Um, no. A documentary shows you what the director wants you to see. Fortunately for Michael Moore, many of his clips speak for themselves. Unfortunately for the nation, many voting citizens were too busy drinking the kool-aid to pay attention.

There's also the unspoken threat from us on toward the rest of the world every day. Ask anyone from any other country whom they're more afraid of, the US or Al Qaeda, and they'll tell you the US.

Hey, I think that the pigeon appearance was a perfectly valid tangent from BSC's post on page one. And, after all, haven't we all learned a thing or two in the meantime? I also brought us back on topic with the results from my google search for RW, so it hasn't drifted that badly, though admittedly, the turn toward guano has been a misstep.

I say we continue to love and nourish this topic as it deserves. :)

I wish there was a little bit more honesty on this. The reason which we went to war with Saddam was 1) He was a genocidal maniac. 2) He threatened his neighbors with invasion. 3) He attempted in the invasion of Kuwait to open an overland route to export oil which could not be blocked by UN sanctions, or directed by OPEC. 4) He threatened the United States oil supply by burning oil wells and threatening neighboring countries in how they supplied oil through OPEC.
These are all justifications for the first war, not the current one.

quote:
5) He probably had used poison gas and other things on his own people. Even if he didn't use WMDs on his people, he killed them in droves.
Not a strictly illegal, let alone intervenable offense. The world's treatment of the Sudanese genocide is answer enough for you on this one.

quote:
6) He may have had WMD-- this was not proven. I think if he had any, he exported all of his WMDs to Syria a couple years earlier.
There is no proof of either of these claims.

7) He attacked the United States ally Israel.
So have lots of countries, and Israel has attacked them in turn. No one has clean hands here.

quote:
8) He harbored terrorists-- not Al Qaeda terrorists but Palestinian terrorists. This is proven.
And were they a threat to our national security? I have yet to hear of any credible Palestinian threats on the U.S. Does that make this justification for war on Iraq?

quote:
9) The Kurdish problem became unmanageable after the gulf war and his neighbors needed a way to manage them. 10) He prompted increasing weapons research and military expenditures by Iran.
These also are not good justifications for a "just" war. We and our allies develop new weapons systems all the time.

The more I think about it, the more I arrive at a perceived need to try to reshape Middle Eastern government and culture in an image more to our liking as the justification for the war. Good old imperialistic nation-building. While the motivation behind this may have been good, if wrong-headed, the justifications used to sell the war are completely disingenuous, and it's in no way a "just" war. The way that the war has been executed is another story entirely, and likely a criminal one at that.

I am Andrew Miller. I am an American, a Kentuckian, a non-smoker, a registered Democrat, a fiscal moderate, a social liberal, an agnostic, and a hasher. I am 27, 5'11, 18X lbs. (it fluctuates, but I try to keep it toward the lower end. One of these days, I'll make it back down to the sweet 170's...). I have a B.A. in Classical Languages and an M.A. in International Relations and Economics. I live in Arlington, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, DC. I was originally drawn to the area by career opportunities, but stayed for Diane, (now) my fiancee, whom I'm marrying July 31st. I am a legal assistant, but will be starting at G.W. Law School in August.

I row when I can get on the water, and regularly run in the meantime in order to stay in shape and combat an ever slowing metabolism. I run 10ks (my PR so far is 48:59, and I'm working to get faster) and I'm looking forward to running my first marathon next year. I am a closet gamer. I remember what the gold box games were, as well as Basic Dungeons & Dragons. I'm a singer, and have competed in international barbershop quartet competitions. I'm currently a bit down because I finally finished Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series, and no other books seem as good to me now.

I've never taken an IQ test. I do my best to listen. I appreciate Socrates' attitude. I'm willing to believe Thuryl.

Whoo-ey! It's getting kinda thick in here. The misinformation being thrown around is breathtaking.

Let's focus though on a few facts:

-Saddam did not have any WMDs. The UN inspectors pretty much verified this, and wanted more time to be certain.

-Terrorist connections with Saddam's regime were spurious.

-Montana is a coal producing state.

...so what flavor was the kool-aid, anyway?

Best console game of all time ever though? Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for N64.

Thanks. Probably a stultifyingly easy answer to find, but I haven't started digging into the docs yet because I haven't been inspired. Until now, that is... :)

A coding question: would it be possible to set up a flag to change the location where the one exit of a town designed as a ship would exit to?

Example: Say you have a ship/town, as such, where C is the captain and X is the exit (0 is the mast)...

+-----------------\
|===========\
|=C==0=======>
|===========/
+-----|X|---------/

Could you set it up such that the destination of the exit square entirely depends on a flag change due to a diolog choice with the captain on the ship? Thanks!

EDIT: I hate quasi-ASCII!!!

No, I meant that people with sense don't support Bush, so in essence or a sense, I was supporting the other camp. Savvy?

Spidweb is essentially a company of one. Jeff does all the coding himself. As such, he doesn't have the resources necessary to dedicate to such an endeavor, were he ever to desire to, which he doesn't.

Nitrates can serve as explosives as well as fertilizers, ergo the "fertilizer bomb," which Tim McVeigh used in Oklahoma City. It's another area where Homeland Security is failing, though in their defense, fertilizer sales would be almost impossible to regulate.

EDIT: I'm not sure how sodium nitrite is different, but I'm pretty sure it acts as a preservative in Spam. Most processed meats use it though (especially hotdogs).

Words are like tools: sometimes you only need a tack hammer; other occasions call for the sledge. As everyone knows, things always go smoothest when you have the right tool for the job, so why handicap yourself?

TM - even though it's topical, maybe we ought refrain from using such language for JV's sake - this is his commercial site after all.

MLK Jr. also was quite charismatic. Other great non-20th century examples are Pericles and Alcibiades, for different reasons, and with different results.

EDIT: I wonder when the next great orator will arrive? Maybe it isn't possible anymore in this world of soundbites.
