Yes, but posting that meant you realize he lies. Good politicians have to be able to lie convincingly enough that one'd A)not realize it's a lie, and B) think they knew what they're talking about. I love pronouns, with them I can pretend I make sense even when I have no idea what I'm talking about. :P -------------------- ??? ?????? ???? ????? When you look at all the successful politicians in the world today (and, personal issues aside, someone who is an unethical dork and still manages to get himself re-elected would count as successful), you know they lie through their teeth all the time. The trick, apparently, is to do it in such a way that everybody knows, but nobody cares enough to do anything about it. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. You know, polydactyly is a strange name for the disorder. It's obvious when you think about it, but then when you think about it more it makes no sense. If you are monodactylous, you have a significant disability. —Alorael, who now must consider whether bidactyly would give you a total of two or four fingers. Is it normal to be quintadactylous or decadactylous? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

quote:Clearly, then, the correct state is one of oligodactyly. Or would that be having more than one digit, but still fewer than normal? A quick search reveals that the term is in fact used to mean having fewer digits than normal. I suppose we'll have to stick with "normodactyly", then. Bah, it ought to be "orthodactyly" if anything. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. In that case I can assure you that I am an orthodactylus-- eh, orthodactyle (?). No triple-jointed Vahnatai fingers either - wait, make that quadruple-jointed, after all, human fingers *do* appear to have three joints if you count all the knuckles. My coding speed (not really that impressive) is merely practice. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Unfortunately, "orthodactyly" is also taken as the name of an abnormal medical condition. It's when you're incapable of bending your digits. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

As in "straightfingered"? Well, I'll guess we just have to accept that there are many words to describe the abnormal, but next to none to describe the norm. :P -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. By fiat, it shall henceforth be decadactyly. [Edit: Is "to" in place of "two" a typo or a thinko? You decide!] —Alorael, who just couldn't finagle equidactyly into the right meaning. Equal to whom? What if you have two hands with the same wrong number of fingers? [ Friday, January 13, 2006 22:06: Message edited by: Gantim ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Perhaps "equidactyly" should be having the same number of fingers on each hand (regardless of how many fingers that may be) and "isodactyly" should be having the proper number of fingers on each hand. Or, er, "anidiodactyly" could be having the normal number of fingers, opposing "idiodactyly," having a peculiar number of fingers. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. What's wrong with "normodactyly", anyway? Is it half Latin and half Greek or something? -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

quote:Yes. The "norm" part is Latin, and the "dactyl" part is Greek. I mean, one could imagine something like "normadactyly" — it was "norma" in Latin — but it just seems ugly compared to "anidiodactyly," which is purely Greek. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Well, we already use "normotensive" to describe someone with blood pressure within the normal range, so I came up with "normodactyly" based on that. It gets the right idea across, at least. :P -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

We're speaking English. I'd be more than happy to use terms such as correctifingerous. —Alorael, who wonders if this is prescriptive, descriptive, or destructive English. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

As of this evening, the purge will commence. I would like to urge you all again to verify that threads have been correctly downloaded. You only need to check threads important to you; stuff that nobody finds important would not be missed. I'm 99.5% sure that I got everything without glitches, but this is the last chance to fix problems. After today, I cannot do anything about it. You can check a thread by finding its thread number (the bit in the address bar after "t=", which in this case is 3110), and then either entering it in this address: http://pied-piper.ermarian.net/flute/threads/FORUM/THREAD/ where FORUM is the forum number (1 for General) and THREAD the thread number. Alternatively, you can use the quick and dirty browsing tool I put together here: PPP Browser And enter the thread number in the left field, and the forum in the right one, then click "view". -- Also, if you wish to revive a thread you would like to keep on this board, you should definitely do that now. Avoid doing this too much because it is spam, and be aware that the thread will likely get locked and then perish in the next purge anyway. But hey. -- Finally, if you have a Linux machine (or have remote shell access to one), you can view the (read-only) mySQL database with the following command: mysql -h mysql2.websitesource.net -D Burschk_piper -u Burschk_piper -pczif46 Obviously, this will only be useful if you know some SQL. But I will have a normal front-end to that soon, so it will be more usable. I just don't have time for it now.--- Edit: I have combined the General part of ppp1 and ppp2 and added them to these threads. This is now the most complete archive of General in existence after I re-uploaded the last 4 ppp1 topics I deleted yesterday by mistake (long story, it has to do with cronjobs and much idiocy).
