I would say that Baldur's Gate would fit as a truly innovative game, as well as Darklands before it. Also, the original Castle Wolfenstein, for different reasons.

That pork barrel spending exists refutes your supposition, Ash. Why would they do it if there's no benefit?

Pork barrel spending makes a substantive difference come election time. For a real life example, there is Anne Northup, Republican representative of the district incorporating my home town, Louisville, KY. Northup, despite the fact that Louisville is a bright spot of blue in a sea of red, nevertheless has consistently been reelected, largely on her record of securing federal funds for local projects, like highways, bridges, and other infrastructure. Given that most opponents can't say that they've accomplished this in their ads, it gives Northup a real leg up, even if she's against her own rights as a woman and a Bush administration sycophant. As another example, Senator Byrd, democrat of West Virginia, an incredibly conservative, Republican state, has consistently been re-elected since forever, largely because of the enormous amounts of federal funding he's appropriated for his state. Go there, and you'll see that there are even highways named for him. It makes a difference.

Say what you will about the Romans, Alec, but the truth is they were ridiculously advanced for the technology available at the time. Four words: concrete and indoor plumbing. I invite you to go to Rome and learn about it before so casually dismissing that particular culture's achievements in an effort to ride Kelandon.

Last thing you ate: Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter Cup ice cream, directly from the carton
What you are wearing right now: Plaid pajama pants, white Gap tee-shirt
What room you are in: Living room of a large one bedroom condo, decorated decidedly in tastes other than my own, siting on the couch, looking toward a wall of windows and the porch.

Yep, it's a Pigouian moment for many vital areas of American interest - defense contracting, disaster recovery, healthcare, and energy. The market left to its own devices clearly won't make the best choices for society. Intelligent regulatory solutions are needed to address these issues, but unfortunately, I believe we're unlikely to see them during this Republican nadir.

But hey - as long as they say they have Jesus in their hearts, want to persecute the gays, and take away women's rights, let's keep voting them in!

Yay! It's been so long since one of these melees has occurred. :) Just to cover all the traditional bases first:

Ash and Ben, both of you are wrong.

With that out of the way, I would posit that the conservative noise right now is just that - noise. This is because conservatives are losers - in the economic sense. Because their values are endangered, they have more incentive than the majority to act and assert themselves. The reality is that most Americans don't care one way or another what conservative cretins think, provided that the stink doesn't affect their lives. Note that anytime any conservative policy comes close to touching anything that regular Americans actually value deeply, they get struck down. Consider the reaction to the Terri Schiavo deal-io. You may point to all the proposed gay marriage bans going into effect as evidence, but States have historically reacted similarly toward comparable circumstances (e.g. slavery, civil rights). The sea change is toward secularism.

To be fair, the travesty that is the U.S. executive branch currently doesn't really qualify as truly conservative - their opportunistic actions, lack of compassion, and flagrant incompetence defy any true mores. That conservative crazies would continue to support it boggles the mind.

It's probably too late for you to change your grades, so hopefully they're good. You can always get exam prep for SAT, ACT, etc., if you aren't a good tester(Kel would be the expert on this, though). Good scores can help make up for a lacking GPA.

Otherwise, I would just advise you to go to the highest ranked school that you get into in a climate you can tolerate for four years. Seeing as you're from Minnesota though, I can't imagine the latter will be a problem for you! :)

Well, I've been gone for a while. It's amazing what no longer being trapped at a desk in the working world can do to post accumulation - knocks it right off the charts! Which is to say, law school is hard, and being in much greater control of my time now, I can enjoy things away from the computer to a much greater degree.

Y'all still rock, however - at least, most of you do.
