My signature isn't trademarked and I certainly don't reserve all rights to my posts. It's a patent on the ever-changing signature.

I just call the 'sodas' soft drink or, most usually, their name (i.e coke, pepsi, lift etc.)

Incidentally, over here Sprite can be referred to as "lemonade". I've heard that this surprises many people.

I think the term 'lemonade' is thrown around a lot in Australia. Sprite is called that, and you can also get the cheap brand swith the label Lemonade in 2 litre bottles for a dollar at some shops. In my area though, we don't really do the American cartoon thing and sell it at Lemonade stands out the front of our house for a nikel.

Yeah, here Sprite and such are called lemonade. I feel sorry for all of the people who have never tasted real lemonade. Most New Zealanders haven't.

Here Sprite and 7-Up are referred to by name, but store brands are often labeled “lemon-lime soda”.

The brand “Crush” and all it's store brand knockoffs are “Orange Soda”.

I guess that's why I have always called it soda, I've seen things labeled that a lot.

Juice is a soft drink, milk is not. Generally, over here soft drinks are anything that is not milk, water, or alcoholic. (Oppose hard drinks, which are alcoholic. Used to oppose 'hot drinks', but that's a Victorian usage and survives only in a certain religion's scripture and a few obscure mixers.)

'Soft drink' is also used by default to describe beverages which have no natural cause, such as McDonalds's orange drink and Kool-Aid. However, the more common term for that is either just 'drinks' or 'beverages', or just whatever it is. (It's unusual to have to categorize orange drink and Kool-Aid at the same time, but my gut tells me 'drinks', perhaps 'powder drinks' if I wanted to be specific.)

The Israeli usage of referring to powder drink flavors by color - i.e. 'purple-flavored' - is noteworthy and ought, by rights, be spread to at least some dialect of English.

Ice cream soda can have any fizzy drink in it...
I believe we call those "spiders".
Floats here. 'To float X' refers to the process of throwing vanilla ice cream into a carbonated beverage, and 'an X float' is X with vanilla ice cream in it. More exotic ice creams are unusual and I've never heard them used verbally, so I wouldn't know how to express, say, strawberry and Sprite (that is, except with 'vile').

Fun fact: Mountain Dew is an acceptable substitute for orange juice in just about everything that calls for the latter.

Has anyone ever played the SEGA Genesis game called Cool Spot? It has a sequel called Spot Goes To Hollywood, I believe, although I have never seen that one. The main character of the games is the red circle on the 7-Up bottle. You wouldn't thing a game made as an advertisement for a soft drink would be any good, but it's actually pretty good, as far as platformers go.

I had a float that had sprite as the liquid before, although the ice cream was vanilla. Suprisingly, it actually tasted good.

"Reconstituted drinks" would be the most technically correct term, I suppose.

Hmmm, that's weird, but we still refer to "Orange soda" as orange soda and not orange pop, since someone mentioned it. However, getting some orange soda is still getting a pop.

There's always an exception to everything, it seems.

If TM (in his next moniker) would be a soft drink: Which one he would choose?
- Afri-Cola
- Dr. Peppers
- Fassbrause
- Root Beer
- Schweppes
- 7Up

I'd like to see him as Dr. Peppers ^_^
