On behalf of all of the people here who aren't frothing Vogelophiles, I'd like to ask you to take a chill pill. You won't be able to stop the crackers. It's like drugs. As long as there's a demand, there'll be a supply. When it comes down to the bottom line, the small amount of revenue siphoned off by cracks or warez is just part of the software business. There's only one sure way to prevent crackers. -------------------- You are my precious thing Thing of speed and beauty, You are my precious thing As long as you remain beneath me -- Big Black Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Since most of the game logic bugs have been fixed, the Windows beta cycle should be rather shorter. And Protest Warriors wave the flag of fascismo. It's the standard process. Establish your enemy as being some sort of united front of wrongness (they happily lump every liberal into the same camp as Pol Pot and Stalin) and mobilize the forces of "righteousness" to destroy them. It's always in the name of freedom. That's the only way you can promote fascism nowadays. The only way a person could act the way that those young gentlemen do is if he was convinced that he held a monopoly on correctness. "I'm right, you're wrong, now it's time to destroy you." The good news is that fascism always loses. Any system that concentrates power into the hands of a small number of people loses. The word "conservative" describes people today that would be considered by the conservatives of past years to be nothing short of insane. -------------------- You are my precious thing Thing of speed and beauty, You are my precious thing As long as you remain beneath me -- Big Black Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

The real issue is that under US law and I believe WIPO regulations, genetic modifications can be patented. This is extremely troubling, because it leads to two evils: either the crop is sterile automatically and farmers (often impoverished, think Africa here) have to buy seed for every planting season, or the crop isn't sterile and the farmers have to religiously avoid crossbreeding between the local variant and the GM variant. Why? Because if the right genes end up in the local stock, Monsanto may legally own all of the corn or wheat or whatever in an entire area. It'd be ruinous. I'm not concerned about GMO for health reasons at all. I'm concerned about it for economic reasons. Genetically modified crops have a great potential to be a yoke. Irradiation, similarly, is not troublesome because of some potential danger, but because it's not really all that effective. (Irradiated meat also sometimes tastes a bit off. Consumers Union did a blind taste test.) Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Poor Thuryl. I tend to name characters in some permutation of "Djur." Ever since I got on my Portuguese kick, another name I've liked has been "Nascimento." I tend to name females "Valentine" if possible; yes, I'm a huge OSC fanboy. Although once when I was playing MS Hearts at school, I named my opponents Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain, and Layne Staley. Heh. I had an entire Avernum party of Djurs once. Fallout characters of mine are always None, the character with no name. Single-character god parties are "Kreuzfahrer." Of course, I also tend to sometimes throw in Arena characters of mine; Akbok and Altin from the old days; the Quin dynasty, Arakt, Akbaa, Maaya... Word. If anything, the Macintosh operating system has historically been more vulnerable to viruses than Windows (at least the NT series). That's because prior to OS X, MacOS has been resolutely a single-user desktop operating system without a real security model. No, Multiple Users and Macintosh Manager don't count; both have more holes than Swiss cheese. Let's not forget unprotected memory. On the other hand, the consumer series of Windows didn't bother to even consider security until XP. That's a pity. On the other hand (what am I, a Jewish patriarch?), Richard Stallman once said that the very need for passwords and security on personal computers is indicative of "social collapse." -------------------- You are my precious thing Thing of speed and beauty, You are my precious thing As long as you remain beneath me -- Big Black Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

"The universe is getting hotter" is an invalid assertion. First of all, are we talking average temperature or total heat? If we're talking the former, TM's very probably right -- the rate of expansion of the universe probably outpaces the increase in entropy. But, assuming the universe is a closed system (assumed but unproven), the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics would mean the total heat of the universe is ever-increasing (entropic reactions are also generally exothermic). I could see a CDRW being damaged by a magnet, but a CDRW could be damaged by a slight breeze. Horrible medium. If you're close enough to the kind of magnet that it would take to warp a CDR, on the other hand, you'd better watch your fillings. Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |
