If we don't have free will, it is because the laws of physics determined the course of every particle from the beginning of time. We experience emotions, have our opinions swayed, and in all ways behave as if we have free will. But in fact there is never any chance of anything different happening, because the stimuli are pre-programmed and our responses to those stimuli are pre-programmed as well. —Alorael, who already said it's not useful to think about it. Even if we don't have free will, we can't do anything about it and it isn't any more uncomfortable than life with free will. Just go ahead and make your choices, whether you really have them or not. The truthful wyrm tells you the right direction to go if asked. Therefore, if you ask the liar "If you were the other wyrm, which way would you tell me to go?" it would tell you the same direction, except it's a liar. So it tells you the wrong way. The lying wyrm would tell the wrong way if asked directly, so the truthful wyrm will tell you the wrong way if asked which way the liar would direct you. Thus, no matter which wyrm you ask, you get the direction you don't want to take. Wherever they direct you, you go the other way. —Alorael, who loves riddles with liars and truth-tellers. They can get ridiculously complicated, but you can always reduce them to a series of possibilities and work through it. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Diablo is about as far from story-driven as you can get. Deus Ex is, supposedly, but it's not an RPG. —Alorael, who can't say for certain about Deus Ex since he has never played it, seen it, or contemplated it deeply. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Avernums 1-3, like Exiles 1-3, are not scenario driven. They are each one game with one plot and area. Nobody can design new contents for them. Blades of Exile (and soon, Blades of Avernum) are created solely for the purpose of creating and running scenarios. They have no central game. So Avernum 3 runs no scenarios, only itself, and Blades of Exile is the only game that can run Blades of Exile scenarios. —Alorael, who hopes this can make things clearer. The format Jeff uses is a trilogy of "standard" games, then a scenario editor and scenario player. The scenarios need not have anything in common with the trilogy besides underlying engine. Chess is a great game, although I haven't been playing much recently. Settlers of Catan is fun too, especially when you're using German cards (tiles? pieces?) and can't tell what anything is. —Alorael, who can also proudly report that for the first time in his life he won a hand of poker. He doesn't play that often, but often enough that that is a very saddening statement. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The expected Mac release is in the spring, and the PC release will come a few months later. —Alorael, who expects that one or two non-Spiderweb scenarios will be released as soon as BoA is, thanks to the beta testers. Blades of Avernum is still in beta. Someone mentioned increased numbers, I think, but I can't find the post anymore. —Alorael, who can find the post that says that walls, floors, and objects on floors are all in different categories. So you can put trees on different kinds of ground to provide variety in dirt as well as foliage. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

No profanity, please. [Edit: It helps to spell someone's name right. I win no points for style.] —Alorael, who would like to say two things. Morgan and company, stop provoking STD. He doesn't handle it well. STD, stop exploding at people. You're not helping your case by doing so. Some people have created short animation sequences (and even fairly long ones) in BoE. Check out Ugantan Nightmares or Foreshadows (by the Creator and Stareye, respectively) for examples of BoE cinema at its finest. —Alorael, who believes the limits on terrain tiles have been expanded for BoE. Animations will also be far easier. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

But in another universe, you were hit by a falling ceiling tile and died before receiving the grade. —Alorael, who doesn't consider parallel universes an adequate substitute for free will. Parallel universes mean, essentially, that everything happens somewhere, so free will doesn't even matter. Every time you make a choice, you also don't make that choice. quote:This may be the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me! —Alorael, who never said anything about LotR not being (or being) origional. But aside from the snide comments, he really did enjoy it. And it really is far better than most of the half-baked imitations. I think the enormous backstory (the Silmarillion, the Histories of Middle Earth) can be thanked for that. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I much prefer Avernum terrain, especially with the nice addition of height. I agree that many of the monster and item pictures are somewhat lacking in artistry. One thing I definitely like about the Exiles, Avernums, and Nethergate is the outdoors. The games seem far larger than the Geneforges. Walking around in real time is also just not my favorite thing. —Alorael, who still prefers the Avernum engine to the other engines. But that is another argument. Scorp doesn't talk, he proclaims. Like all good orators, he likes an occasional smile and nod from his audience. —Alorael, who has been given reason to believe that Scorp either lurks or has his minions comb these boards for information. Knowing Scorp, he either intends to stage a coup or he is compiling blackmail material. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

That was a very good list of the flaws in LotR, but he didn't hit the major failure: lack of originality. LotR is just like every stupid half-baked fantasy story published by some idiot who couldn't come up with an original idea to save his life. Don't they all realize that blatant imitation doesn't make for good reading? —Alorael, who does agree that somebody should make a movie out of the prologue, or better yet, the Silmarillion. It would be insane and it would have only a limited audience, but just think of how much criticism the the soundtrack could get for not producing sufficiently divine Music of the Ainur. Vlad, better known as Scorpius, is a very unique person. Economic Left/Right: -7.38 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.87 I, too, am constantly drifting into the negatives in both directions. I was once a -6/-4... —Alorael, who suspects that the combined influences of Spiderweb, Bush, and changing from "agree" and "disagree" to the strong variants thereof are responsible. ASD is (was) antisocialdragon, an oldbie extraordinaire. She vanished for a long time and returned briefly around the time of the death of Misc. —Alorael, who misses ASD too now. Rentar-Ihrno and Erika are both good. Then again, they and the dragons are the only NPC's with any real development. —Alorael, who happens to like all the dragons for that reason.
