla- DON'T say it! Superego: No, Dintiradan! Don't make a useless post with the sole purpose of repeating what everyone else has said! Instead, give advice on how to improve the scenario. Id: Do it. Do it. You know you want to. Besides, that line is begging to be used. Ego: (Click.) -------------------- Giants, troglodytes, gazers, demons and undead. Oh my! :D Seriously, choose something other than that for your first scenario. It appears to be far too large for a first try, and besides, plagues have been done before. By Ephesos: quote:Okay, the "I just fought him" was a little misleading. I'm sure I could beat if allotted the fifty-some-odd skill points that each character has, or if I turned off Torment. But where's the fun in that? None of the usual tricks worked on him (somehow, he was able to continue casting his spell while dazed. Odd.). And even when I reduced his HP by half, he'd just drink a potion and continue casting. Your comments have inspired me, however. I shall spend the next five hours attempting to defeat the Cauldron Bones and Black Shades through sheer force of arms. Ever since A1 I have always played a Nephil Archer, Slith Polefighter/Meatshield, Human Priest, and Human Mage (technically, they are all Customs). No traits, although I do use them for my singletons in BoA. A Fast on Feet Nephil Archer in the 4-Point AP system is a deadly thing. The trick isn't to find the perfect party, but find the perfect tactics for your party. For instance, at one point I was ambushed by Plated Chitrachs and everyone died except for my mage. I found out just how powerful a hasted mage casting Ice Lances and Daze repeatedly was. Is it just me, or are the magic users much more powerful than melee/range fighters? Perhaps it's just the fact that I only bother to allot skill points every ten levels or so. By Ephesos: quote:Odd, I just fought him yesterday. -------------------- Nociduas: You fools! Once I finish my thaumaturgy, I shall respond to your futile efforts in reducing my Hit Point total with a devastating Fireblast, and you shall... what are you doing? Hasted Adventurer: No thanks, I'd rather steal all your stuff as you are wasting your time. Catch you ten levels later! Posts: 1509 | Registered: Tuesday, January 10 2006 08:00 |

Also, is your saved game the default 'blades.sav'? Do you click 'Save Game' all the time or 'Save Game As'? The only thing I can think of is that you somehow have two copies of the saved game and you are alternating between the two. Very odd. I think we need to classify 'fantasy' games in sub-genres. Avernum, and especially Geneforge and Nethergate, are role-playing games. You have to find a role for your character(s) to play, and the gameplay is responsive to your choices. Compare this with MicroSoft's Dungeon Siege (my favourite example of a non-RPG). You start out as a farmer, but that's only important for the first five minutes. There is absolutely no choices in the games, not even the usual "Hmmm... should I take a left or continue going straight in this dungeon?" Games like this shouldn't be classified as CRPGs. Maybe "Action-Fantasy". By Ephesos: quote:FYT. :D :D -------------------- IF I EVER BECOME AN EVIL OVERLORD: No matter how much I want revenge, I will never order an underling "Leave him. He's mine!" Demetrius rubbed his forehead as he waited for the frail researcher to finish collecting his notes. The headache he had be cultivating the last few days had increased in pain almost instantly the moment he entered Abram's study. But, according to the pasty-skinned researcher, that was a good thing. It proved his experiments were working. "So you're saying you've found a feasible way to solve the problem?" he asked, as the balding man finally found the piece of parchment he was looking for. Abram blinked, then nodded. "The trick was not to rely on the mage. You see, when a wizard casts a spell to annul magic in his vicinity, he -" "He disrupts all magic in the area, including his initial spell, and magic is restored. Yes. I know. We talked about this yesterday, remember?" It was the reason why dispelling magic was relatively easy to accomplish, but creating an anti-magic field next to impossible. "Ah. Yes. Yesterday." Abram paused for a moment to collect his thoughts, then continued. "It was that which convinced me that a simple spell wasn't the answer. I turned to biology. You see, before I fled Avernum after the revolution, I studied the creatures of the deep caverns, especially the chitrachs. At one point, I had a number of live null bugs in the Tower Colony. One of the studies I performed on them was testing to see what part of them contributed to their anti-magic field." He pointed a knobbly finger towards his chest. "It was their heart. One of the most interesting things we found was what happened when we sedated the bugs. When their heartbeat slowed down, it ceased being an anti-magic field, and more of a periodic dispelling field." The man leaned closer, his face shining with excitement. "You see, they are one and the same. The null bug's heart is designed so that exactly when magic is restored to the area, the heart beats, creating a new dispelling field. That's why no wizard can create an anti-magic field. He simply cannot cast spell after spell the precise moment magic is returned. A heart, on the other hand, can. Or, perhaps, a highly specialized wand, of sorts." Abrams reached for a strange object on the shelf next to him, then looked solemnly up at Demetrius. "Meet my prototype for a Clockwork Resonator. You imbue a crystal with the spell - here. Then you place a power crystal - like so - and you wind up the mechanism." Abram glanced up again with a smile. "Gives you one heck of a headache. But I'm making progress." Demetrius listened on in amazement as the man droned on. He would need a lot of special parts for these, and quite a number of craftsmen trained, but this could actually work. *** Erhart looked back at the grey haze over the mountains. Soon, Archmage Tychius would get the message from his courier, and the weather spell would cease. The North Karnold offensive was no more than a pipe dream now, and there were better uses for the crystals. Facing forward again, he glanced at the other horsemen on the ferry. Almost at the northern shore, the men were attaching the white-flagged standards to their saddles. Once they reached North Karnold, they would ride north towards Sharimik, hugging the coastline. They were bearing letters handwritten by Magister Demetrius himself, warning of the Dominion's encounter with the Rakshasi. Erhart didn't have any ideas how the Anama and Looters would respond, but it was worth a shot. He had left another messenger at Golddale to travel towards what remained of Krizsan. Hopefully, the Alliance would be more favourable to the Dominion, even if their previous dealings were a little heavy-handed. The last thing the Dominion needed now was a fight with both humans and monsters. -------------------- I'll post on Diego and the Agents of North Karnold later. Astar?
