If timekillers is what you're after, Everwars/ is worth a look. Except it isn't, but nor are most online games.

For simplicity and a vast, almost entirely literate community (a very rare thing among MMORPGs), NationStates is your best bet.

Given that I am quite male and rather happy with that, pregnancy would be more than a little out of the norm for me. o_O

Edit: I have just finished writing a rather complex search page for the database. Flaws: It can display only member number, name and the field being searched, it can take only one search criterion, it cannot sort and it can display only one page of results (up to 500). But all that might be fixed soon.

Edit: Very useful, especially when you try to round up all your multiple accounts. Some of us have a lot of those...

Edit2: The slight mistake in the field value for matches and contains are now fixed. Multiple words will now be correctly carried over when the form is submitted.

Today's bit of weirdness comes from Frappr, a new service that combines Google maps with Friends sites to build community maps (there's one for Spiderweb too, by the way).

It seems that the reputation of this site has spread even to Ermarian, and thence to the deeps of Bahssikava! For where else would these scaly fellows hail from? :)

These stats should have been posted on the seventeenth, meaning yesterday. However, yesterday was the day of a somewhat difficult presentation I had to give on a PHP program I'd written (sadly not this one, or it'd have been much more interesting), and I couldn't do anything in the afternoon except sleep. I fell down around 18:00 in the afternoon and rose from the dead at 3 AM.

I had set the script to start its work before I fell asleep, but there was a malfunction and it now I needed to start from scratch. Ugh.

...

[[8:23: Actual stats will be in in... one hour. Hopefully.]]

Edit 8:54: Two hours.

Edit: 9:57 One hour and thirty-four minutes. Here we go.

As before, the statistics can also be seen on ermarian.net (note there is a malfunction right now that I'll fix soon).

Note: All but the last two topics have been purged. The rest are available on PPP3, but I don't have time to change the links now

I. Joining Rate

136 members have joined us, and 86 of them have posted. This is in stark contrast to the statistics of recent months, and actually the highest joining rate since July 2005 (153 new members).

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 151/87
May 2005: 78/43
June 2005: 147/91
July 2005: 153/88
August 2005: 108/62
September 2005: 91/52
October 2005: 81/43
November 2005: 83/41
December 2005: 85/52
January 2006: 136/86

II. Activity

333 members have posted in total this month; of these, 86 joined this month and 247 are older members. This, too, is higher than in the last five months. Probably due to Avernum IV.

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 360 (273)
May 2005: 262 (219)
June 2005: 325 (232)
July 2005: 352 (264)
August 2005: 293 (231)
September 2005: 256 (204)
October 2005: 229 (186)
November 2005: 234 (193)
December 2005: 239 (187)
January 2006: 333 (247)

III. Postage

6580 posts this month, 66% more than last month. This is 204.27 posts per day, and 19.76 posts per member, and 0.613 posts per member per day.

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 7576 | 186 | 21 | 0.47
May 2005: 4723 | 169 | 18 | 0.52
June 2005: 7267 | 251 | 22.4 | 0.77
July 2005: 8691 | 271.6 | 24.7 | 0.77
August 2005: 5917 | 190.9 | 20.1 | 0.65
September 2005: 5412 | 174.6 | 21.1 | 0.68
October 2005: 4477 | 149.3 | 19.5 | 0.65
November 2005: 4389 | 141.6 | 18.8 | 0.61
December 2005: 3958 | 131.9 | 16.6 | 0.55
January 2006: 6580 | 204.3 | 19.8 | 0.61

IV. Rankings

This month's rankings are available here (or will be once I fix the bug).

+------+-----------------------------------+-------+------------+
| # | new name | posts | this month |
+------+-----------------------------------+-------+------------+
| 869 | Thuryl | 6408 | 485 |
| 4045 | Kelandon | 4818 | 385 |
| 335 | Dupreciation | 10533 | 368 |
| 6 | *i | 2099 | 307 |

| 261 | Slartucker | 280 | 199 |
| 6292 | Synergy | 562 | 198 |
| 4 | Prometheus | 6152 | 162 |
+------+-----------------------------------+-------+------------+
I swear these statistics take longer ever frigging month. Last month it was 6 hours, now it's been over 8.

This is one of those moderatorial decisions I can't quite follow. TM said the games were illegally available. They almost certainly are; 99% of software is.

I don't believe he said where, so how was his post in violation?

According to my stats table, the purge occurred shortly before midnight on Sunday, board time.

General had 44230 posts in 1279 topics at 0600 GMT, and 6131 posts in 164 topics at 0800 GMT - in between there was one point when the board was unavailable apparently.

So disregarding posts made in that time, about 38099 posts and 1115 topics were deleted.

All threads, as far as I can determine, were saved (see the PPP3 topic). If not, well, now it's too late to complain. :P

Edit: That laptop theft sucks.

Edit 2: Fixed some of the numbers.

That's awesome - especially the complete Geneforge bit.

Considering what the full awfulness I encountered in PPP1 (where threads were saved as

forum_name/forum_page/topic_title [page_number].htm)

I'm extremely glad to know that your archive will be easier to index. :)

For the next week, I won't be able to do anything, but if you ever have time, I'd be happy if you could zip it and either mail it to me or upload it to http://stuff.ermarian.net (access info is noted there). :)

As of this evening, the purge will commence. I would like to urge you all again to verify that threads have been correctly downloaded. You only need to check threads important to you; stuff that nobody finds important would not be missed.

I'm 99.5% sure that I got everything without glitches, but this is the last chance to fix problems. After today, I cannot do anything about it.

You can check a thread by finding its thread number (the bit in the address bar after "t=", which in this case is 3110), and then either entering it in this address:

http://pied-piper.ermarian.net/flute/threads/FORUM/THREAD/

where FORUM is the forum number (1 for General) and THREAD the thread number.

Alternatively, you can use the quick and dirty browsing tool I put together here:

PPP Browser

And enter the thread number in the left field, and the forum in the right one, then click "view".

--

Also, if you wish to revive a thread you would like to keep on this board, you should definitely do that now. Avoid doing this too much because it is spam, and be aware that the thread will likely get locked and then perish in the next purge anyway. But hey.

--

Finally, if you have a Linux machine (or have remote shell access to one), you can view the (read-only) mySQL database with the following command:

mysql -h mysql2.websitesource.net -D Burschk_piper -u Burschk_piper -pczif46Obviously, this will only be useful if you know some SQL. But I will have a normal front-end to that soon, so it will be more usable. I just don't have time for it now.

---

Edit:

I have combined the General part of ppp1 and ppp2 and added them to these threads. This is now the most complete archive of General in existence after I re-uploaded the last 4 ppp1 topics I deleted yesterday by mistake (long story, it has to do with cronjobs and much idiocy).

Law Bringer

On a forum frequented by players of BoA scenarios, you mentioned a part of the solution of a popular scenario which not all have played yet.

Most people want to find this solution by themselves, and being that it is extremely hard to forget a solution once you have been told it, they would be deprived of the experience of finding the solution.

It is therefore considered polite, before revealing information crucial to solving a puzzle, to announce that you are going to reveal a "spoiler" with a warning like the following:

quote:
[[SPOILER]]
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
At the end of Titanic, the ship sinks.
(meaningless example)

Or, if you want to make use of the wonders of HTML, you could use this:

The first password is spoiler (copy link address).
