Patrick O'Brian's "Master and Commander" series is quite good - I've read 13 of 20 so far. The nautical terms are a bit daunting, but otherwise it's not too challenging - kind of like Jane Austen for men. Speaking of which, you may actually want to give "Pride and Prejudice" a go. I was quite "prejudiced" against the notion of reading it at first, but at the prompting of my fiancee, I took it on, and actually really enjoyed it. Jane Austen's style is witty and her humor delightfully dry. Otherwise, I recommend the "Aeneid." It doesn't take too long to read, and is very enjoyable, I reckon, aside from it being the unfinished master propaganda piece of Augustan Rome. Not all of us have the hardware or wherewithal to register for a monthly fee-based MMORPG. Some of us also just don't dig those games. [ Tuesday, December 28, 2004 05:51: Message edited by: Andrew Miller ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I'm going to my future inlaws for the holidays tonight for the weekend (and thus offline), so I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas (the date for which was stolen from the cult of the aforementioned Mithras, who was said to be born as the sun springing from a crack in a rock round about this time of year). Best to everyone. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I think FF is definitely a cRPG. If you say it isn't, then no cRPG is technically an RPG, because none of them allow the freedom of traditional pencil and paper RPGs. The first cRPGs I ever played were Dragon Warrior, Ultima: Exodus, and Final Fantasy on the NES, and Curse of the Azure Bonds (Gold Box) on the Apple IIgs. None of these games allowed much freedom - paths were pretty pre-determined. But all of them incorporated elements of traditional RPGs - character development, hit points, experience, etc, and involved a story. Do any RPGs truly allow the freedom to do whatever you want? Even in traditional pencil and paper RPGs, if you steer too far away from what the game master has planned, you can run into problems. EDIT: As for the GBA, do NOT get FF Tactics Advanced - it is nowhere near as good as the original PS1 game. The rules system and limited job progression based on race make the game unfun. I'll second Planescape: Torment, if you can find it - it was a pretty good time, and would likely be up your alley. I seem to recollect that you dislike FF, but I know you like anime, so if you have a GC you may want to check out Tales of Symphonia. I rented it last week, and enjoyed it pretty well. I also recommend Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, not as an RPG, but as a great game in a hallmark series. If you have just the PC, I would also recommend Icewind Dale 2 (especially over either BG), and if your PC is beefy enough, Temple of Elemental Evil. All I know is comparing an admittedly fantastic Triple Crown winner with the badass hoplite general who played the Athenians off the Spartans off the Athenians off the Persians is no contest - it's Alcibiades. Ignorance of history is a poor excuse. Also, thoroughbreds are not warhorses - they aren't as large as many other breeds and have to be pampered to a high degree. I would contest the first round. Just spend five minutes googling Alcibiades and realize the error of your ways. Secretariat wouldn't get within ten feet of Alcibiades before he had him skewered on his spear. A horse versus a Greek hoplite general? Give me a break. Cataline failed in his efforts, though, whereas Hannibal was a true badass. He essentially had Rome by the balls until they finally got their act together and got a little sly. That he made so much progress against the greatest nation ever is to be commended. I believe his name was even invoked by mothers to get their children to behave. I stand in awe of your posting prowess, Kel. Unlike other recent newbs who spam away to bolster their post count, I am reluctant to follow suit. Though we've been members roughly as long as one another, you nevertheless have been able to match quantity with quality, a substantive achievement indeed - may Allah bless you with one thousand sons. Here's a photo of Di and I at the end of July: ![]() Not the best photo of either of us (I was holding the camera, and my shirt was given to me as a joke), but pretty charming, I think. :) [ Thursday, December 09, 2004 05:52: Message edited by: Andrew Miller ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

There is a d100. However, preventing it from rolling off the table is problematic. It's also tricky to read. :) Has anyone come up with a use for the d30, out of curiosity? Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

When the dollar is weaker relative to the euro, imports from Europe (which are purchased in euros) cost more. The usual result of this is that US consumers then are more likely to purchase products manufactured in the US. This in theory would bolster the US economy by increasing demand for US goods, leading to an increase in employment/wages/whatever. HOWEVER, a country can't devalue its way to prosperity.
