Are you going to advertise on the basis of your IQ? I'm sure that would go over well.

Note that there isn't necessarily any correlation between IQ and tutoring ability.

My roommate is going to be heading off to Afghanistan for four months, and won't have much to do there, so he's looking for good PC game recs. He's not really into RPGs, probably could be into RTSs, and will have his laptop, so Doom3 is out. What do y'all in PC Land recommend? Thanks!

EDIT: Having just given it some thought, I reckon Fallout/Fallout 2 would make great joke/real gifts for someone heading to Afghanistan. :)

EDIT 2: Also, cheap = good.

Given the vast number of cable channels available these days, it IS astonishing no one picked them up (Lifetime, Bravo, where are you?). However, it simply boils down to a societal lack of interest in anything that's not the best and the most beautiful - kalos kai agathos, as the Greeks said back in the day. Unless these athletes can compete with people who are "whole," people generally won't be interested. It's the same reason the NIT isn't more widely covered - no one cares when the higher prestige NCAA tournament is on.

As an event, I think the Paralympics is awesome. Such activities provide goals for people to strive toward, which I think is a healthy thing.

Too much of anything can have negative/unanticipated consequences. Excessive computer gaming can lead to an anti-social, sedentary lifestyle that has negative consequences for your health as well as your professional and social life, not to mention your academic life!

Whatever, dude. Tastes vary. If I find the taste of High Life comparable to (and frequently better than) more expensive beers, I'll drink High Life, and save the difference for other things I like.

Why don't you eat hamburgers? Taste better than veggie burgers and they're cheaper.

There is more to drinking than just getting drunk. I genuinely enjoy the taste of beer - even crappy American beer. My favorite beer right now actually is Miller High Life - the Champagne of Beers. :D This of course has more to do with the fact that beer is uber-expensive in the DC area compared to my old Kentucky home.

Anyway, a beer or two with dinner certainly doesn't approach causing a state of drunkenness; likewise, social drinking |= drinking to get drunk. Many forms of alcohol just taste nice.

Ben, don't speak to what you don't know, foo! I bet you're planning on not having sex until you're married, too. Which is probably better for all of us.

"I think alcohol is poison. It makes people retarded."

- J.E. Sawyer

Binge drinking is like pornography - you know it when you see it. The "three drinks per session" rule is pretty arbitrary - I can drink five beers over four hours and be fine. Likewise, my 18x-pound self can drink three beers within an hour and experience a level of intoxication that my 105-pound girlfriend gets when she drinks one beer in one hour.

I think it has less to do with absolute amounts, and much more to do with motivation. Obviously, drinking to obliterate your mind is not a good thing - unless you're trying to access the secret art of drunken-style kungfu. But that really goes without saying.

Is it for a church trip? You can usually appeal to members to help support in that circumstance. Alternately, you could hold a something"-a-thon" event, e.g., for every hour of community service you do, so-and-so would donate $5 to your trip.

Car washes can be profitable. You could also sell a lot of your stuff that you don't use - you'd be surprised how liberating that can feel, and you may as well make money off of it. Heck, help your family hold a yard sale, and ask your folks if the proceeds can go toward your trip - they might be willing.

EDIT: Where have you tried getting hired? Have you asked your folks if they have friends who might be willing to hire you on?

1. Mowing lawns (though it is fall now, so this option may be limited)

2. Shovel snow.

3. Babysit

4. Under-the-table job. Small local businesses will often hire you to work off the record. Because you're under the legal working age, they don't have to pay you minimum wage, but it is a way to get started.

5. Presumably you'll turn 16 this year. When you do, get a real job. Note that you may not be able to get the exact job that you want, but... (and this will sound unsavory) places like McDonalds are willing to hire younger folk on and if you work hard, will actually treat you well. I have a friend who was an assistant manager by his senior year of high school.

Reselling things on e-bay. A lot of large chain electronics stores will from time to time have outrageous deals on Xbox, PS 2, and Gamecube games. You could purchase these at very discounted rates, and then sell them on e-bay for a bit more and make a hansome profit. I have a friend who does this and he makes around $400-$500 on it a month in his spare time. This would require some initial investment on your part, though, as well as transportation and some savvy.

Tim Tams do indeed reign supreme in the cookie/biscuit world. You can ship them by the case to the US, but as far as I know, they aren't regularly available. I'll never forget my first Tim Tam Slam - delicious!

In terms of all desserts the world over, I'd have to go with genuine Italian gelatti - probably the most heavenly substance I've ever consumed, created by a people who know about eating well.

I'm just amazed that England had the Guinea at all, if it was only worth a schilling more than a pound sterling. Wacky. You'd figure the Guinea wouldn't have lasted long.

Only if you're importing from the US, or purchasing US goods from vendors who decide to pass the savings due to the relatively recent weakening of the dollar. Or touring in the US. I'm pretty certain though that you're not.

It's also assuming that those US prices haven't increased to compensate for the devaluation, which happens eventually. No one is stupid when it comes to pricing, and currency value fluctuations, especially among currencies as influential as the US dollar, are more than predictable enough to adjust easily.

A litre of water is one kilogram. Your point?

Realized that after I wrote it - my bad. As for the mole, I'm about 10 years out of high school chemistry, so it's a little fuzzy. :)

Ben, I believe they're actually English units of measurement. Your ignorance continues to astound me, and I hope you're hunted down by a clockwork Nazi someday.

Two comments:

1.) Both systems are pretty silly when taking time into consideration

2.) The English system basis for comparing weight and volume seems much cooler to me. I like that a pint of water is one pound. When I was cutting weight for crew in college, it was an easy way to keep track of how much I was taking in. Metric volumes just seem a bit stodgy in comparison.

Oh, also - whoever created the mole as a basis for measuring molecules should be shot. 6.02*10^23 - where'd he pull that from?

I guess what I meant to say was that if you don't know specifically what you want to do after college, my advice would be to get a degree in something that will pay well after you graduate. I live in the Washington, DC area, where tech, engineering, and economics job opportunities abound, and opportunities for Classics degree holders are scarce. Although I can leverage my liberal arts degree to some extent, if my degree had instead been in comp. sci. or economics, I'd have much less of a problem finding a well-paying job.

This may be a bit trickier in the UK, where I understand that students enrolling in universities specialize exclusively in one or two areas of study.

Don't get me wrong - I don't believe that money is everything, but there's something to be said for having the peace of mind brought about by being able to save as well afford the things I want, whether Spiderweb games, CDs, or a new car. :)

IM in General

I was a bit tongue-in-cheek with my remark, to be certain, but I would say that mobiles have made several aspects of life much easier, including finding people when you're out, getting help when you're lost, and getting help during an emergency. Also, there's the fact that you can take your mobile (number and all) with you when you move, saving the trouble of setting up a new service or informing everyone of your new contact information. And you can ignore calls as easily as IMs, thanks to caller ID.

Things I don't like: mobiles ringing during movies/restaurants/wherever, flakiness through plans constantly being made at the last minute ("I'll just give them a call, they won't mind..."), sometimes shoddy connections, diminished battery life.

Still, it seems a pretty good thing, to me. If I recollect correctly, prepay phones in the UK don't even charge minutes for incoming calls (which is not the case in the US), which would really make your pound go far, I imagine.

Stabbing one's self in the face is not conducive to living.

I personally don't dig IM - it is an indirect method of communication at best, and distracts from accomplishing anything else while it's on, due to the interruptions. Viva la cellphone.

The Kentucky state fair in Louisville, KY rules. Everyone comes out of the woodwork (and the hills) for it, and it's the only place you can go where you can ride a rollercoaster, watch a pipe-smoking contest, behold the winner of an ugliest lamp contest, and then have your eardrums burst in a stadium concert performed by Grand Funk Railroad, all in the same day, at least as far as I know.

You know, I used to feel the same way about a lack of direction, but the "real world" quickly showed me the error of my ways. Suffice it to say, if I had let my lack of direction wander down the path of comp. sci. instead of classics, I'd be standing in much nicer shoes, financially speaking.

Not that money is everything - it's not. But not having enough to do things like purchase a respectable engagement ring is a bit bothersome.
