Library updated to include Bahssikava and Backwater Calls. Small bug fix to the bug described by Thuryl here. If anyone has any requests for the next version of the HLPM, now that I'm done with Bahs, I can probably put some work into improving this thing. Feel free to request new features. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Bahssikava updated to v1.0.2. Various bugs fixed. Ability to skip cut scenes entirely added. Ability to print party location added. Also, you can destroy that thing in southwest Western Bahssikava in the room with the Flamer only knowing one level of Bahssikavan language, instead of two. Congrats. I wonder now if I'll post one of these topics when I get to 3500, because I guess my title isn't going to change anymore, so it sort of doesn't matter. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Could one of you who got the error e-mail me a save file right before the error occurs? You see that thing to the left of your post under your name, the one that for you says "Apprentice" and for me says "White Rabbit"? That's a title. I don't like my title, for the record. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Hey, that six metal triangles thing was just because that's what the same dungeon in A1 required. No Jewish symbolism with the six-pointed star, no contrivingess, just plain duplication of the source material. :P I have a puzzle in the southeast corner of town 16 in Bahs that failed to work because of various bugs in BoA, but I still think the premise is promising. It's a beam puzzle with multiple heights involved and a projector that can be pushed via a terrain script. You have to get one beam to shoot across a chasm to activate a source, and you have to push a mirror through a watery area and prevent it from falling into the water. It would've been good. But alas, BoA can't handle beams criss-crossing at different heights and proceeded to implode upon seeing this puzzle. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. As far as I know, none. But then, I include "condition = 1" even though it's completely superfluous. The docs recommend that you include the "name = [character name]" line, which is the only reason that I do it, really. If anyone can come up with a reason not to do it, I probably will stop. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. DreamGuy, the only suggestion that had to do with "linearity" that you made in your e-mails was that I add a sidequest or something in the Temple of the Goddess. While I suppose I could do that, the scenario would still, overall, be linear. However, you made a number of suggestions about giving the player more options with regard to individual combats (making it possible to uncharm the charmed character in the drake lord-altar fight in Tunnels, for instance). If that's the sort of linearity that you're talking about, then you might want to make that clear, because I don't think many people think of that as linearity per se. (Those suggestions won't be implemented either, because the majority of comments that I've heard are that tactical combat arises from taking away the most obvious options and making the player think of something new, and that tactical combat is good, so I don't want to ruin it for other people just to satisfy one player.) But anyway, we're very early in the stages of BoA scenario development. Most of the scenarios can't help but be linear, because they're first efforts, and it's harder within the Blades medium to make a non-linear scenario than a linear one. TM and I aren't likely to make non-linear scenarios any time soon, but others may. Shyguy may make a scenario for BoA, and his are in a very different style than mine or TM's. So if you want a non-linear scenario, wait a little while and one will come out. Or, even better, make one yourself. You'll find that the bottom line here is scenarios made. People will perk up and pay attention if you start releasing quality scenarios. Otherwise, you're just another newbie. EDIT: You know, DreamGuy, having thought about it more, I don't see how Jeff's scenarios could be considered any better as far as linearity goes, except for ASR, which the community likes by far the most. VoDT is pretty much linear, and ZKR is, too. Do you consider those to be less linear than anything else released by a third-party designer? If so, how? In theory you can e-mail Jeff about it (his e-mail's on www.spidweb.com), but he's not likely to do anything about it. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Okay, I'll add the "skip scene" feature. It'll delay the release of the final version of Bahssikava until, er, next weekend at the earliest and the following one at the latest, but I'll do it. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. quote:I did mention that I'd add this feature if a few people responded that they wanted it (here, if you missed it), but no one did. Your feedback is not the only response I've gotten about the scenario. Many of the responses from other people do not match your criticisms. That is one limiting factor on how much of your suggestions I'm actually going to implement. The offer stands open: if more than one or two people want me to add this, I will. Post here or PM me or whatever. But DreamGuy, why are you insulting me? I'm just making scenarios. How can that possibly be as harmful as you make it sound? Even a bad scenario is a positive contribution to the community. A lot of people have been having trouble with the beam puzzles in Machinery, and Windows users can't use the walkthrough effectively because the walkthrough relies on coordinates. DreamGuy's words about Bahs are the source for the statement, "Some have even spoken desparagingly of the designers of linear, story-driven scenarios, saying that their desire to tell a story through the BoA medium is pretentious, even egotistical." You have to recall that you're not the only one who took that side in the discussion. EDIT: This is just sillly: "MY freaking GOD but you people are a sensitive bunch!" The file you want to muck with is Blades of Avernum Art in your BoA Files folder. BACK THAT FILE UP FIRST. Then open it with ResEdit and find a graphic that you want to replace and its associated other graphics (like, say, 1650, 1800, and the upper right-hand corner of 1680). If you don't care about the "riding-horse" graphic, you can just delete 1650 and 1800 and paste in their place the pictures that you have (with the same ID numbers as the ones you replaced, of course, which you can edit via Get Resource Info in the Edit menu). If you do care about the "riding-horse" graphic, paste 1680 into a paint program and replace the appropriate four slots with the "riding-horse" graphic. Then paste your resulting graphic back into the file and replace 1680 with that. The head actually goes in the BoA Graphics file, as part of resource ID 904, which you will also have to edit in a paint program. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
