I went to Gencon once. An event where all the "XXL" size tee-shirts for game masters are the first to run out. It convinced me to leap immediately back into the gaming closet. Funniest thing I saw during Gencon: prostitutes propositioning hardcore gamers. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

The problem I encountered when considering DSL was that the provider in my area, Verizon, requires logging in prior to use. My roommate and I wanted to have a wireless router so that we could just tap into the service whenever we wanted. We determined that this would be more easily accomplished through cable. Whatever cable service you can get is entirely dependent on the provider(s) in your area. In Arlington, VA, the only option for me was Comcast. You may have more than one option though. I do believe, though, that most cable providers are bundling a cable modem in with their service these days. I rent one from Comcast for $3 a month, which is quite manageable. As for getting the service with or without TV cable, in my market Comcast provides a price break on the highspeed if you purchase a TV cable plan as well. The discount is comparable to the price of their "ghetto" cable plan - that is, all the stations you'd find broadcasted, some home shopping, and CSPAN - but it isn't too bad, considering the reception is perfect. The whole package for my roommate and me is $60 a month. I think it's worth it. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

quote:Not true. Israel has already demonstrated its capacity to defend itself in the region. For example, it attacked Iraqi nuclear facilities at Osirak in 1981 on its own initiative. Israel instead relies on the U.S. to legitimize its actions. I don't think, however, that a withdrawal of U.S. support would prevent Israel from doing what it feels it needs to do to defend itself. Actually, Jefferson was the isolationist. Walter Russell Mead in his work Special Providence came up with a good means for distinguishing citizens' stances on U.S. foreign policy by breaking them into four camps based on the policies of four presidents: The Hamiltonians, the Jacksonians, the Jeffersonians, and the Wilsonians. The Hamiltonian approach to foreign policy is largely economic in nature; Jeffersonians are characterized by a policy of non-intervention; Wilsonians favor intervention for humanitarian and democratizing purposes; and the Jacksonian view is more or less the same as "red state" America's. According to Russell Mead, while during the Clinton administration the Wilsonian camp played a large role, and the beginning of W's was Jeffersonian, it's the Jacksonian camp that's most influential post-9/11. I've grossly generalized Russell Mead's work here, so take this with a grain of salt, but believe me - it's worth a read. I find the dimension this work adds to American policy debate much more useful than just the regular Republican-Democrat split, which really is only useful for domestic policy concerns. Hey Aran, the States aren't that divided. Now that the election is over, it almost feels like people are setting aside their differences, if only from exhaustion, and a somber sort of peace prevails. This will get flung out the window when Congress comes back into session in January, but for now, it's rather nice. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Ashcroft has resigned. Maybe now the drapes will come off the statues. :) [ Friday, November 12, 2004 07:22: Message edited by: Andrew Miller ] Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I believe there was a desire expressed among the Palestinian "people" that he be buried in Jerusalem. I agree with the view though that he shouldn't. Burying him there further legitimizes the Palestinians' claims to the city, at least in their minds, which would only make finding a peace settlement that much trickier, as it's likely at this point that no such settlement will include any portion of Jerusalem. Unfortunately though, Kel, the US is in that position. I believe however that the US does carry weight with Israel, and with Arafat gone, there will be room now for progress to be made. The fact that Arafat was in power pretty much meant that there was no possibility of further discussions. Now that Sharon's mortal enemy is gone, at least that possibility is back on the table. I'm feeling cautiously optimistic at this point. Sharon, defying the will of his party, has ordered the withdrawal of settlements in Gaza. The prize, of course, is the West Bank, so we'll see what happens there, but this has been a step in the right direction. The wall, though a fundamentally bad thing, I think has served as a sobering message to the Palestinians that they've burned up any goodwill with Israel they had, and that if they want to move forward, they'll need to get their own house in order. There's always the risk that Hamas will fill the vacuum, but I think that the Palestinians who are tired of the violence are starting to realize that Hamas doesn't offer them a real solution. We'll see though. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Hey, at least Ashcroft's out. :) BT, isn't just paying the interest essentially the same thing as renting, with crazy additional liability? Doesn't seem like a great deal to me... Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

spy, are you suggesting Arafat was a "right one?" Sharon just went against the will of the Likud party and started settlement withdrawals. That to me signifies that he's taking the right steps.
