Yeah, you'd think that with a primarily agricultural economy there'd be some harvest-time style holidays. Although, that wouldn't mean much to an adventurer, I suppose.

Yeah, that was difficult at first. The special attacks make it downright unfair, and my first attempt found my party standing right next to it when it came to life. I got slaughtered before I could properly start attacking.

The next time, I just shielded & hasted my mage, sent him in, let him summon Baldev twice or so (aside: AP-increasing items are so unreliable), and then ran back out of its range. It helps that the non-standard spells take 0 AP to use...

Groan... I think I need to shorten mine for the contest... though as long as I can make the story work, it'll be awesome.

I may not have time to fully test it (I shudder at the thought).

Try Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. It's perfect for a good mix of fantasy (not the perverted kind, as Experience Unlimited noted) and satire on... everything. Start with The Color of Magic. It's really good stuff, just not if you're looking for a serious, heavy read.

And Ray Bradbury. Can't forget him... excellent short stories.

Undead Horde Substitutes in Blades of Avernum

Of course a new enemy doesn't automatically make a scenario good! That should be obvious!

I only meant to say that undead hordes are the most-overused cliche in all of adventure gaming, and that people can't just have a scenario which says "Here's some zombies, go at it."

First one, probably not.

Second one, a very good idea. I wish I could change my scenario to fit that, but I'm too far in... lizards all the way!

Okay, I for one am sick of undead in scenarios (it doesn't help that I'm testing Undead Valley), and in general. I was just curious, what does everyone here think of as an appropriate substitute?

Post if it isn't in the poll.

Very true... Jeff did a good job of getting those little details in. Truly enriches the gameplay, and helps you forget the little annoying bits.

Undead Valley BEING TESTED in Blades of Avernum

Too many undead, very true... that's why in my scenario ('tis on the back burner, probably won't be in time for the contest), there will be virtually no undead, and definitely none of the rotting flesh kind. Shades, if anything.

It's an interesting challenge to find a substitute for undead... I'm using lizards, and anything that uses lots of fire (I will avoid Ruby Skeletons).

Ouch... it hurts... testing this gave me a bit of a headache. However, I submitted my report.

I hope some of the things I addressed were fixed in 9.1, because I'm not sure I can force myself to play it through again.

EDIT: Take no offence at my remarks... I just hate undead (see signature).

It's probably due in part to the overwhelming number of people who still can't cope with the idea of gay people even existing. Some people probably still think it can be inherited.

Actually, I'm curious about the Anama's presence in Valorim pre-Empire. I wonder how much of a hand they had in things...

Hm... Khoth's palace? I thought you could just wait for the beams to shut off, then run for it (doing this in combat mode works perfectly).

In fact, I can't think of anything you'd need to blow up, except maybe the generators (which you can just run past) or the efreet (which a mildly skilled, blessed archer can take down easily).

Combat in Canopy Poll in Blades of Avernum

Hm... biggest issue with the Canopy system: way the heck too many boss battles and cutscenes! To add to that, some of the bosses were vulnerable only to non-player spells that I'd somehow not found.

A few boss abilities were just unfair to my roughly level 40 party (a bit overpowered), to the point where I just had to run up, summon Baldev, and run away again.

And one quirk that just doesn' seem quite right (and I'm not sure if this was fixed after I downloaded it), is that the non-player spells don't use up your AP!

Pardon my rant.

Well, don't forget about the Keep of Tinraya area, that's got a few cities in it. Still, the distribution is a bit weird there... particularly when you consider the isle of Bigail.

Could just be a matter of indigenous people who had already settled the southern coasts before the Empire arrived...

Well, it's hard to get compelling characters when you've got to keep moving through a deserted corridor of Avernum.

EDIT: And you can't say that Morog and the imps of Morogville weren't interesting.

Hey, what about ZKR? It's not even on there, and it was probably the best! Plenty of options, an interesting (albeit overly-long) time limit, and an intriguing look back into post-A3 Avernum... what's not to like?

For non-Jeff-created scenarios, I'd have to say APF. Very good plot, interesting (though occasionally annoying) creatures, nice landscape, and not too much preaching.

I would've said Bahs... but it was freakishly long (it got tiresome once I got to the golems), and it ended right when it was getting interesting again. Good design aside, I hate undead. I really, really, really hate undead. With a passion.

In fact, all the creature cliches (i.e.: golems, demons) are starting to wear on my nerves. I'm just glad that slimes have made very minimal appearances, and that any goblins in scenarios have been oddly powerful.

The Alien Blade is in A2, A3, and BoA. I can't remember where in BoA, but it's there.

Personally, I loved the Jade Halberd when it was still good (in A2, when it dripped acid). Also, the Miracle items from Backwater Calls are very nice...

Of course, Alderague and Maximilian are just absurd, and Morog's Scepter finally gives mages something to do without needing SP.

EDIT: Yeah, I meant Canopy when referring to the Miracle items. Sorry, I remember playing them both within a day of each other, and it all got a bit blurred after playing through the epic that is Bahssikava...

science, philosophy or religion? in General
Law Bringer

Science and religion are completely different... with religion (or most of them, anyway) there's usually that sense of "if we pray hard enough, things will change" or "someone is watching over us". With science, it's more of "we create our own destinies" and "if we understand how this works, then we can change it".

Of course, too much of either is just asking for a good dose of karma.

Best plot: A2. It all flowed together quite nicely, and the weapons were never made obscenely powerful (nor were they downgraded... *cough* Jade halberd *cough*).

Biggest: A3. Takes a while to finish... though it does have a bit more replay value than A2, and the branching missions can be nice.

I think they're both great. I think I enjoyed A2 more, though... particularly since A3 doesn't let you do anything else after winning.
