The UBB sometimes refuses to let you choose a member name if the name has been used recently, and it has a very loose idea of what "recently" means. I think it gives a different message, though, so if it doesn't mention it then that probably isn't the problem. —Alorael, who isn't sure he can handle a TGM going by the name of TGM. The addition of unnecessary punctuation could make it tolerable, and it would get around the boards' refusal to accept the regular name rather nicely. Alec's style in crushing the weak is truly spectacular when he puts some effort into it. His two-fisted fury gets my vote in the flaming contest. Not that I want to encourage such behavior, mind you... —Alorael, who is allowed to appreciate the aesthetics of a well-crafted implement of destruction without approving of violence. And Alec's posts certainly draw blood! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I drink orange juice, but I can't say I love it. I'm not a fan of pulp, and almost all good orange juice is pulpy. Bad orange juice is, well, bad. I like cranberry juice or cranberry with just about anything in it. This includes pouring together cranberry juice and other fruit juices just to see what comes out. Add some seltzer water and you have soda, only it's less sickeningly sweet! —Alorael, who very much dislikes milk. He drinks as little as he can. Sure, his teeth fall apart all the time and he regularly breaks toes getting out of bed, but he'll never sacrifice taste to bodily function! Occasionally PM's are overlooked for a long time, one's email goes down, and one must post here. Not often, but occasionally. —Alorael, who doesn't think TGM deserves to have his name back. A title, maybe, but not a name. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I read people of both genders like books written backwards in Sanskrit. That's not very well, in case you were wondering. —Alorael, who agrees that people are, on the whole, rather stupid. He need not look any farther than the workings of his own mind for an example of that, but happily he can see the model repeated some 6 billion times over. Jeff wrote about this somewhere. Hard copies of games are a bit more expensive since you have to pay for the CD and postage. They can be put online for free. On the other hand, codes can be cracked, and you're always giving out the full game. Basically, it's impossible to prevent some pirating. It's a matter of maximizing profits despite that. —Alorael, who would say that 90% of pirates would never pay for the game anyway. In that sense, it's not really a loss, just an irritation. The nickname TM finally makes sense once again! This calls for some celebration in a manner that has nothing to do with the new moniker, unless Arctic is involved, in which case nobody else should be. —Alorael, who will just close his eyes and cover his ears now. It can't hurt, and it may become very necessary very quickly. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I like the old Fantasia as well. The rest of the movies tend to be boring or inferior copies of books. Or both. —Alorael, who has been amused by the heavy alterations from book to movie. Aladdin, as an example, shares very little with the Arabian Nights Aladdin beyond poverty and a magical lamp. Where's the genie in a ring, hm? It's quite possible that all the retiring singles here are actually quite attractive to their shy counterparts of the opposite sex. It's just that neither one is willing to do anything at all to even bring it to the other's attention, much less flat out say it. —Alorael, who has once (and only once) been called quite handsome. It was enough to drive him to pedophilia and send him packing to Alaska. The fifty odd years, sadly, came of their own accord. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

General and the other leaving sections are still pruned regularly. Misc. has been left almost entirely untouched as far as I can tell. There's no buildup of new posts and no removal of old posts. —Alorael, who would rather not see avatars return. They were fun, but the ridiculous loading times caused by 25 avatars, some of which were far too big, were prohibitive. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I actually like the Exile graphics more than Avernums, but the different heights of Avernum do add a new dimension, pun intended. Exile has far more spells to try out. Many aren't useful, but you can spend far more time devising strange strategies. Avernum has fairly simple spells. Fry, buff, heal, summon. Also, with the removal of area spells, Avernum essentially loses the importance of formations. Avernum has an improved skill system in many ways. Equipment is slightly different, traits are more balanced, and the games have slightly more polish. —Alorael, who prefers Avernum to Exile. But really, the demos are all free. Download a few Exiles and Avernums and compare for yourself. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

In other words, we miss Misc. even now, long after it has vanished into the mist. I apologize shallowly and insincerely for the puns. —Alorael, who has already said what he has to say on the actual topic. You can stay, but people are unlikely to change. You can leave, and people are still unlikely to change. It's your choice. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I, for one, don't mind details. I have to say that getting that many details in every single post can be overwhelming, but it's the same in writing. If details add to the scene, they are good. If they are simply more words on the page, they are bad. I do mind RP posts and plot threads that don't seem to involve anyone else, but they could be far worse, and they're not impossible to improve. —Alorael, who has a slightly different take on the insulting criticisms. If you can't handle them you probably should leave, because it's as unreasonable to expect them to stop as it is for the critics to expect you to change overnight. If there's something to be learned from a critique, learn it, and if there isn't, ignore it. Sarcasm won't hurt you, even if it is as caustic as Alec's. I believe the problem is bandwidth, not server space. When Misc. was closed more than a year ago, not a single post was deleted. That points to no lack of room for babble, only the ability to send and receive that babble. Old, dead topics are no problem for bandwidth. Nobody reads them or posts in them, no information is sent through the server, and everyone is happy. I'm not really convinced that we're posting less than we did when we had Misc., but Spiderweb isn't complaining. —Alorael, who sees Misc. as a good place to store topics that should not be pruned but that should also remain dead until absolutely necessary. Not that it will be used for that purpose, but it would give that part of these boards more than nostalgia and old posts. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I propose that account #4000 become public property available to all of Spiderweb. Either that, or we can chop it up with Saunders's waveblade and split it among everyone who wants a piece. Whoever gives up his or her piece will obviously be the rightful owner. —Alorael, who would also like to propose a bet on how long a communal account could survive before being banned. 0$ says less than a day! Who deals with the problem when the admin spams? Who stops the admin from being profane? Who prevents abuse of power? Who can bring all the madness to a halt? —Alorael, who actually knows the answer. I've seen good RP of all kinds, although numeric RPing only works if the RP is established to work bu numbers. Particularly, I've seen plenty of narration in the present tense that works just as well. My preference in an RPer would be the ability to advance the plot with new twists and turns without forcing anyone else to follow or killing anyone else's plot ideas. —Alorael, who didn't say he was particularly good at it. He just said that he holds that to be the principle virtue of an RPer. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Mars has large amounts of water, although it's frozen. The Moon doesn't have much of anything to support life. —Alorael, who saw an article a while back suggesting that a colony could be sent to Mars with enough supplies to keep everyone alive for 100 years, assuming no reproduction. The fuel required to bring them back, however, could not be sent. One way trip, anyone? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Welcome back, ASD! If you came to pick up the sanity you forgot at the door, I'm afraid the ravenous ferrets have probably eaten it already... I think nerdism has to be a recessive trait, and heterozygous carriers exhibit some positive phenotype, ensuring that the gene survives. Kind of like sickle cell anemia... —Alorael, who uses the term 'jerk' in the sense that it was given to him. He'd call the type '"irritating individual with delusions of grandeur and a massive superiority complex." Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
