Walkin' back to the burnin' schoolhouse and the kids drinkin' in the park Late at night and the spirit moves me and I don't mind being afraid Old man with no clothes leaning on my fence Tell me where the money goes and the food don't taste the same I'm gettin' fast at being the last, you know I don't need to waste no time You can call me once a week, tell me where I been Phony lady layin' flat on the road and the helicopter going by And I'm down to the sound of the sky turned brown and I'm loving everything you say I don't think it's funny when you shaved both of my arms Lately I been spitting out things that I didn't mean to say But that's alright now, you don't listen to me anyway -- Beck Hansen, "The Spirit Moves Me" -------------------- You are my precious thing Thing of speed and beauty, You are my precious thing As long as you remain beneath me -- Big Black Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

MSW: Perhaps if you read more, you would know that "pique" is spelled "pique." OLotU: I saw the new Orient Express. It was a TV movie, if I recall correctly; it was a travesty. The only man in this entire universe suited to play everyone's favorite Belgian detective is David Suchet, who played Poirot on PBS's Mystery series. (They still play them on A&E, if you've cable.) Short, struts around like a pigeon. Looks like a penguin. Machiavelli: Brave New World is one of my favorite books. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Arancaytar: You may call me by my given name, Matt, or by my common handle, Djur. Actually, I didn't say exactly what you said earlier, I translated it from Fatuous. Reading is unproductive because it has no purpose other than the dissemination of knowledge and entertainment. Murder: Some of us do not have hearing as a primary sense. Myself, for example. I am mostly unable to focus on a purely aural medium without something visual to occupy me. That's fine for music, which requires a more intuitive listen; books are much more concrete. CaseyJones: One of my eternal philosophies is "Never try to get meaning from a Mormon." Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

*is amused by Bob's statements on Camus* Albert Camus is my favorite author. Two things: first, you should read with an eye towards the allegory, not the actual events of the book; second, he's much less dry in la langue de Moliere. I try not to read whenever possible. A thoroughly unproductive pastime. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

A meme is simply an atomic idea. A single concept. That's all. Memetics is the study of the spread of ideas. Just because it's been buzzed and applied to idiocy on the Web doesn't mean it's useless. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

quote:I know the rules, dearie. I wasted a few months of my life enforcing the damn things, so please don't try to tell me about them. By "illegal" I didn't mean "banned by the feverish mind of an idiot" but rather "banned under applicable law." WORD TO YOUR MOTHER: Yes, a hex editor can be used to crack shareware games. So can a text editor. So can a debugger. So can a number of other tools. Why ban discussion of a perfectly legitimate tool just because it can be used for cracking? MESSAGE TO MR. THOMPSON! You already have a rule that forbids discussion of cracks. Isn't that enough? Teaching someone how to edit their save file to give them supar powars!!!wtf isn't going to endanger Vogel's profit line one bit. едитед [ Friday, August 29, 2003 07:50: Message edited by: The Ready Men ] -------------------- You are my precious thing Thing of speed and beauty, You are my precious thing As long as you remain beneath me -- Big Black Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Yeah, then it's just warez instead of a crack. Ara> Problem is, I heard there are h*x cracks that also take care of BoE. Dunno if that's true of course, only a rumor. What the hell is h*x? In my eight years as a programmer and cracker, I've never heard of such a thing. EDIT: Imban informs me that h*x is supposed to be hex. As in short for hexadecimal. As in a patch created using a hexadecimal data editor, the programmer's best friend. I would like to take this moment to say: HEX HEX HEX HEX HEX HEX HEXADECIMAL HEX EDITING (PERFECTLY LEGAL YOU STUPID IDIOTS) HEX HEX HEX HEX HEX!!!!!!! Studs Terkel's "The Good War". Just got finished with Hard Times. Moving on to Nathan McCall's Makes Me Wanna Holler next. What's sad is that one of my favorite books is actually a graphical novel (i.e., comic book). "Watchmen." Alan Moore. Awesome comic. The last panel of Chapter XI sends a chill up my spine, especially with the quotation next to it. It's genius. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

There are three types of roguelike. All of them originally came, obviously, from Rogue. Rogue begat Moria and Hack. Moria begat Angband. Angband begat many children. Hack begat Nethack. Nethack begat many children, including ADoM. ADoM is one of the third type of roguelike, which is an overland adventure (unlike Hack, which is a limited dungeon crawl, and Angband, which is an unlimited dungeon crawl). However, the whole line of games like ADoM (Omega is another) did originally inherit their play mechanics from Hack, not Angband. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

TNG kicked ass. It's possibly among the top five best shows ever on television. I can never choose between it and DS9, but one of them are in there. Although I tend to laugh more while watching TNG than anything else. It's damn funny. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |
