IC: The Archbishop sat at his desk in his study and shuffled through reports and letters. He had heard strange news from all corners of Valorim, but the most recent of the letters was foremost in his mind, a letter from General Cyril. Very strange news indeed… Father Steele spoke, “Your holiness, these Anama we hear about in Sharimik must be impostors, the Church has not authorized any activity in that area.” “Of course they are fake,” the Archbishop replied, “my agents in Sharimik would never be foolish enough to reveal themselves.” “Then who are these men?” “Someone who wishes to see us fail. I see the subterfuge of vile wizards beneath this.” “Your holiness, perhaps we should abandon our efforts in Karnold Province, there are other places we can look to find metal.” “No, the wizards have slandered our Church, if we are to eradicate them from the continent then we will have to attack their breeding ground, Redmark College, to the South.” “We do not have the strength to deal with the wizards and a rebellion. Better to cut our losses and return to Bigail.” “No, ” Archbishop Knor replied, angry now at the thought of defeat at the hands of wizards, “that is why we will need allies in the area. My agents tell me that a man named Lord O’Leary runs Sharimik, a feudal Lord from a once great house, but he lacks a strong military. We have much to offer him.” “Your holiness, feudal Lords seldom bargain for religion.” “No father, not religion, we offer order. Fetch me parchment and ink, there is hope yet for our dominion of Karnold.” Father Steele brought the paper and was prepared to leave, but the Archbishop called to him before he could close the door, “Steele, bring me Xavier Cresden.” Steele stopped dead, visibly shaken. However he quickly recovered enough of his composure to reply “Your holiness, should I give him time to clean up first?” The archbishop had already turned back to his desk, “That will be fine.” A delay would be alright, it would give him time to write two letters, one to General Cyril, one to Lord O’Leary of Sharimik. OoC: Second post of the day, but they are both just talk and foreshadowing. [ Saturday, March 25, 2006 18:05: Message edited by: Lazarus ] -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. IC: General Cyril had served his homeland of Bigail for many years, and for many years he had put up with weak beauracrats afraid to take action. But now Knor sat in the High Priest’s seat in Shayder, and Cyril sat in the mayor’s office of Soft Port. “It is good that we at last have a leader who will act,” he thought to himself. Commander Varion entered the room and saluted. “General.” “Commander, how goes the taming of Soft Port?” Varion hesitantly replied, “General, the people of Soft Port have not backed down. Our unexpected attack took them by surprise, and easily won us the city. But now that we occupy it, there is much muttering amongst its citizens. The presence of the Looters has not helped things. The people don’t much appreciate their policy of stealing. I doubt they will find much of interest in a small city like this, but they resent it either way.” “This is to be expected, have there been any arrests?” “Things have been relatively peaceful, for now the people just talk, they have no real hope of driving us out. We did arrest a drunk who got in a bar fight with one of our soldiers, he was scourged and thrown out of the city.” “You know that I meant have any mages been found.” Commander Varion looks even more nervous, “We did find one mage, we arrested him.” “Good, has he been punished?” “General, the commoners are highly agitated over the mage's capture. The nearby lands are in the control of some sort of wizard faction, and the people actually have a great deal of concern for its members. If he is executed the entire countryside might rise up against us. If we are to move on Aminro and gain its iron supplies we might have to avoid arresting mages for a while.” “Hmmm, this is an interesting problem. Is this mage you arrested actually a member of this order, I would like to interrogate him.” “No sir, he is a common hedge wizard, but one can’t expect peasants to understand that.” The General looks disappointed, “Leave him in the dungeon for now. Is this all?” “Errrm, no sir, Sharimik has become a mad-house. Word is that they are rising up against the Anama.” “Rising up against the Anama? Knor never told me we had missionaries in Sharimik! This is very disturbing, for now do nothing to further inflame the people, we will show them that the Enlightened Anama can be benign to those who don’t resist. Send in my secretary, I wish to send a bird to the Archbishop requesting advice.” “It will be done General.” OoC: I fear that my anti-magic stance will become quite a hindrance if the one-upmanship continues between the other factions. As it is I am reduced to using carrier birds for messages. I think Thralni’s date idea is a solid one, but my knowledge of Avernum dates is zero. If the next person who posts puts a date, then I will start dating mine in relation to theirs. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? A banging on the door woke Shayan from his slumber. He groped about in the dark for his candle, “Who could be calling in the dead of night?” he asked himself. “Probably a peasant from Bavner coming to me with a sick goat or some such nonsense.” Another bang followed by a demand to open up. Peasants never demanded of a mage, and come to think of it, people rarely came to Shayan looking for help ever since the new fanaticals had taken power. After throwing on his robe, Shayan cracked open the door hesitantly, “What do you want of me?” A swift kick sent the door smashing in on him; Shayan found himself lying on his back looking up on five armored men. “We have a warrant for your arrest”, they didn’t wait for Shayan to answer before hauling him out, and setting fire to his home. As the prison cart rolled away from his home, Shayan could only watch as hit hut burned a blazing beacon in the sky. ------------------------------ A large crowd had gathered in the Temple of Shayder, and listened in rapture to the Archbishop speak. “The Enlightened Anama’s enemies tremble in fear. We have driven the cowardly wizards out of their dungeons and lairs, they will now stand trial for their crimes.” The crowd roared in delight. The Archbishop concluded his speech and filed out of the Temple, followed by his attendants. -------------------------------- As the Archbishop walked by, Father Steele called out to him. By this time he was in the upper hallways of the temple, and moving swiftly towards his personal study. “Archbishop, the purging has gone well, any wizard who was not captured has fled or gone into deep hiding. We have not heard a word of protest from the small folk.” Knor turned to reply, “This is good, but it is not enough. If we are to take our crusade to all of Ermarian we shall need to find a reliable supply of ore. Our island doesn’t lack for lumber or food, but we require mines. We will move on Karnold province.” “Your holiness, our fleet is strong, but we do not possess the strength to land an attack on a major city.” “I have met with the leader of the Looters, they will aid us in seizing Soft Port. From there we can move on the rich lands to the South East.” “Your holiness, from what I have heard these Looters’ sole goal is the pursuit of enchanted artifacts and arcane items, the old order used to bend the rules to accept such things but you…” “I have not changed my stance. There is no better choice to give us land support in our attack, if our alliance helps them succeed in finding the magic they desire, then so be it. Better that such things are in the hands of friends of the Anama than those of treacherous wizards. Small evils like this must be suffered if we are to at last see an end to the mages’ infectious presence.” -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? (Sorry I’m so late with my description, I take a day away from the boards and something significant happens.) Captain Keelfast kept himself aloof from the affairs of Kings and Empires. He certainly had no intention of getting involved in the upheaval on the Island of Bigail. An experienced captain knows that conflict rarely has good results for a merchant, and a captain as seasoned as Keelfast would avoid the ports of Shayder like the plague. But Keelfast didn’t have the luxury of looking for a more hospitable port. The Salt Spray’s mast had broken in a storm off the shore of Southpoint Lighthouse, and he needed a safe harbor for repairs. He entered Shayder dreading violence or seizure of his ship. But at the docks his crew was greeted by normal port activities. The news that had been circulating about strife and unrest on Bigail was clearly much exaggerated. The talk of the streets was the Archbishop Knor, who was to give his weekly sermon to the people this afternoon. Keelfast was hardly a religious man, but many of his crew were interested, and he figured it was his responsibility to make sure they didn’t do anything foolish. The speech was given in the Temple of Shayder, and flocks of people came out to listen, many wearing rings, many not. As the Archbishop spoke, the crowd’s emotions soared to a fever pitch. It wasn’t surprising that Captain Keelfast was not the only man who left that day wearing Anama rings. Group Name- The Enlightened Anama of Bigail Leader- Archbishop Darius Knor Location- Island of Bigail, Valorim Government- Theocracy Description- In the years after the plagues of Valorim, the Anama Church nearly fell apart. The religion suffered from poor leadership, and declining zeal amongst its followers. Over the years its policies had slackened to the point of accepting mages, and wizards slowly began to re-populate the island. Bigail no longer had an official religion, foreigners swarmed the island, and local leaders were helpless against marauding pirates and bandits. Darius Knor was a powerful public speaker who had gathered a large following in Bigail. He preached a return to the religious conviction of the past, and establishing a new national religion. This religion would be his own, the Enlightened Anama, named because of his proclamation that the old establishment was weak, and had lost sight of the true purpose of the religion. Perhaps the most popular aspect of his philosophy was the expulsion of mages and foreigners from the island. He blamed mages for the problems of the world, and reminded the people of the peaceful times before mages returned to the island. All conflicts in the history of Ermarian could be traced back to the bickering of wizards, he claimed. His following swelled to become a large majority of Bigail citizens. The governor was helpless, and at Knor’s demand he gave Knor the position of Head of the Church of Bigail. Knor immediately proclaimed himself Archbishop of the Enlightened Anama, and assumed the powers of the governor for his own. Knor was little more than a demagogue, and whether he himself believes his preachings is in doubt. His “sermons” are little more than war mongering and rabble rousing, but he gathers a larger following each day. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Well the glitching across the rune works, and I used unlock doors on level 3 to open door. It also is possible to get back across the rune and out of the tower. I have a screen shot, but can't figure out how to put it up. I'm sure most of you have seen it done before, so I won't lose to much sleep about it. Edit: This had me thinking, Ericas chamber is clearly just a red heron, and isn't relevant to the plot. But how about the chamber in Ghirka? Sure enough you can get there too, before you are supposed too. It opens up some interesting plot holes, and quite possibly tore a hole in the fabric of time-space. Crokle sure seems down on post enhancers. We all know that there is scientific evidence proving that they have NO side effects. Besides, they are all natural. What easier way to gain a little well earned respect from the neighborhood? Nice script Dikiyoba, but it seems that each forum goes down a little quicker than the last. Well thanks for the advice. I'm kinda bummed over that there aren't any secret passages, but I'm glad I asked here so I won't have to go crazy looking for things that aren't there. I've got pretty used to movement, but I still sometimes get messed up when it automatically puts you into battle. This is another question that I just thought of. I've noticed that the log of turns in the game is gone. Instead things like "Hits for 10" or "Goblin Dies" are flashed up in the lower left corner. But I usually don't have time to read these in battle, is there anyway to make them stay up for longer? -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? I finally downloaded the windows demo version of Avernum 4, and after all the negative opinions of it I expected a complete piece of garbage (no outdoor map!!! Preposterous!!!) Some of the new quirks seem to work, others not so well. I'll hold out on the final judgement, but before I continue playing I have to ask if a few annoying things I found could be overcome. 1. Is there anyway to change the way you move with the mouse?? I set it so the screen will follow me, but I still dislike the move to a spot system, and the keypad is kind of disorienting. 2. Are there any secret passages?? I will stop looking for them if not, if so then how do you even find them. You cant attempt to walk into walls anymore. 3. How can you look at a spot. Right click does nothing, and pressing 'L' does nothing too. I want to know what these strange new terrain are supposed to be, but can't search them. 4. Is there anyway to change between the automap and your inventory? This is usually just a minor inconvenience, but when you are shopping for new equipment it can be a big pain. 5. This isnt so much a question as a rant. Where are all the different PC graphics? My adventurers hold their swords like flagposts, and I only have two choices for Ssssschah. My god why must area of effect spells cost the lives of alchemy and any diversity in graphics. -Before you ask, yes I have looked at the help files. I skimmed them thoroughly and found nothing of use to me. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? I missed his posts demanding that Vish get banned, but I know Stareye banned him about 5 minutes after he "JUMPS ON ON TABLE NAKED AND STARTS HITTING HIS MAC WITH A BASEBALL BAT WHILE SINGING BEETOVENS FIFTH!"
