TM, if we leave over SMoE, he's won. He'd relish that even more than having this topic locked.

Zephyr is Russia. The Russian anticommunist White Army was backed by American material support.

Sir Motrax is North Korea. You all know about the Korean war, I'm sure; I'm giving SMoE North Korea because he makes Kim Jong Il seem balanced.

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars (3)_files/kn-map.gif)

EDIT:

He's still at it. I would like to formally request that this topic not be locked, and that SMoE's posts not be edited or deleted. I want everyone to see. I'm informed that Imban has copied this thread to the Mod Board and recommended action be taken. 'bout time.

EDIT TWO:

(21:07:44) MBoehX: Hello there.
(21:07:56) Motrax: Hiya!
(21:08:02) MBoehX: What the {X} is wrong with you?
(21:08:29) Motrax: Calm it down a notch! Nothing's wrong at all.
(21:08:42) MBoehX: What's with the posting on my thread?
(21:09:20) Motrax: I'm trying to get it locked, and if I get banned as a consequence, finefinefine.
(21:09:33) Motrax: I think I'm doing a mediocre job though.
(21:09:35) MBoehX: It's not going to be locked. Why do you want it locked, anyway?
(21:09:54) Motrax: Aren't there enough "everyonehatesamerica" topics?
(21:10:08) Motrax: You've got free reign of desperance.
(21:10:10) MBoehX: Who says this is such a topic?
(21:10:25) Motrax: I say it's such a topic.
(21:10:43) MBoehX: And thus you've decided it may not live? You make me sick.
(21:10:58) Motrax: Ok.
(21:11:33) Motrax: I can't decide whether or not it lives.
(21:11:52) Motrax: I'll do my best to try and kill it, but imby could just ban me and delete all my posts.
(21:12:03) MBoehX: You're disgusting.
(21:12:07) Motrax: Why?
(21:12:27) MBoehX: Because you're having a piss fit over something that you could just ignore.
(21:12:39) Motrax: I've ignored a whole lot already.
(21:13:04) MBoehX: The problem is, we are not breaking the rules. You are.
(21:13:06) Motrax: I do have some respect for my country, and I'll defend it whether or not anybody who cares is watching.
(21:13:19) MBoehX: You're not defending it by acting like a {X} imbecile.
(21:13:31) Motrax: So how should I defend it?
(21:13:38) Motrax: I can't refute anything that's been said.
(21:13:39) MBoehX: The real patriots in this country are the people who have the balls to stand up and say when things are wrong.
(21:13:41) Motrax: It's all true.

Throw the goddamned book at him.

Hoo boy. I was out having my sexual proclivities insulted.

Anyway.

NaCN is Iran, whose corrupt pro-Western-business Shah was propped up by the States for quite a while, culminating in the Iranian Revolution which was really good for no one.

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/ir-map.gif)

stranger is Israel, which is a violent apartheid state in the throes of interminable chronic civil war. Of course, the dominant faction is pumped full of US money and weapons -- more money goes to the Israeli government in foreign aid than the federal government gives to any state!

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/is-map.gif)

General Custer is, appropriately, the Sioux nation, who were driven out of their land and systematically eradicated by American forces.

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/us-map.gif)

Lord Bob is Somalia, a state that is currently in what, to paraphrase Thuryl, I would call "the bad kind of anarchy." If you're the type to keep up with overwrought pro-USA rah-rah go-team sorts of war movies, you probably know that the United States sent in troops in a well-meaning but ill-advised attempt to secure food shipments to Somali civilians.

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/so-map.gif)

RoR is East Timor, which was conquered by US ally Indonesia in 1975 and oppressed for 27 years with the implicit acknowledgement and explicit support of the United States. As many as 250 thousand people lost their lives during the armed occupation.

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/tt-map.gif)

X gets to be Hawaii, which was subjugated by American marines at pretty much the direct request of the Dole fruit company.

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/us-map.gif)

RentBoy is Cuba, which was freed from Spain in the Spanish American War, but promptly placed back under American domination with the Platt amendment. Later, the revolution of Fidel Castro was supported with US weapons and money; not too long afterwards, the US-supported Bay of Pigs invasion was a massive and resounding flop.

Alorael is Germany, where the US first involved itself in a war it should have never been involved in and then came very late to deal with a problem that it was partially responsible for creating.

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/gm-map.gif)

Imban is Mexico, which the United States fought against several times in order to get land out of the deal, most notably to protect a bunch of lying, treacherous thieves who we call the founding fathers of Texas.

Not patriotic? Speak for yourself. I am an admirer of the supposed ideals of the American state, even if I despise many of its actions.

Omlette is Vietnam, where US forces fought civilians and guerillas alike in a desperate war to support a hated dictatorship, protect Western economic interests, and prevent a popular Communist party from gaining power. This long war devastated the land, economy, and spirit of Vietnam, and caused what was once a somewhat leftist revolutionary group to shift to hardline Maoist.

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/vm-map.gif)

XYZ is Nicaragua, whose once-popular Sandinista revolutionaries overthrew an oppressive government only to be constantly harried by counterrevolutionaries supported by US weapons and cocaine money.

The_Nazgul, obviously, is Chile, whose elected leader Salvador Allende was overthrown by a US-backed coup!

IMAGE(United States Conflict Avatars_files/ci-map.gif)

Dacovind is Afghanistan, where thousands of civilians were killed overthrowing a government that the US helped establish in the first place, replacing it with a token government that can barely keep control of the capital and a handful of powerful ethnic warlords!

This topic comes to you courtesy of your old pal Scorpius. Hi, Scorp!

Post in this thread and I will, in this manner, match you to your very own nation that has, at one point, been the subject of an armed attack by the United States or her agents.

Go!

The_Nazgul: Hello, comrade! I think that the words of one of your countrymen are appropriate here:

quote:

Cuando sonó la trompeta, estuvo
todo preparado en la tierra,
y Jehova repartió el mundo
a Coca-Cola Inc., Anaconda,
Ford Motors, y otras entidades:
la Compañía Frutera Inc.
se reservó lo más jugoso,
la costa central de mi tierra,
la dulce cintura de América.

Bautizó de nuevo sus tierras
como "Repúblicas Bananas,"
y sobre los muertos dormidos,
sobre los héroes inquietos
que conquistaron la grandeza,
la libertad y las banderas,
estableció la ópera bufa:
enajenó los albedríos
regaló coronas de César,
desenvainó la envidia, atrajo
la dictadora de las moscas,
moscas Trujillos, moscas Tachos,
moscas Carías, moscas Martínez,
moscas Ubico, moscas húmedas
de sangre humilde y mermelada,
moscas borrachas que zumban
sobre las tumbas populares,
moscas de circo, sabias moscas
entendidas en tiranía.

Entre las moscas sanguinarias
la Frutera desembarca,
arrasando el café y las frutas,
en sus barcos que deslizaron
como bandejas el tesoro
de nuestras tierras sumergidas.

Mientras tanto, por los abismos
azucarados de los puertos,
caían indios sepultados
en el vapor de la mañana:
un cuerpo rueda, una cosa
sin nombre, un número caído,
un racimo de fruta muerta
derramada en el pudridero.
- Pablo Neruda, "La United Fruit Co."

My apologies for any transcription errors.

I wish all of you an introspective and thoughtful Independence Day. This is a day that has strayed far from its true meaning; it is now at best an excuse for meaningless partying and destruction and at worst an excuse for mindless patriotism.

Today should be a day to think about freedom and the ideals of the American Revolution and how well we've managed to abide by the principles of liberty.

Today is a day to think about the Patriot Act, the War on Terrorism, the War on Drugs, to think about the massive standing army and entrenched military-industrial complex we maintain in the name of safety, to think of the thousands in jail for possessing drugs. It's a day to think about the FBI, the CIA, the INS, and the DEA.

Today, we should all be thinking about how African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans, and women all make less money on average than Anglo American men. Let's think about what happened to Bill Maher.

Let's all think about how our civil liberties are constantly being eroded, let's think about the millions in poverty, let's think about the millions without health care while we go out and spend our money on bits of cardboard and gunpowder that go "boom" when you light them.

So let's commemorate the anniversary of the American Revolution by hoping we don't have to have another one.

Berries have seeds. And that's not the definition; the definition of a fruit is the fertilized ovary of a flower.

From a botanical standpoint, a tomato is a berry.

The Leylines Beta Version in General

Problems with the Linux version that I noticed within a minute:

1. It forces fullscreen and doesn't let you switch virtual terminals. Bad.
2. The redraw is horribly slow and leaves mouse trails on the title screen.
3. On the options screen, the mouse is nearly unusably slow. It literally takes ten seconds to cross the screen.
4. Hitting "webpage" crashes it.

More to come later. By the way, my machine is an Athlon 2000+ MP with 512MB PC2100 RAM and a GeForce 2 GTS, so I doubt insufficient hardware is an issue.

Edit:

5. Leylinux requires the SDL_mixer library in addition to libSDL.
6. The version of libSDL required is 1.2; you might want to mention that. Some people still have 1.0, and I don't believe the two are API-compatible.
7. It's good etiquette to mention that your Linux release is for i386. Linux is available for many platforms.

Edit 2:

8. More information on the mouse pointers: The cross pointer (title screen, game itself) is slow, in a "perfectly usable but trifling annoying" manner. About a third as fast as my pointer in regular X. The circle pointer (credits, options) is obscenely, unusably slow; it's barely a third of the cross pointer's speed.

Some thoughts: I think perhaps your rendering needs a bit of tightening. I assume you're using double buffering, but are you trying to use hardware surfaces where available? I notice you've compiled for i386, but do you really expect anyone with a 386-class processor to play Leylines? Definitely go for -mcpu=pentium -march=pentium -O2 as arguments to gcc.
SDL is nice, but it needs a lot of coaxing to produce adequate speed on many platforms. I've worked with the beast more often than I care to count; if you want, I can give you some pointers. You can contact me as MBoehX on AIM, crypto (at) desperance (dot) net on MSN, or by email at varelse (at) desperance (dot) net.

Once the performance issues are ironed out, I can test for play issues, although I imagine that they're the same for Linux as for Windows.

Thanks for being one of the few indy game developers to support my preferred platform!

- Matt

*applauds Omlette*

Sir David has a habit of superimposing hostility onto anything and everything so he has something to be outraged by.

Sort of like those wonderful people who install themselves as newbie champions and thus stick their nose in and defend people who honestly don't need defending.

Everyone on this board needs to push the intensity and investment down like five notches. The politics are worse now than they were in the bad old days of Desperance vs. Polaris (which I like to call "the manufactured conflict created by a bunch of self-important buffoons who had to create an enemy just to get anyone to pay attention to them"), because they're now personal. Person-to-person hatred and conflict.

In a way, that's better than judging twenty-some people based off a web site they share in common, but it still sucks. It's not just SW, though. It seems to be epidemic in online communities, especially game-related ones, especially game-related ones with "misc" or "general" boards. People become convinced that things are much more important than they actually are, and that who's moderator or who's administrator in a goddamn online message board really matters two bits when it comes to the real world.

What makes it even more sad is that not only is it a stupid message board, it's a stupid message board run by a game company for discussion of computer games. It's not important, it doesn't matter, and stop freaking taking it so seriously!

I'm not criticizing the Internet or saying relationships online are meaningless. My best friend is someone I know over the Internet; I count the vast majority of the members of Desperance as my friends. (I've never really talked much to Yellow Dart, though, so he's the exception. He seems cool enough.) But there's no reason to hold some sort of insane angry grudge against anyone on the Internet, much less become convinced that everyone's out to get you (TGM!) and it's all some eternal political war that you need allies in (David!).

So simmer down, all of you. For the good of us all.

Excuse me while I go look at my abridged edition of War and Peace. Ahem. Not even 700 pages. It's still a long and arduous read, and Rowling isn't a tenth of the writer Tolstoy was.

There's my issue with the Harry Potter books. As the fans have become more mindless and fanatical, they're willing to gobble down whatever tripe they can get their hands on, the more of it the better. Similar to Apple zealots.

Of course, I have an attention span just bordering on clinical deficit. Books longer than 200 pages begin to grate mightily.

I'm not trying to kill your fun here. I think it's great that people are actually reading something other than trash.
