Wiki cites 1935 as the beginning of the lobotomy era, but I find that a bit doubtful. My sense is that this procedure may have been performed in the late 19th century as well, but perhaps not as publicised as the Lima-Moniz trials.

Anyhow, given the success rates, I can't see how the steady streams of anti-psychotics medicines are any better or worse than the physical procedure.

Well done to everyone that entered the contest. Jeff, as usual, didn't ask me what I thought of the scenarios, and thus the rankings are in the wrong order. Good job Kel and TM for the top three, and to everyone else that placed or even finished a scenario.

Okay, I'm curious where this fad took place. Cuz here in the States we had fads related to being young, boozing, spawning, gambling (NYSE), starving, and sick with flu-like symptoms. I don't remember the testicles being part of any of those things. And where did the testicles come from? I mean, I know where testicles come from, but where did the monkeys come from that donated their testicles? Also, were the testicles treated in any way prior to insertion, or were they raw?

What about one of those map thingies where guests can stick a pin on their location. I've seen other websites that use that applet, but I can't remember where.

Hurricane Katrina in General

The hurricane started (like all hurricanes) in that part of the gulf known as the Atlantic Ocean. Furthermore, the origins can be traced back to the monsoons which sweep from the Indian Ocean off the eastern African coast up to the northeast (india, malyasia, etc) and the resultant weather patterns over the African continent.

One major predictor used by the NWS for the general character of the hurricane season is the character of the monsoon season. In any case, this one travelled the width of the Atlantic before skipping across the tip of Florida and then into the Gulf.

Sea temperature plays a huge role in the strength (but not frequency) of hurricanes, which is one reason it went from a mild Category 1 while over the Atlantic to the awe inspiring Category 5 in its short time over the Gulf. Global warming/cooling doesn't seem to affect hurricane strength, and the jury is still out on how it affects frequency.

That position would have created quite the dilemna for the artists that created on commission. I would have to take the position that most of the "great" works of art from the 1400's through 1800's would not exist without the private party.

You need to rethink this position in terms of how art is being valued. What gives it that value, and how to grade "worthiness" of that art.

A) Mr. A's family has every right to demand the return of the painting. Provided that they know it exists and have been informed of its condition by Mr. C, but if Mr. C wants to keep it, why on earth would he be talking to anyone about it?

B) Stolen paintings that are sold at auction (assuming the sale isn't stopped immediately) would presumably have the proceeds put in escrow for the original owners to receive.

C) No. It is likely the painting would not be recognized, and the trashman would simply have a heavier burden one day. The theft would be unsolved.

D) Nope.

The problem here lies in that the painting is owned by Mr. A as a work of art, and not as an investment. It presumably was appreciated for its beauty, and the disappearance removed that. Money can not replace beauty, and it sounds like there was no intention of replacing anything stolen since it wasn't insured. It's like the Toulouse-Lautrec I own. Nice to look at, but I wouldn't replace it or bemoan the loss if it went missing.

Welcome back, etc etc, but in reference to your use of the word "toll," did you mean

1. tool,

2. troll, or

3. some mixture of the two?

(4. or a toll that must be paid for reading these boards?)

Your Favorite Source of Energy in General

Assuming that hydro dams are built with fish passage in mind, there are still problems with the current design. Every river transports sediment through the energy of the moving water. As soon as that water slows, the sediment drops out, elevating the river bed. Eventually the area behind a dam goes from 100% water to 25% water/75% silt and there isn't enough stored water to power the turbines during the late summer months.

I'm not aware of efforts to remove the silt, but it seems like it hasn't happened in my area yet. I would have to wonder if the EPA would also consider that the silt had toxic materials in it, making it hazardous waste as soon as it was removed from the river bed. Anyway, hydro dams have a lifespan of around 100 years, depending on how much sediment gets captured in the impoundment, and the cleanup problem at the end is dangerous and daunting.

1. I am not prominent, just opinionated.

2. I like it that Ash gets to judge who is/n't prominent. It makes it much simpler when only one person makes that decision.

I would suspect that Jeff regularly scoffs at everyone that makes judgements based on partial or incomplete information. Which includes pretty much all of humanity. What I have trouble believing is that he bothered to read this thread.

That does sound like a problem, but I think I know the fix.

Do a file find for modem.sys, and then delete that file. You should not have a problem with the post counts with that annoying file gone.
