For whatever reason, UBB will accept Unicode only if you actually code it. You need to input ampersand-pound-x-Unicode number in order to display a Unicode character. Quote my post to see what I mean.

If you did it for GF, it works much the same way in A4. The graphics are in Avernum 4 Files, and the one you want is called "Avernum 4 PC Graphics."

If you min-max really skillfully in A1, you end up with an absurdly easy game. A1 expects you to be somewhat incompetent with your skill choices.

Virtually any party setup will work in A1, but the one that I like is pure melee fighter, melee fighter/archer/lock-picker, mage/priest (who eventually picks up some combat skills, too), pure mage/priest.

On the mage/priest characters, I raise their Priest Spells and Mage Spells exclusively for a while to get them up to 18 so that they can cast Divine Warrior and Arcane Shield. Once you've got those, you're pretty much unbeatable in any combat.

It's worth adding that one should do this sparingly. We're not talking about useless topic necromancy, here; we're talking about topics that are particularly useful to BoA players and have the potential for continued discussion.

Hmm. That's an interesting way of going about it, just putting the characters where they were in combat mode. I've just been using change_blocked(), but this might be better.

I have to say, the Exile I intro on SV really symbolizes Spiderweb best out of all of them. And it reminds me slightly of the end of Buffy episods ("Grr! Arr!"), which is always good.

One of the problems with putting forward a concise argument in favor of common descent is that the evidence is so vast and overwhelming that it's hard to summarize. All I'm really doing is summarizing the Wikipedia page on the subject.

The fossil record sometimes shows evolution happening, as in the case of the evolution of the horse, for which the fossil record is remarkably complete, or in the case of transition fossils, which definitely are found. Thus, we know that things change from one form to another, sometimes fairly drastically, and we know the mechanism: evolution.

Moreover, vestigial organs (the appendix) and poor adaptations (the panda's thumb), along with homologous structures of various kinds (bat wings) and junk DNA, are present so widely that we know that nearly every species shows traces of descent from something significantly different. So what we actually see happening in certain cases can be generalized to many more.

Likewise, careful computer simulations show that evolution of the sort needed to produce the diversity that we see today from the conditions of many millions of years ago. So simulations, too, suggest that life had to diversify from its original condition.

In short, life, the world, and everything of sufficient scope that we can test show that the life that we see could evolve from a single common ancestor (or perhaps a few) billions of years ago. Some of the things we observe would be rather odd if things didn't evolve from each other. Therefore, it makes most sense to suggest that they did evolve from each other.

Last semester was awful. Just awful. My two physics classes were incredibly boring and poorly taught.

Advanced Mechanics: "Now let's find the period of oscillation of this system if we have a sufficiently small perturbation from equilibrum!" "No, Lagrangian mechanics isn't important. We're not going to get to it until the last couple of weeks of the semester!" "I know that the introduction to this book says that you can only cover eleven chapters in a semester, but we're going to cover fifteen!"

Advanced Electricity and Magnetism: "Now let's talk about dipoles! Again!" "Now let's analyze this incredibly contrived physical system and compute a property that no one could ever care about!"

Hopefully this semester will be better, because (god willing) I'm not going to be taking any physics classes, just astro.

Astro 161: Cosmology
Longest list of pre-reqs I've ever seen. I'm looking forward to the class because I know the teacher is at least competent, and he's very nice.

Astro 121: Radio Astro Lab
Agh, a lab. I am not a fan of labs, and the astro lab is grueling. I don't even remember what we observe in radio wavelengths.

Latin H195: Honors Thesis
Heh. This one will be entertaining. My thesis is on the state of Latin pedagogy at the university level (with particular emphasis on what we do at Cal) and how it can be improved. Basically, how the Classics department is screwing up and how they need to get their act together.

History 181B: Modern Physics: From the Atom to Big Science
Hoping to be able to take this one (slight schedule conflict). It counts for the astro major.

Astro 198: Current Topics in Astro
A 2-unit course in which we present stuff we've read in scientific journals. Supposed to be interesting.

There is no objective on the part of the cave, the water, or the rock. Contrast that with an automated assembly line that produces heart-shaped chocolates. The machinery and programming have the specific purpose of shaping the chocolate into hearts every time.
This is not what the word "random" normally means. But now that you've defined it this way, let me object: how, by this definition, do we know that life is non-random? What specific guide or objective do we have that applies to life?

My argument deals with things for which we know the origins. The earth is prehistoric.
While our detailed models of planet formation are inexact at best, we basically know how the Earth was formed. But if you don't like that, take a star, perhaps (for best illustration) a star right before a supernova: it has layers (a hydrogen shell, then a helium one, then a carbon one, then an oxygen one, and so on), and there's a very definite specific pattern, so it's not random. There's not any real doubt about how a high-mass star is formed, evolves, and so on. (I know this because I calculated most of it for a final exam about a month ago. :P )

I could, but I might as well just point you to the Wikipedia article (which I did a few pages back), because it goes into basically all of the relevant points.

I'm not sure why you suddenly lost interest in discussing a point that you were interested in discussing previously. Was it because you realized that you actually had no answer, that your argument was as groundless as I'm saying that it is?

Seems suspicious.
