Jealous? Good grief, no.

And 'offended' is probably not the right word either. More like 'irritated and annoyed'.

Imagine a guy who pulls his pants down and waves his old fellow around like no one's business and yells "Hey look at me!". Now, I've seen penises before. I have a penis. It's not like I'm going to cover my eyes and scream. But I really would prefer not to see some guy waving his sausage around. It's impolite, it's distracting and it's certainly not conductive to rational discussion.

In short, yes, I would genuinely appreciate it if you put your salami away.

I find a refusal to even respond to me disingenious; I gave you the courtesy of a point-by-point battery, concrete examples, a thought experiment, direct responses, and appeals to a mutual theology.

I would understand if you conceded the point - that there is no actual religious basis for not swearing, and attempting to suppress swearing is an inherently negative activity - but I find just ignoring me insulting and I certainly didn't do it to you, even if I understood that "whatever I had to say you wouldn't believe it anyway".

Of course, you can ignore me. Or I can encourage everyone to add the classic quote in which you directly state swearing causes brain damage to their signatures, the better to ridicule you for doing so. Either which way...?

Words are like tools: sometimes you only need a tack hammer; other occasions call for the sledge. As everyone knows, things always go smoothest when you have the right tool for the job, so why handicap yourself?

TM - even though it's topical, maybe we ought refrain from using such language for JV's sake - this is his commercial site after all.

Re music: opera is the way to go.

Re cussing: I never used to swear when I was at school, because my parents didn't ever swear, nor their friends, so I thought it was not "grown-up" to swear. Then I went to university and - let's face it - students swear a lot, but I thought they were pretty immature too and proper adults wouldn't swear as much.

Finally, I now have a job working exclusively in an adult environment - in a professional office in the government sector, not on a building site or anything - and I find everybody swears just as much here as they ever did in school. So it has ceased to bother me now and I've started doing it too.

Basically guys, society has moved on. Unless you live in a monastery or convent, I think you're going to find this sort of language is pretty common currency.

I'd also like to point out that I've never heard any swear word that I didn't already hear when I was in primary school (i.e. aged under 11). That includes the allegedly sexist c-word. So much for the innocence of kids.

Context matters. When I was doing infantry officer training once, an instructor came into a room, took in its substandard condition at a glance, and made a declaration in which fully half of the words were essentially the same four-letter word, modified into two different nouns, an adjective, and a verb. The remaining words were mostly prepositions.

In that setting, that was effective communication.
This is a different setting, and I share Ash Lael's sentiments. All this gratuitous crudity is about as novel and impressive as picking your nose in public. Defending it is absurd: the fact that there is nothing wrong with it in absolute terms doesn't change the only relevant fact, which is that this is not the place for it.

I'd like to extend this point...

(Honestly. What if it's inappropriate to you? It's speech. We deal with much greater annoyances and get by just fine.)

In this particular case I'd like to point out that Jeff Vogel, who rules by right of owning these boards, has created a Code of Conduct that forbids profanity. You don't have to agree, but you do have to refrain, even in a topic concerning that very matter.

Yes, TM, that means you. And everyone else.

The absolute degree of annoyance to me (if such a concept is even viable) is not the point; it's the pain relative to the gain. If it would save someone else's life, or even have a decent chance of doing so, I'd give away a lobe of my liver. But it is not right that many should have to endure even the slight annoyance of having to blink and skip on in our reading, to no better end than allowing a few people to indulge themselves in a slight pleasure.

Furthermore, the code of conduct leads most of us to believe that the only obscenity we will have to put up with will be the few odd posts of promptly banned offenders. Of course that misrepresentation issue is not an argument for people whose posting habits I'd like to change; it's a matter for the moderators and administrators, who should either enforce the code of conduct more strictly, or change it to represent accurately the conduct that will be accepted.

Now I knew the Bible wasn't completely silent on the subject... These examples are not umbrella's for cussing but they cite specifics.

Exodus 20:7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

Leviticus 22:32 "Do not profane my holy name. I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites. I am the LORD, who makes you holy"

Exodus 21:17 "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death."

Matthew 15:4 "For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'"

Matthew 5:44 "But I tell you: Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you"

Romans 12:14 "Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse."

Exodus 22:28 "Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people."

Proverbs 13:3 "He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin."

Psalm 15:1-3
1"LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary?
Who may live on your holy hill?

2 He whose walk is blameless
and who does what is righteous,
who speaks the truth from his heart

3 and has no slander on his tongue,
who does his neighbor no wrong
and casts no slur on his fellowman,"

Now, these passages are more about connotation then about the actual words a person uses. So it has to be taken into consideration what Alex has said about what one means when one is speaking. So saying 'ef you, go to hell' is biblically wrong but telling your wife 'You're effen beautiful' would not be. It's not the words per/se it's what you mean by them. There is also the fact that one can curse without using cuss words.

In the case of ben I would like to refer to Romans 14. If we who are Christians think cuss words in themselves are not sin, but our brother in Christ does, in order to lift him up we refrain from cussing or condemning him for his belief.

I myself choose not to cuss because I consider it obscene, offensive, and unneccessary. Not to forget the influences of my upbringing. Because they do carry such offensive connotations in my own mind, the following verses lead me to believe that it's something I shouldn't do.

Hebrews 12:14 Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

2 Peter 3:14 ... make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.

...that has nothing to do with cussing. "May thine insides shrivel as the prunes in winter, and that your genitalia invert before sunset" is a pretty bad curse, but no "curse words" per say.

Didn't you read the 'I'm not done' sign? I hadn't finished my thought. Now I have and I included the same realization before reading yours.

I agree. I'd just like to say that it might sound better just to say, "You're very beautiful." You know what I mean?

What is the PBJ song on TV for? (I'm a big fan)

Oh, here's a question:
The Pepper vs Banana is split into thirds, what is the last third from?

EDIT: Ok, I found it's: "I'm Horny" by Mousse-T. I can't find anywhere to download it.

What is fyt?
