Hmm, well, I guess that derails the charmingly self-deprecating apology I was about to type up for my not-botched-after-all conclusions. The minimum stats I used in testing were because I was using a saved endgame with a mage with those minimal stats to begin with, so I couldn't test lower conveniently. The results were very consistent, which is why I felt confident to make the extrapolations I did. EDIT: My not-so-nimble fingers making typos. ADD: One could have less than 15 Tool Use and boost other stats appropriately (to 48 total with the math I was using) to open all doors up to the level 35 door in Patrick's Tower. I noticed some level 60 or so doors Jeff had modified for the V1.0 release, but these are doors which quests or rewards eventually open. I haven't actually verified the highest level trap in the game, but it is no more than 15, and possibly less than 15. With the +3 Tool Use items, one could make do with 12 at the most, and possibly even a point or two less. The rest could be made up with more magic points as far as opening doors is concerned. P.P.S. Pardon my penchant for stating the obvious...er, um, if it seems obvious, that is. Tool Use of 11 is an adequate amount to get by the important traps, and you can eventually get +3 Tool Use from items to add to that. 8-10 might even be enough, really. I stopped at 11 with a singleton and played the rest of the game and was able to get into everthing and disarm all traps (with an item or two to help sometimes). -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

Your slith has some amount of free levels in poles and your nephil has some amount of free bow skills. Bump these up until you see trainable Blademaster and Sharpshooter. Also note that these skills will not appear trainable until after you commit the Skill Points and look again. -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

With any well-constructed party, this fight really shouldn't be too difficult, even in the line of sight. The method I described is the quick and easy way if you just want to get it over with, and also, what I had to do with my singleton in my last game. With four, it doesn't matter too much if one or two PC's get terrified or frozen for a few turns. -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

You can do it easily with one mage and/or priest. Park your party outside the room with the "blue guy". Haste the mage first, and send him in just far enough to see Blue Guy. Douse Blue Guy with acid, and then move the mage back out of the Blue Guy's line of sight until you can't see him anymore. Make sure your party is all further back also out of sight. If you haste your priest and can work it, send him just into the room to hit Blue Guy with Repel Spirit and move him out of sight before the end of each turn. If you keep your party out of sight at the end of each turn, the worst Blue Guy will do is summon some annoying critters which you can kill in between as necessary. Keep dousing Blue Guy with acid and Repel Spirit until he dies. As long as you are never in sight at the end of your turn, he can and will never attack you with anything directly. -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

I thought "yo" originated in rap/hip-hop culture in America in the early 80's. That, and Sting singing it on the Police's 1983 Synchronicity album. Turns out, I'm wrong. Rocky used it in the late 70's and Wilkipedia informs us it was used by U.S. infantry in WWI as a greeting. Jeff seems to take perverse pleasure in presenting us with at least a couple of ugly moral dilemmas in each game. The player is rewarded only when taking the low road: theft, killing friendly spiders, etc. This disturbs me every time I do it, even if it is "just a game". I feel like I'm generating bad karmic energy on principle or something. -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

Yeah, you could walk past Noci, pick up what you came there for, and leave. That is, unless you really need the 65 XP you'll get from killing him and his pet. Refreshing myself on my own game. Here's what I did: "I got the Emerald Chestguard successfully. I did it two ways. The first is so stupidly easy, I am quite sure Jeff forgot to make it necessary to get through Nociduas to get at the armor, instead of just sneaking by him. I also tried taking him and his pet demon off the map, and succeeded on my second or third attempt, but it took 8 Invulnerabilty Potions to do it, which is rather ridiculous." Daze and Slow are often helpful in these situations, if you have enough magical power to make Daze work against Noci. I saeem to recall mine wasn't working so well against him. Someone here said Terror works well on him, but I never tried that myself. There's no way as a singleton to do enough in time to stop Noci from summoning the demon. Seems like lots of Energy Potions and Invulnerability potions is the only reliable way to work it, and it's just a long, tedious, expensive...and unnecessary battle. -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

Slartster, I'm in essential agreement with most of your points here about language evolution. I haven't studied linguistics as you have, so my comments come mostly from everyday observation and reading literature. When I look at the diversity and richness of language used in English in 18th and 19th century novels or whatnot, today's speech and much of its writing seems very base and colorless, here in America anyway. I understand how arbitrary and ever-evolving any language is. My greatest lament is the seeming lack of a rich vocabulary. Many concise and colorful English words are dying the death due to atrophy. I love words and what can be accomplished with them. I think the single biggest contributor to the situation is the fact that people don't read much anymore, and we watch TV and play video games instead. When I read, when I hit a word I don't know, I get the dictionary, and perhaps make a new friend. Maybe, instead of "originally," I should say "previously." I don't know when many such things actually originated. American English, as it is commonly spoken, is at present rife with slang and vagueity. If I want to use more precise words, I run the risk of communicating less clearly, because few people know the meanings of many such words any longer. The words are still in the dictionary, but they are not in the lingo, and so will soon for all practical purposes, cease to exist. I know one thing. I don't intend to replace "fantastic" with "phat". It's clear when we think about it, that so much of what we as humans prefer and find "superior" is biased simply (and apart from analysis) by what is familiar and comfortable to us. Generations of family members carry on in the same religion, often without much objective introspection on why they would otherwise choose it out of the myriad choices. Windoze users often try out the Mac OS and immediately declare it sucks, because it seems so alien to what they become accustomed, when those who may have tried both more substantially will of course eventually pronounce the Mac OS as superior. ;) -------------------- A4 Items List A4 Singleton G4 Items List G4 Forging List G4 Insidious Infiltrator NR Items List Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

There are area spells (Icy Rain, Divine Fire, Fireblast), and you get a decently-sized oval to set around as many of your foes as possible. You can be inside that oval and not be harmed. Divine Retribution nails every foe within range...8-10 tiles away, I think. -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

They are easy to miss. Even in my last game, I forgot to visit them when I was in the area and had to go back later. To get there, look for a chitrach-infested tunnel just a bit NW of the Castle. You'll find the slith lands through some passages off to the NE when you pop back out. It's the area along the water a way north of the Castle, just like in previous Avernum games, but there is no main ground level way to get there now without boats. -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

I'm just teasing, because you made a pun. Principal is your money in the bank before interest is applied to it. Principle is the word you meant, where "it's the principle that counts." But in your case, because you got paid, you also got the "principal." OK, I thought it was funny, because your pun wasn't intentional, but I never said I wasn't alone in my being amused by it. :P -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

Well, my singleton adventure has drawn to a close, and I can now officially state that a singleton game is entirely doable, at least on Easy level. I think Normal would have been nearly as easy. I think Torment would be a challenge...mostly of one’s patience, if nothing else. Just whittling away that insanely rock-like Vahnatai Lord in Rentar’s Keep at the end is more annoying that anything else, especially since his Terror spells overrule Mindshield scrolls about 1/3 - 1/2 of the time, at least with my singleton’s relatively low intelligence. The only thing that does any significant damage to him really is Smite. Even worse, though, is the Vanhnatoi Rentar summons at the end. Not even worth the bother trying to kill it as NOTHING does above about 10 damage to it. I was just shy of Level 45 at the conclusion. I had 24 Blademaster and 17 Magery from DT/EW, 11 Bows and 14 Sharpshooter. For all four of these, all but two of each came as free bonuses. I had 3 Blademaster bonuses from gear, which means DT/EW give 19 Blademaster levels to a singleton by level 44. I was doing some terrific, er, wonderful, er awesome damage with melee, unlike any previous game where I thought melee was a bit wimpy. Spells all worked fine at two levels only, though I did notice some of them wearing off more often than normally with higher levels. With Tool Use 11, I was able to unlock a difficulty 28 door. The giant fight in the Dark Lands which Thuryl (I think) was concerned about, my singleton was so rock-like, that even the one turn they got to chuck a few stones at him did little damage. By four rounds of DIVINE FIRE!!! they were no more. That was especially gratifying, watching all those bodies drop at once. It took a long time to kill the Hakaai at the bridge. I also destroyed every last pylon before going into the Keep, in a vain attempt to gain one more level. I kept one Vahnatai escort alive up to the Mindreaper Lich just before facing You Know Who in the final chamber. I suppose if I had tried a little harder, I could have had company in the final fight too, but it really was almost more bother than help. I used a hella lot of Energy potions for the last set of battles, making up something like 30 of them when I found I couldn’t get to Craftmaster Strine without Dispel Barrier. I had a Divine Retribution field day. I used 2 or 3 Invulnerability potions in all of the last battles in total, but didn’t really need to use any. It was quite fun playing with a singleton, but having to sacrifice two or three skills to make him work is kind ofa drag. Tool Use, Arcane Lore, Nature Lore...two of these are going to suffer or be axed entirely to make it work Maybe Slarty will prove otherwise, but getting Arcane Lore and Mage Spells high enough to get Dispel Barrier means Tool Use and Nature Lore almost surely have to be left behind. I wouldn’t want to play without Dispel Barrier as a singleton again. It would be nice to get at a lot of those other spellbooks with the Arcane Lore necessary to get Dispel Barrier too. Caches are dispensible. They mostly contain herbs, crystals, helms, and the occasional piercing stones, and maybe a wisdom crystal or two...oh yes, and one with zero Arcane Lore requirements under Patrick’s Tower which amusingly enough contains a skull, heh. Nice touch, Jeff. Too bad it didn’t talk or otherwise entertain me. I think that I will try a duo game next, on Torment, like Vlish is trying. I want to be able to do everything in the game if I’m going to play once more. Eventually, someone will do Singleton on Torment. I see no reason it can’t be done. My nephil is pretty tired after doing so much by himself. He’s relaxing in semi-retirement at the Geyser Inn now with a very nice female nephil who hangs on his every word by the fireplace on cold evenings. Mrrrrrrrrr. I wonder if it could be a corrupted Prefs file? I never noticed this happen to me through three entire games now. -------------------- A4 Items • A4 Singleton • G4 Items • G4 Forging • G4 Infiltrator • NR Items • The Lonely Celt Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |
