I just re-read the Lone Wolf books. They were my original introduction to fantasy literature at about age 5, and they're now free online at Project Aon. Freakin' awesome. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! I suppose it may be some measure of what I think of the quality of Jeff's recent output that I'm waiting until I graduate in May to start in on some of the last few games. I'm a year or two behind on Spidweb works, because school and work have been so time-consuming that I've feared the addiction that comes from playing anything Jeff has made. So congratulations indeed, although I won't know what I'm congratulating you on until at least three months from now. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. As much as Johnson is criticized for the Vietnam War, there are two mitigating factors that he has that Bush doesn't: he wasn't the only president involved in getting us into Vietnam or keeping us there (Kennedy, Eisenhower, and even Truman got us into it, and Nixon continued the war effort after Johnson), and he also had some really great domestic legislation, particularly early in his term (Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, etc.). -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Uh, actually, Jeff has said that he's likely to license someone else's engine for his next universe. Not a shooter engine, because what the heck does that have to do with what Spidweb has made thus far? But someone else's engine, nonetheless. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! quote:Your "second example," i.e., "then I pose the dilemma (as does Mr. Thuryl) of the two foes who request that you assist them in fighting the other"? I can't find the antecedent to this statement in this topic, so I can't say for sure what you're talking about, but the GR doesn't imply that you must enslave yourself to the whims of others. If you're in a situation of helping one person to the disadvantage of another or helping the second to the disadvantage of the first, then a reasonable application of the GR is that it prohibits helping either one, since by doing so you would be doing to the other something that you wouldn't want done to yourself. I've heard it stated that you can derive basically all the rest of morality from the GR (and some common sense), but I've never attempted to do it until now. It may indeed be possible. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Diprosopus: I think you're being excessively physical with your interpretation of the word "do." Your sadist who cannot feel pain still shouldn't harm other by the GR, because the physical action of cutting (or whatever) is only one component of the action. Another component of the action is causing harm. While this person might not mind being cut in exactly the same fashion as he would cut someone else, he would mind harm, whether that harm came in the form of physical pain or whatever. To take Excalibur's example and run with it: I might give my mother a country album even though I would never want her to perform exactly the same physical action (giving me a country album) in return. I would nevertheless be obeying the GR, because I would be giving her something that she would want (she likes country), which is something that I would want her to do to me as well. One needs to examine not merely the physical action being performed but all of the ramifications of the action in order to analyze it under the GR. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. quote:As is my annoying habit, I just looked this up in Greek, and this would be my translation: "Do not judge, in order that you not be judged; because with the judgment you judge, you will be judged." Because of the way the Greek works, this happens in (arguably) eleven words, five of which are the same word for "judging." It's really pounding the word, which also has the resonances of accusing and bringing to trial, and of condemning. This has nothing to do with anything, but I found it interesting. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Given that the title says "iMac," I doubt it's a Vista problem. When my sound goes wrong for some reason, I open up GarageBand, let it initialize, and then close it, and that almost always fixes the problem. It might even help here, too. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! quote:Remember Le Pen in the French elections in 2002? Wacko candidates get popularity from time to time; hence Ron Paul. The analogy doesn't go very far, of course, but it's instructive to think of the unpredictability anyway. Remember that people vote stupidly often, and people vote surprisingly occasionally, so people vote surprisingly stupidly with distressing regularity. As a more direct answer to your question, his support is young and Internet-based. Why, I have no idea. But that's who it is. Anyway, I cast an Obama vote on Tuesday, but I have to admit that I didn't make up my mind until a few minutes before I completed the line on my absentee ballot. I looked at Clinton's positions and compared them with Obama's, and they're really similar. I looked at Clinton's answers to SF Chronicle readers' questions and compared them to Obama's, and they were both good. I looked over their websites, listened to some of their speeches, looking for something that would make up my mind, and I found nothing. I finally broke for Obama because I counted on the stupidity of the American people. Too many people dislike Clinton (for no apparent reason — if you ask them why, they can't explain it in any reasonable terms). In Clinton vs. McCain, I think McCain will win (unless she figures out his weak spot, the war), but in Obama vs. McCain, I think Obama wins. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. The problem with the Saddam-Al Qaeda connection is that it doesn't even make sense if you know the first thing about the status of the Middle East. Saddam was a secular dictator, not like the theocrats in Iran. Al Qaeda is a religious extremist group attempting to create religious government in all predominantly Islamic countries. If Al Qaeda had its way, Saddam Hussein would have been overthrown, and he knew it. So it would not have made much sense for him to help them. If they had any sort of collusion, it was limited and uncomfortable, not close and continuous. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
