JF (Lord of Evil) often attracts voluble disagreement when he posts in the various political and social discussion topics. That is, I think, the main reason he thinks that he is hated. I hope Spiderwebbers can separate debate from dislike, although sometimes I doubt it. —Alorael, who doesn't hate JF. He occasionally wishes for a few more line breaks, but that's not grounds for more than occasional irritation. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Shades are definitely undead from the same dimension as everyone else. There's at least one case of dead people turning up as shades (A1, somewhere in the Abyss). —Alorael, who doesn't thinks shades are anything impressive. They growl, claw, and look menacing. Specters, on the other hand, have nifty cold, draining claws. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's very hard to create civilization where none existed before. The troglos have a very different society, but it's a large step above giants and goblins. —Alorael, who doesn't see why the troglos couldn't become perfectly nice misshapen humanoids after they have negotiated a peace of sorts with Sharimik. They're not destroyed after E3/A3, just busy killing giants and being killed. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Games and movies entertain in very different ways. The plot of one is almost always unsuited to the other. If a movie were made out of Avernum, it would either have to heavily alter the games or it would have to be set in a different part of history that lends itself more easily to movie format. —Alorael, who certainly thinks that the First Expedition could be interesting. It could even be made as a very strange horror movie, where all the explorers eventually die gruesome deaths. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

There are spirits that haunt as well, and both can also appear without any real reason. Specters seem to be more like mindless killers, while spirits still have enough of a mind to use magic. Or maybe they're the same, but magic users who die become spirit while those who can't use spells become specters. —Alorael, who was actually thinking of shades while writing that. It still works for specters, though, unless he's confusing them with something else. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

We have a tendency to gloss over the flaws in those we designate as heroes just as we overlook the good done by those who we label as villains. Knowing both MLK's great civil rights victories and his personal pecadillos, I'd still call him a hero. He's not perfect, but he brought the end to centuries of institutionalized racism. Weighed against that, his adultery is a small crime. Donation to the Communist Party isn't a crime at all, no matter what Joe McCarthy would have you think. The Black Panthers may have been involved in many illegal activities. I'm no expert. But they did have a role in the battle (literally, in their case) for civil rights, and they had little to do with King and his nonviolent movement. —Alorael, who would not call murder by an African American proof of anything. Lincoln was killed by a white actor, but that does not mean that he is universally or even commonly reviled by whites. Or actors, for that matter. MLK did not incite riots. He organized demonstrations and boycotts, but he was always opposed to violence. There were race riots in America, but they were symptoms of the problems, not MLK's nonviolent solution. I'm sure people were killed in King's name, but people will kill for anything. He never encouraged anyone to do so. The Black Panthers were more violent, but I wouldn't base dislike of them on the FBI. The FBI (and certainly the police!) also watched MLK carefully, I think, and I know they wiretapped the house of his organizer and advisor Bayard Rustin. —Alorael, who must acknowledge that the FBI's surveillance of Rustin was more due to his one-time ties with the Communist Party and probably his homosexuality than because of his activism with MLK. He was arrested repeatedly for "moral crimes." Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

That mentality ended a good year ago at the latest. Polaris is, much like Desperance, a place where people go to escape the occasional bursts of Spiderweb stupidity. We just have a different definition of stupidity and a different outlook than Desperance. —Alorael, who would like to know where else he can find a game of Connections that is 1600 posts long. That is the true spirit of wasting time. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If we're including Polaris post counts, I'd be happy to raise mine and lower Drakey's. I'm not above underhanded tactics when something that, if you squint at it right, could be called prestige is on the line. —Alorael, who even knows the real number of posts he has on Polaris. But he's not telling, because stupendously negative numbers are so much cooler. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I'd take box B on the assumption that the alien has access to some information that I don't have. Without even bothering to wrap my mind around how he can figure it out, I'd just assume that the statistics are in my favor if I take B only. And while 1000 pounds would be nice, a good chance for 1,000,000 is worth a little risk. —Alorael, who would also gain certain celebrity from being the one to beat the alien at his game, as it were. So either way, by picking box B alone he'd win. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I believe we went in for the wrong reasons. We made a mess. That said, we're in there now and, while we have solved problems, we've created bigger ones. Leaving now would be dumping it all into the laps of the Iraqis. What we're doing now isn't useful, but we can and should be trying to help clean up the mess we've made. —Alorael, who doubts that will happen. But that's what should happen. As long as we're going to play savior, we should try to actually save Iraq instead of just leveling it. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Fine! Since SMoE claims that we're the same person, I'll take his posts too. That's another 1475, for a grand total of 8484, or about 11.4 posts per day. Ha! Not that this is something that one should be proud of, mind you... —Alorael, who still does not admit to actually being SMoE. He only claims legal rights to all of SMoE's posts. You get a CD case. Mine wasn't awesome, but it was a very nice case. It's one of the few I have that hasn't broken. —Alorael, who thinks Jeff should sell a Spiderweb Soundtracks CD. It could have all the intro music, the Mac E2 music, and random background noises! No, this isn't relevant. Why do you ask? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The engine isn't as advanced as it is in Avernum, but the game itself is great. Neither of the two sides take as long as an Exile game to complete, but they're both great, and it's also fun seeing how they relate. —Alorael, who also has to say that the plot is actually a plot, unlike most of the Exile/Avernum games. There are plenty of side quests, but you always have a clear main goal. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

With flood control (30 seconds, isn't it?), you would have to spend more than a day posting every 30 seconds to catch up. Drakey would catch you sooner than that. —Alorael, who does suppose one could abuse the double post hole in flood control to spam thousands of times, but that would be very, very bad. And, as of this edit, he has discovered that flood control is gone anyway. [ Friday, January 16, 2004 07:39: Message edited by: Alorael ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Not af my posts have survived. Most probably haven't. I've been through several incarnations of Desperance (and since fled in terror), forums that died entirely, two versions of Spiderweb, pruning, the many migrations of Polaris, and random acts of God/mod. Nonetheless, I have written a rather impressive number of signatures, if I do say so myself. —Alorael, whose signature can also be short. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Yes. —Alorael, who could have posted that as one-word spam. But then his signature got in the way. Ah, signature... 7000 of it on Spiderweb alone, plus a few hundred (maybe) for Polaris, some for Desperance, and a hundred or two on Ezboard, and more. That's a lot of words that aren't even, strictly speaking, part of the post! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I have set a new record for post count. I do this with every post, actually, but in this case it's a nice, round number. I just thought you'd like to know. In other news I have a list of demands. SMoE will stop using my signature, or else. Drakey will give me a custom title before I reach 7500, or I will not make that fateful post. Arctic will eat an invisible newbie in my honor. —Alorael, who has a reasonable chance at getting one of his demands met. One out of three ain't bad... The problem is that the PC graphic always appears on top of the terrain graphic. A sitting PC would look reasonable when facing southeast or southwest, but facing northeast or northwest it would appear to be sitting in midair behind the chair. —Alorael, who still sees a solution. As long as all chairs cover the same portion of the PC's body and leave the same portion uncovered, the sitting graphic could simply have the chair removed and the terrain could include whatever chair you'd like.
