I want to wish EVERYONE, including foreigners, anti-americans, and everyone else you normally wouldn't say Happy 4th to, a Happy Independance Day. As far as I know, none of us are living under horrible dictatorships or living locked up in a basement (involuntarily, that is  ), so I think that whether you are an American or not, you have the right to celebrate freedom. I wish all of you an introspective and thoughtful Independence Day. This is a day that has strayed far from its true meaning; it is now at best an excuse for meaningless partying and destruction and at worst an excuse for mindless patriotism. Today should be a day to think about freedom and the ideals of the American Revolution and how well we've managed to abide by the principles of liberty. Today is a day to think about the Patriot Act, the War on Terrorism, the War on Drugs, to think about the massive standing army and entrenched military-industrial complex we maintain in the name of safety, to think of the thousands in jail for possessing drugs. It's a day to think about the FBI, the CIA, the INS, and the DEA. Today, we should all be thinking about how African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans, and women all make less money on average than Anglo American men. Let's think about what happened to Bill Maher. Let's all think about how our civil liberties are constantly being eroded, let's think about the millions in poverty, let's think about the millions without health care while we go out and spend our money on bits of cardboard and gunpowder that go "boom" when you light them. Dave, shut up. i have no need to celebrate 'freedom' on an American holiday. i am not American, i do not need to join foreign celebrations. you, however, need to celebrate your economy being screwed over repeatedly, insane actions from the government, Florida-style democracy... the list goes on. don't think that just because you live in the States, you get to assume that all would want to celebrate a special day in another country. flame me all you want - i do not believe in the symbolism involved in Independence Day, especially after seeing you trying to cajole 'foreigners' like me into celebrating an american holiday. i know this is probably against the CoC, but Dave really ticked me off this time. -------------------- Urban wisdom is not actual wisdom. "Wise" Man, why did you go ballistic against Mister David when in the other topic your whole post was this: "i ain't celebrating an american holiday, i'm Canadian." Take your foolish grudges elsewhere please. If you hate Sir David so much, then leave Spiderweb instead of making it worse. You think I'm grinning with joy when people wish me a merry Christmas? I don't believe for an instant that Jesus was the son of god, but instead of getting offended that people aren't considering my beliefs, I'm just as happy that they consider me at all. David is merely trying to lighten the mood on an occasion that is happy for him. Wisen up, or take your wisdom elsewhere. EDIT: Since it is a happytopic, the fireworks were pretty good, although I'm not sure if they were worth watching between terrible traffic, oppressive humidity, and ravenous bugs. I'm afraid that I'll wake up tomorrow morning with swollen feet. Oh well! "Anti-americans" is a rather ignorant slur term. Seems to call upon diatribes against the left and foreign nations which stood in our way in crushing a dictatorship and replacing it with... a military overlordship. I celebrated the Fourth by getting a horrendous sunburn. Yay for cancer! Anyways, I was going to start a topic about the Muzzle Awards on the Fourth, but obviously didn't get around to it. The local indie newspaper (Boston Phoenix) publishes the top ten suppressed/undercovered newsstories every Fourth of July.
