The pigeon has finally taken wing. It was kind of fun to watch him make his first few small flights, but I'm glad he's gone. Anyone know a good way to remove bird crap from concrete? Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series (source material for the movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World"). I'm on book nineteen of twenty right now, and still loving them. Worth going to the library for, though - they're pricey! EDIT: "Les Mis" is my favorite book ever. EDIT 2: Another interesting, quick read is "War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells. It's very dated, but in many ways quite prescient, and its lesson is timeless. I thought "soft drink" was used to distinguish those beverages from alcoholic drinks, or "hard drinks." Maybe I"m way off base here. I've always said "soda pop," and have always been considered odd for doing so. At home in Kentucky, at least in the city, most people say "soda." Also, I love soda water. I acquired a taste for it while studying abroad in Italy, and now drink it pretty regularly here in the states. Call me crazy - I just like the bubbles! quote:Maybe not in Canada. I agree, it makes no sense, but there are different safety standards for cars and motorcycles, just as there are different gas mileage standards for cars and trucks. To the DoT, it's apples and oranges, even against all reason. This is likely due to special interests, whether SUV manufacturers or Harley-Davidson owners. I was in Madison the day the state house was going to vote on banning riding a motorcycle without a helmet, and the sheer number of guys on Harleys circling the state capitol building in protest was impressive, though their motivation IMO was pretty wrong-headed. I tend to buy most of the music I want, just because many of the mp3s out there aren't necessarily well-ripped. Also, I'm a big nerd who likes to have all the album information accurately filled out in my iTunes library. I will on occasion rip a friend's album if it's something that I like, though I'm more than willing to reciprocate. My current list: Radiohead The Roots Tribe Called Quest Billy Idol Joe Welch and the Aurelians The Shins Green Day The Articles Bjork Bumpus The Cure G. Love & Special Sauce Frente! Manu Chao Nickel Creek The Strokes Yerba Buena Taking a break from U2 right now. I also have been listening a lot to the classical pieces on the "Master and Commander" soundtrack, mainly because I've been hammering through the book series - 17 down, 3 to go! Anyone who has ever hit a deer will contest the merits of hitting it as opposed to veering out of the way. As for Smart cars, the European version isn't street legal for the US, but they're currently in the process of introducing a version to the US that is. People in my town and California may buy them, but I'm not sure that it'll sell very well elsewhere. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

Recent findings suggest that hydrogen sulfide may also be used to slow the body's processes with no or minimal decomposition. I found an article on the topic on the BBC here. This has the benefit of avoiding the "what do we do to get them to thaw without dying?" problem. "Vanilla Sky" had a pretty interesting take on the "during the sleep" part of this topic. Usually, though, suspended animation is used in liturature more as a vehicle for exploring the future in whatever utopian/dystopian form it takes. What's your agenda? I think that encumbrance, while perhaps realistic, ultimately takes away from the fun factor in games. While I think that JV has struck a good balance between reality and fun in BoA, I think he missed the mark in Geneforge 3. Most frustrating is that characters with lower strengths become unable to do anything if they are even moderately encumbered. In BoA, at least you can carry out an action if you have even one AP. That Geneforge isn't structured similarly is beyond frustrating, especially since any number of the enormous humanoid creations you control (not to mention your NPCs) can't carry anything you find. I don't think that changing this would be all that game breaking - at most, it would give shapers a chance to act at all. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

I wonder how much of all that sperm is even used at those sperm banks anyway. Outside of the top ten supermen (who likely only vary for preferences of race or hair color), there'd be little to no demand out there for anyone else. I reckon it must be the case that some guys out there have "fathered" far more children than they'd ever know about. As for testing, I think it's a good idea for everyone who's at all "active" - though the chlamydia and gonorrhea test is a bit brutal. Nevertheless, it's worth it to know. Hey, I'll stick up for Greenday! It's way overplayed, but "American Idiot" in its entirety plays quite well all the way through, which can't be said for most albums these days. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

At my university, which operated on three terms (quarters, trimesters, what have you), finals could go into the first week of June. I graduated on June 11th. This sucked, because everyone getting out earlier had better dibs on internships. Of course, we didn't have to go back to school until late September. What is the motivation for donating sperm in the first place? I understand there may be some monetary compensation, but it can't be that much, and certainly not enough for me to risk having a child I would have inadvertantly "fathered" running around. For that matter, aren't sperm banks pretty selective regarding everyone as is? Their clients would certainly have an interest in receiving product from muscle-bound, high-metabolismed, genius Adonises. Most of us on these boards, for example, likely wouldn't pass muster. :) I looked at the reg, and there are tons of other qualifiers, so I don't think it's entirely built to "stick it to the gays" - the rule doesn't mention this qualifier for discrimination, the draft guidance document does, which doesn't have the force of law. Unsurprisingly, the proposed rule for these regs was published back in 1997, while the draft guidance was published in 2004.
