The FCC is vitally important. Without it or an analogous regulatory organization, broadcasting would be pure anarchy. I'm referring less to their dwindling regulation of content (PPV porn, obscenity, etc.) than to their regulation of bandwidth.l X, Thuryl is entirely serious. He is an absolute utilitarian -- the best action is whatever does the most good for the most people. He doesn't believe in natural rights, for one. I, on the other hand, am a libertarian. The best action is that which restricts one's natural rights the least. Natural rights are defined as the right to do anything that you could normally do outside of the constraints of civilization. These are positive rights, by the way; you have the right to kill, but you don't have the right to not be killed. I don't follow the laws of the United States, because the social contract (the Constitution) is no longer valid, having been repeatedly and continually violated by the Federal Government. Obscene language is not immoral. It obstructs nobody's natural or societal rights. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Pokey the Penguin is a sporadic exercise in semi-Dada absurdism by a young man named Steve and his younger brother. It has absolutely nothing to do with Desperance other than the fact that many of us are fond of it, plus I'm somewhat acquainted with both of the Authors. I can't speak for any other site, but there hasn't been a conspiracy at Desp since Gemini. Who da man? Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Apple users shouldn't hate either IBM or Microsoft. After all, IBM is integral in the development of the PowerPC architecture, and Microsoft developed Office for the Macintosh originally. What's more, MS bailed Apple out of one of their many crises (spurred on by the fact that Apple is run by idiots). If it wasn't for both of those companies, Apple would very likely not exist today. Wal-Mart is a creeping rot in rural America. AOL/TW is more problematic; on one hand, they're a huge media conglomerate; on the other hand, they're supporting the Mozilla project and Nullsoft; on the other hand (I feel like I'm considering a marriage proposal), they ran off Justin Frankel for WASTE and fired Netscape. The true evil, Monsanto, ADM, and their ilk, are absent in this poll. So I must abstain. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Exile I, II, III, and BoE all run excellently in Wine. In fact, E3 for Windows runs better in Wine than E3 for Linux runs natively. Avvy 1 and 2 run fine, if a bit slowly, in Wine. They run a bit faster in Transgaming's WineX, if you want to bother. I haven't tried A3, but I'm sure it'd work fine. I haven't tested Geneforge. I'd be again surprised if it didn't work. -------------------- I've got a pyg in a poke. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Doston is the 5th continent, but it doesn't exist until the First Cataclysm, which occurs after the collapse of the Empire. The colored areas on that map represent Doston's political layout a short time before the Second Cataclysm. -------------------- I've got a pyg in a poke. The explanation for wanting the Empire to have fallen is because without the Empire collapsing, you can't have the Arena timeline. -------------------- I've got a pyg in a poke. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Hard question to answer. I've spent more time playing Nethack and XEvil than any other games; it's a dead heat between the two in how much I like them. -------------------- You are my precious thing Thing of speed and beauty, You are my precious thing As long as you remain beneath me -- Big Black Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Pygmalion is deeply scriptable, based on events. The scripting interface provides nearly full access to the internals of the engine, even to the game's user interface. It's focused around single, selectable units rather than a fixed-size party. It makes no distinction between players and monsters, allowing creatures to join and leave your party at will. The AI allows monsters or groups of monsters to be allied (i.e., in a party), friendly, neutral, or hostile to the party or other groups of monsters. This can lead to some interesting tactical situations. The engine is flexible and yet pretty simple, but it tries to avoid what Alec termed the "pencil and pad of paper" syndrome (providing an extremely flexible environment but nothing premade). IT. IS. NOT. BLADES OF AVERNUM. It is not a clone of such, it's not inspired by such. I started developing Pyg when BoA was just a rumor. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Yes, the project is still alive. Very much so. Active and all. I'm the only developer, and I actually have a life. So it's hard enough to find time to work on Pyg, much less update a website, which is why there isn't one. As to when it's going to be finished: Here's the Pygmalion 0.5.2 ReadMe: quote: Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Still crashing on hitting "webpage," still unusably slow, still intercepts Ctrl+Alt+Fx as well as Super_L+x. I don't notice any difference in this build, I'm afraid. Running it on :1 doesn't help. (I have a second X server running for lower-res fullscreen games like Starcraft). I have a feeling that -march=pentium-pro -O3 is going to be the most speed you're going to be able to squeeze out of GCC. I don't think the Makefile would be of any help. All I can suggest is running gprof on a debug build. See where the bottleneck is. I don't believe it's on my end, because I'm developing a higher-resolution 24-bit game using SDL written in Python that's getting 60fps. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Fatalist! unclean... unclean... Everything ebbs and flows in an eternal rhythm, a slow waxing and waning without beginning or end. The universe has a heartbeat, you might say. And sometimes, if you can detach yourself from the world just enough to stop listening with your ears and start listening with your soul, you can hear it. The Way is everlasting, perfect, and inexorable; what we call reality is temporal, flawed, and malleable. The wise person chooses to float like a piece of driftwood in the tide, rather than frantically struggling against it. Bubbles, tricks of light, ripples -- that's all it is. That's all any of it is. So why bother? Shape the world into what you want and do what you will. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

JF, you're Jesus Christ the Savior. "Black Power propaganda." Dear Lord. I'm literally rolling on the floor dying of laughter. I also invoke Godwin's at Custer. I'd also ask Sir David that if he has nothing other to post than "I don't want to post anything because I'm sick of you," he should post nothing at all.
