Heh - Appleton's just a small two hour drive north! As for UW, there's always UW-zero. :D Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

While half-listening to Bush's press conference today, one journalist mentioned to him in a question that the AP has reported that Arafat just died (this is unconfirmed). What do you all think about this? What impact might this have on the peace effort and Israeli-Palestinian relations? A set back, or a chance for a new start? I use my real name in forums (when it's available - it's pretty common) because I think doing so is more genuine and honest. Because my participation here largely occurs on the sly at work, most of my posts on this forum are created quickly, so I frequently have to go back and edit what I've put out there. I'd like to think that I'm much more articulate in the "real world," though it may not be the case. :) This forum for me is a great diversion during a dull, dull day job. Otherwise, I have a pretty hopping life after work - I spend lots of time with my gf, I run (and hash), I hike, I hang out with my roommate and other friends from grad school (a good share of them have moved out here), and I try to take advantage of everything DC has to offer, which is no small task! For what it's worth, I think just about everyone on this board is great, and a pretty colorful crew at that. I hope that I don't come across as a total bore! Well, if it is, and I doubt it, they aren't spending their money in the Northern Virginia market, 'cause we aren't getting any ads. :) Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Where I live, the DC/Virginia region, there are hardly any ads at all, since DC is Democrat territory to a profound degree and Virginia is pretty soundly in POTUS' pocket. I think though that I would prefer the political ads while I watch the World Series to those blasted Mazda ads - "There's this car that has all this stuff! Then I see another car, and it has all this stuff!" Jesus! What the heck demographic are they trying to break into with that ad? Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I doubt that the rest of the Arab world will stop funding the Palestinians under the table anytime soon. They all hate Israel as much as the Palestinians. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I had the impression that Arafat really hasn't been running the show at this point so much as Hamas has. The more I look at what Hamas has been doing, the more I see parallels with N. Ireland's Sinn Fein, albeit with suicide bombers. If that conflict serves as any sort of true comparison though, then Israel's in for a long ride yet. I used image because I thought it was a better term for covering everything you might display. It's also a bit more electronically-oriented, IMO, and so more suited for web content. Of course, if this copyright isn't needed for web content, then feel free to use whatever else you find suitable. Belligerence from liberals usually only comes out on issues like smoking bans and the environment. Otherwise, seeing as liberals usually have actually lifting people up in mind, it's hard for them to sound belligerent. What I like about Michael Moore is that his attacks usually consist of throwing existing footage out there, not just making unfounded blanket statements. Although he is a bit self-righteous, and he does edit his scenes together a bit for the greatest effect, largely the facts speak for themselves, which I guess people can't take. EDIT: I would encourage all of you to find and watch the clip of Jon Stewart on CNN's Crossfire - a good and very sincere interview! You can easily find it by googling it. He'll probably be a lackey. Interns in the U.S. Congress don't do much other than dress really nice, answer constituent mail, occasionally lead tours of the offices, run for coffee, flirt with one another, try to look like they're serious and paying attention when they attend committee hearings, and party hard in the evenings on mom and dad's dime. You may want to do something more like the following: "All images © 2004 YOUR NAME. These images may be used for personal viewing pleasure only - commercial use of these images is prohibited." ...or some such. EDIT: Alternately, what you seem to be wanting to say is "I hold the copyright on these pictures." I just spent an informative couple minutes on the US Copyright department site, www.copyright.gov. This may be able to help with formatting issues. [ Wednesday, October 20, 2004 09:18: Message edited by: Andrew Miller ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

quote:Yeah, that busted pain killer addict sure showed Michael Moore! Rush Limbaugh - now there's a great role model! Seriously, how does this guy have any credibility left? Maybe I'll become a successful conservative pundit too - all you have to do apparently is spout out blistering and unfounded hateful right wing diatribe, no matter what sort of lifestyle you've led previously. Dems detest Ann Coulter because they know she's wrong and yet people buy into what she says - kind of the same thing as hating Hitler. Also on account of the awful leather top she's wearing on the cover of her latest. :P Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Just put "Copyright © 2004 YOUR NAME" Alternately, you can leave out the word "Copyright" if you have the symbol in place. [ Tuesday, October 19, 2004 11:58: Message edited by: Andrew Miller ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

How about the desire of the Jewish population of the US that Israel continue to exist? It certainly seems to be important to them, and they've worked very hard to insure that they're in the position to achieve their policy goals. The Jewish community is an astonishingly well organized collective action force, and largely rich and affluent, with many members involved in key places in US society and industry. By contrast, there really isn't a strong or effective interest in rolling policy the other way, but there's no reason why a group in the US couldn't take a similar initiative, in theory. quote:No. Instability largely has negative economic effects, which make superpowers cry. Instability in this region -> instability in oil production (e.g., attacks on Iraqi oil pipelines) -> increase in risk premiums -> higher prices. The middle east is also not known for its cheap labor - when have you ever seen anything labeled "Made in Jordan"? For the longest time, Saudi Arabia has had to import workers to drive their cars, maintain their buildings, and provide services, because almost the entire citizen population of Saudi Arabia is on the government dole, and this work is considered "beneath" them. The biggest problem in most of the middle east, IMHO, is that their economies are based on single resource extraction, which is an inherently undemocratic economic model. Note that Iran, which doesn't really export all that much oil in comparison to its neighbors but has comparitively more industry, is relatively stable and successful, despite the fact that we hate its politics. Among the populations of the oil producers, however, the rich get richer while the poor get poorer and Wahabism, and there you go. Add religious indignation at their fellow Arab brothers, the Palestinians, being repressed by another government with its own religious mandate, and presto! trouble's a'brewin'. I'm actually not 100% against Israel's wall. It has succeeded in doing what so many attempts at cease fires and truces have not - reduced the number of suicide attacks in Israel. It also is a physical sign to the Palestinians that Israel doesn't think that they can be trusted. I do think that Israel should withdraw the settlements, but I think the Palestinians need to do some soul searching with regard to what they can realistically achieve and how thy can make things better for themselves now that Israel won't sit at a table with them.
