Um... picking music is tough... and I'll be going to B.C. for the long weekend, so don't expect me back until Tuesday at the latest. This has been bugging me for a while. I'm still relatively new to RPs, let alone starting one. Now I believe that guideline I wrote was poorly thought out. You know, this one: quote:Solving things IC is great... when it works. With a God RP, it could become as disastrous as this. So... talking in the OOC thread is good. We all care about our characters, but I doubt anybody is deliberately trying to make the RP experience horrible for someone else. If something concerns several people or more, post it on the OOC thread. If it's just in response to one post, or a concern that's just between two people, strongly consider sending a PM or e-mail. ... And thus the Five did travel to the great mountains; the River, the Throne, the Justicar, the Keeper of Lore, and the Forsaken Lord. They did ascend the Endless Stair, and viewing all of Kalandha there the Five together did call a Godsmoot. And as moths are drawn to a flame, so many of the Gods did travel to Angel’s Pinnacle in one accord. There above Kalandha they did sequester themselves, and did turn away their attention from its affairs for a time. So all of Kalazar and beyond did fall on their knees as one and did beseech the Gods to return, for the Fell Lord and his dark throng were becoming victorious in their war against Kalandha. And so it came to be that just when the fiends did surround mighty Kirwood itself, the supplication of its people did reach the Pinnacle, and the Gods did return to wage battle against the Fell Lord. There within Kirwood itself they did cast him down to whence he came, and together they did weave a great enchantment to ensorcel him there forevermore. And thus the Five did remain thereafter near Kalazar, to watch over the Seal they did create... -------------------- Looking up from the aged book, Ashataro yawned and rubbed his eyes. The tallow candle next to him needed replacing; its faltering light caused the shadows of the cramped study to shift about in a lurid dance. He withdrew a replacement from his overcoat and lit it before returning his gaze to the tome before him. His search at the Citizen’s Library had been unsuccessful; apparently, the book had been on loan to the library at Narrow Creek for quite some time. After discovering this, Ashataro had proceeded to the local monastery of his order. After convincing the seneschal that he was a senior member of the order, he was granted access to the closed studies for the day. Interpreting the books proved to be of little difficulty: the code they used nowadays was barely modified from the Zsarim code used back in the days of the Academy of Thought. He had seen similar accounts before; tales of elder gods and accounts of their exploits, passed down orally for centuries before being recorded in crumbling books. Ashataro didn’t know how much of the histories could be trusted: most were filled with misleading allegory or focussed solely on the feats of one god at the exclusion of others. The volume lying before him appeared to be one of the few he had seen where the contents had been compiled within a century after the events. In any case, it was much more coherent than most other accounts he had perused. Ashataro leaned back and propped his head up with a hand. Godsmoot. Wouldn’t that be convenient? It was hard enough to talk to new gods for his treatise, let alone get a group of them together. It seemed each and every one constantly spent their time attempting to increase their influence in the mortal realm. It was a sorry situation, and a vicious circle if Meletricia’s theory was true. A hue and cry had been raised in Zsarim academic circles those centuries ago when the seneschal of the Academy had proposed that the deities’ powers stemmed directly from their followers, yet now her belief was widespread. It certainly made sense: powerful gods and masses of followers invariably accompanied each other. Ashataro often wondered how much it applied to him. His followers had certainly dwindled over the past two and a half centuries. In the end, though, it didn’t matter. Nothing truly productive ever came from him exercising his divine might. A sudden thump rocked the building, and Ashataro barely caught the candle before it fell atop the book. Blowing it out, he staggered to the main foyer of the monastery and caught the sleeve of the seneschal as he backed away from one of the windows. “What is it?” “The gods,” the man replied; his creased face gone pale. “They fight atop the roofs in Joth.” Ashataro tilted his head for a moment before responding. “They seem to have stopped. Besides, I doubt they have plans to attack this cloister, if they even have the power to do so.” “Of course they have the power,” the seneschal responded, his attention still diverted to the window facing Joth. “I’m not some godless man from the Republic.” If only, Ashataro thought as he made his way to the monastery’s double doors. If only. Posts: 1509 | Registered: Tuesday, January 10 2006 08:00 |

D&D 3.0 and AGOT d20. Only one major campaign with D&D that has gone on for years (all the other campaigns usually last a three, four sessions before petering out, if they take place at all). DM is taking a break, so we're doing AGOT d20 over the summer. Had our first real session a week ago, which was decent. And my going to B.C. this weekend is going to make me miss a weekend bash with someone from Winnepeg. I apologize for taking so long to post again. I really don't have an excuse. By Nalyd: quote:I deliberately left that open, and people came up with their own backstory. There shouldn't be only one way, or Ashy would be out of a job. :) I realize that Kalandha has a lot more gods that most fantasy settings, but I don't think they should be a dime a dozen. I'm just a little leery of creating too many NPC gods. At the very least, I think mass ascension and armies of gods should be out. -------------------- I have an answering machine in my car. The gods argue, and upon us lands the spittle. - Saying among the Ubumal -------------------- Ashataro tugged the brown leather of his overcoat closer around himself as a chilling wind began to howl down the deserted alley. He glanced upward, but the nighttime sky remained clear, at least for now. It hadn’t always been so recently. In the days it took Fallian and Ashataro to travel from the wayside inn to Kirwood, sudden storms had come and gone over half a dozen times. After the last, even Fallian complained, making a quip about the temperament of whatever weather god held sway over the region. His smile never slipped, though. He had seen too many of Fallian’s like over the years, gods drunk on entitlement, constantly dabbling in mortal affairs. Most made a show of creating a central doctrine for their followers to follow, but Ashataro suspected it was little more than justifying their own behaviour. Ones like that combined the two characteristics he disliked most in deities: a theology that causes their followers to solely depend on them, and the notion that the privilege to interfere in worldly happenings whenever the whimsy strikes is undeniable. No, he had not been unhappy to part ways with the other god when they had reached the city gate. Fallian, of course, had made a charade of their parting words. “Ah, I will miss your company in the days ahead, my friend. I shall treasure all the discussions on your research and outlook on life we had on the road close to my heart,” Fallian had said, and Ashataro had responded by grating his teeth. His attempts to talk about the purpose of divinity and the need to restrain from interacting with mortals too much had dwindled over the past few days. The fact that Fallian had always found ways to bring up that farce at the tavern probably hadn’t helped matters either. Ashataro had kept his silence, and eventually Fallian had shrugged. “Very well, then. I suppose I had better hurry if I’m to meet the powers that be here.” Ashataro had frowned. “You mean that you can sense the direction to these new gods?” All Ashataro had to go on was a vague feeling. Of course, Fallian seemed to be the type to receive prayers from his followers, so perhaps that had something to do with it. The other deity had shaken his head, half his face illuminated by the moonlight. “Not directly. However, I do have other sources of information.” He had then stared up at the sky and winked. Strange. With one last infuriating smile, he had strode into the city. “Well, farewell. I’m off to spread my good news. Try not to give the common people too much of a cold shoulder.” The horsemen rode single file, each man in the sinuous line holding a torch; in the distance it looked like a glowing red snake. No, Fallian had it wrong, Ashataro thought to himself as he crossed a narrow street. Gods leading mortals leads to more woe than weal. He paused for a moment at another intersection, considering, and then took a right. It had been nearly a decade since he had last been in Kirwood, but he still remembered the way to a certain library. More current information could be obtained by entering one of the city’s many taverns, but each rumour with a kernel of truth would be balanced by a barrel of hearsay. Besides, he wanted to be more prepared before he sought out one of the other gods dwelling in Kirwood. Frankly, the idea of so many deities in one place gave Ashataro a cold feeling in the pit of his stomach. Meetings between two gods as often as not resulted in arguments, if not conflict, but a larger group in one place was a powder keg waiting to be lit. Finally reaching the library, he quietly opened the door and slide in. The place was nearly empty; as far as he could tell, only one person was studying in it, a large tome open before him. Ashataro walked to one of the back shelves and began to run a dark hand over the spines. If he recalled correctly, there was a book here that listed, among other things, much of what was known about meetings within the pantheon. It would be a good starting place.
