How Did You Find Spiderweb? in General

Long long ago, when the world was a much better place, I ate a piece of cake, but that's got nothing to do with this thread.

So anyway, I used to look around on these websites that got all these links to demos of Mac shareware games and game demos, and amongst these I found Avernum 3. I started playing it, and, like you all probably did, I clicked the "register" button to try and see if I could enter the right registration code (I failed), when I noticed the long story about how to purchase the game. Amongst these methods I saw the spiderweb URL, so i checked that out. I downloaded the other demos, including BoA. Then I started designing a bit. However, as I was a complete failure at that, I asked Jeff for some help, who referred me to the boards.

That's it, I guess. Now you'll have to put up with me.

Probably, yeah, but for that you'd probably have to completely alter BoA so it would understand where to look for the graphics and what to look for. Besides, we can put in custom sounds :P

Seconded. And why are you telling us about secrets in your scenario? It spoils the fun if you start telling us about every single detail.

Oh, I didn't notice people were still responding to this thread.

Ming: Yes, I'm still working on it. True, i didn't do much about it over the last month or so, but what i did work a lot on, was the Nephil language, which is a very important part of the scenario. So in summary: I didn't do a lot of actual designing, but I did do a lot of other stuff.

Defender: thanks! Yeah, I always welcome new testers.

To be honest, what I find interesting about this poll, is that the majority of Spidderwebbers think that the Bible is completely manmade (which, I think, is the equivalent of "the Bible is fake").

Alas, I voted 3.

This souns to me like irritation and endless repetition. I do encourage you to make a scenario, but why not something with more light and no demons?

That depends... what version is the server's software? If it's lower than 2.3, Mac users won't be able to connect to it...

We could have mutliple narrators. I mean, listening to just one person all the time and his opinions seems a bit boring to me. Maybe we should have it like IMG's podcast, and have two or three people talking to each other, who exchange opinions, take turns in telling the news, etc. That'd maybe work out best.

Possible subject could be the following:
- General news from SW
- New stuff that came out in the last month (scenarios, walkthroughs, whatever)
- BoA/BoE scenario reviews reviewed (maybe even let the scenario designer tell what he thinks of the reviews?)

I actually do think this could be something, but we should only bring out a podcast when circumstances warrant it, and not just do one because we have to every month.

The narrator point is probably the biggest problem of all. For as far as I have seen a lot of people are either busy or too weird to be trusted. What we can discuss, though, isn't that big a problem. At least, for the first few episodes, after that it may indeed get a bit more problematic...

I just discovered that podcasts are actually quite entertaining, and I wondered if it wouldn't be nice if we brought out a Spiderweb podcast every month, in which we summarize what happened over the last month with Spiderweb, it's games, the forums etc.

What do you guys think?

I listen mostly to either metal or classical music. Metalbands I specifically like are: Trivium (duh), Rhapsody of Fire, System of a Down, Wintersun, Rammstein, Kamelot, In Flames, Apocalyptica and Radiohead.

Classical composers I love are the following: Most of the Russian composers (Tschaikovsky, Mussorgski, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Rimski-Korsakov, Shostakovich especially), Mahler, Holst, Verdi, Wagner, Elgar, Dvorak, Carl Orff, Bruckner, John Williams, Klaus Badelt and Bernstein.

I suppose you can also go to last.fm and look at what bands I listen too, but it tracks just about nothing of the classical music I listen too, I'm afraid.

BoA for Mac, and that's it. Played the demos of all the others, though... Well, except Avernum 4, BoE and Geneforge 4.

The sole reason I stay away from both Doom and Fear, is the fact that I am somewhat weary of creepy games. As it is, I get all nervous from FPSs, but if it gets dark and I can't really see well what's happening, I already get totally freaked out. Reading the Wired reviw, the creepiness is mentioned more than once, which doesn't give me a comfortable feeling. While on the one hand I get somewhat curious to know what the plot twist they speak of is, and I get curious to know what moral dillemas I will encounter, I hate creepiness (Mind you I'd probably just blast the little sisters away).

And that's why I like Avernum: Because of its graphics, because it is turn based and because its from an angle that's sort of above the player, I feel I can see what happens around me at all times, and I don't get freaked out. This makes, for me, for relaxing gameplay.

Agreed. Any console that has regular problems with catching on fire isn't really on my list of good investments.

I didn't hear about that one, actually. Now it's just one more reason not to buy it, though. But what I was reffering too, was the enorous amounts of complaints of people in Holland whose game CDs got very badly scratched because of astupid mistake Microsoft made while designing the XBox: they forgot these tiny cushions that should make it impossible for the CD's surface to touch the lasereye and that way get scratched.

Yes, Microsoft is still denying any reponsibility and says it's the owner's fault, even though there are hundreds upon hundreds of people who have the problem.

Randomizer: yes, Bill gates indeed admitted that in that interview he had together with Steve Jobs. Apparently it was when the Xbox was about to be released and games were designed, when Microsoft ordered the biggest amount of Macs in the history of Apple. How ironic is that...

Yeah, Wolfenstein 3D was the very first FPS, I gathered. I have the fourth game in the series: Return to castle wolfenstein, and I love it. I heard a while ago that a film would be made out of it, and next year a sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein should be released, or so I understood from several obscure press releases.

On topic, though, RPG and FPS combined seems strange to me, and I can't really understand how it would work. What you menion sounds more as a standard RPG than a FPS to me, to be honest...

Don't see why. There is a world's worth of difference between online distribution and manufacturing a jillion CDs/cartridges. Sony, etc. will never let me make a full game, but these channels for indie developers are intriguing.

- Jeff Vogel

Because all posts at the beginning of this thread say the same: "Jeff has tunred it down before and will do so now again." Now you come and post, and say you think it's a good idea. Therefor, we are taken by surprise a bit. Espacially because there have been a lot more of these topics in which is also said that you will not release your games for consoles.

I will not buy an Xbox, never. I have heard too many bad things about it.
