For which game? Croikle's editor will give you living tools for G1, and Slp006's editor for G3 will give you the money you need to go out and buy living tools. There's an editor for G2 lying around somewhere as well.

But also consider bumping up your mechanics skills if it is low.

Ordinary pants aren't important either way. They don't provide enough armor to justify wearing them, but they don't weigh enough to justify not wearing them. (Plus, the inns really only care about your adventurers wearing shoes and shirts. :P ) Dikiyoba's party wears them, but they also wear gold and silver jewelry before they find the enchanted stuff.

How would having an exoskeleton not make them invertebrates?

Here's part of the text when you first come across batons in G1:

But not all animals have brains. Jellyfish don't have brains, for instance. Baton creatures are likely simple invertebrate animals.

Dikiyoba decided not to answer some of the questions because Dikiyoba couldn't think of a good answer to them right away.
