I am playing Geneforge now and I am enjoying it. I actually bought it over a year ago, after playing the demo, and am just now getting to it.

Anyway, I'd say I like the story/writing the most. Second to that, I enjoy the character development even if the mechanics of the game are relatively simple. I will say that the graphics, and to a lesser extent, the interface are hard to stomach at times.

So, my question is, what are the other Spiderweb games like compared to this one and would I enjoy them? I am downloading the Avernum3 and Nethergate demos as I type this (and plan on checking out Geneforge 2 after I complete Geneforge), but I thought I'd post as well.

TIA

For something a little different, try Blades of Exile; there are literally hundreds of different third-party scenarios made for it, some of very high quality, and you can make your own if after playing other people's scenarios you still have more time than you know what to do with. But if you have serious issues with Geneforge's graphics, be advised that BoE has 2D tile-based graphics, which you will probably like even less.

I may be biased, but I think a lot (read as: Luz Piazuelo's) custom graphics are good, and make more sense than many of those used in A1-2. (Personally, I think some of the graphics in A3 were nigh-on godsend with respect to their predecessors.)

I am from Texas. Olaf is just a nickname I picked up in school and it has stuck.

I tried the Nethergate demo last night, well sort of. The canvas/cloth looking background they seemed to be going for made reading the text absolutely brutal on my eyes. Almost like looking at one of those old 3d comic books without the glasses on, or something like that. So, I didnt get very far. Can anything be done about this? I checked the preferences setting, and looked through the readme, but I didnt see anything that looked relevant to my issue.

I got the A3 demo installed too, but havent checked it out at all.

The text should be dark blue on white or off-white tan, for the most part. If this isn't the case, then try asking someone in the Tech Support forum.

I've played through the Avernum Trilogy as well as Nethergate, and found both to be quite enjoyable. I once attempted to play BoE, but I was unable to stomach the graphics and interface and stopped playing almost immediately.

Agreed, the Avernum game demos are great (in fact I'll buy them soon) but I really did find The Exile games quite disappointing. I started off Exile 1 and noticed that there was no automap (or none that I could figure out), you can see very little of the area around you, and combat was not as good as Avernum. Nethergate Demo was good and I might buy that eventually...

And I wanna know. How can you possibly play Avernum without the editor? :D

I tried to play the Avernums, but I couldn't stand the graphics. I don't know why Spiderweb chose to degrade itself as it has with Avernum and Geneforge.

I much prefer Avernum terrain, especially with the nice addition of height. I agree that many of the monster and item pictures are somewhat lacking in artistry.

One thing I definitely like about the Exiles, Avernums, and Nethergate is the outdoors. The games seem far larger than the Geneforges. Walking around in real time is also just not my favorite thing.

—Alorael, who still prefers the Avernum engine to the other engines. But that is another argument.

If Geneforge 2 was the first spidweb game you played, then you would probably like the Avernum series better than the exile series. Although I do like the Exiles better.
