Just finished seeing Kill Bill 1 and Kill Bill 2. How incredible awful, stupid, and highly entertaining with ridiculous implausible super bloody super sexy fights. Worth seeing for the ridiculous factor, not to mention Uma Thurman the bomb in action sexy foolishness.

Bram Stocker is a distant relative of Bram Stoker who works the night shift at 7- 11.

Right now I am starting a very thick book called Warrener's Beastie A Novel of the Deep by William R. Trotter. William R. Trotter is a distant relative of Harry Trotter, the deranged nephew of Harry Potter.

Try Dofus and get a Sadida character. It is a nice long joke. You might like it. The Dofus MMORPG is done completely in Flash. Or even better join Kingdom of Loathing, it will give you plenty of options. Attack that goblin with a spork. If you want something simple and a lot of fun with a few turns each day you can also try Majesty Heroes of Ardania. These are a few of these things. Other than that MMORPGs suck big time.

There are things in caves which the empire would want-- specifically metals, minerals, and gems. Nothing like a sulphur, gem, or gold mine to make an imperial happy. Send the happy exiles to work in the pits and bring back the goods.

I can't stand China Mieville-- it is bad political discourse of the dialectic kind written into well written fantasy, the political spider eggs make it unreadable for me. If you can swallow the politics, which make little sense in the modern context, it would be very readable. I won't.

Let me see. Back to stuff.

There are a lot of creatures that could be good enemies, troglodytes, giants, ogres and other large cave dwellers would have been here first, also aranea, chitrachs, hydras, wyrms, slimes.

There would be no cave trees. There would be no cave cows. You would have to somehow find a way to get them from the surface, the first secret portal used to steal cows, sheep, alchemical ingredients, and trees and stuff like that. You would have to somehow tame the first cave lizards. Learn how to make mushroom beer all kinds of things.

You would also have to do a lot of trading and plotting. Somehow you would have to deal with the first slith to get various things from the caves.

A nice little series by Naomi Novik including Black Powder War and Throne of Jade may be of interest to the naval stories crowd. It is a dragon rider series set during the Napoleonic wars, very interesting. Napoleon is fighting against Germany and England with dragons.

Aldous Huxley's Island is very differnt from his other books. It is utopian and very good. Well worth reading. I could not read Brave New World.

What have you been reading lately?

I have been having a hard time finding good new fantasy books lately other than Jeffrey Ford's short story collections The Fantasy Writer's Assistant and The Empire of Ice Cream.

I am looking for some good new science fiction and fantasy books to read.

Because there hasn't been a lot of that around I've turned to reading noir books, old fashioned crime novels like Max Allan Collins Two for the Money.

I like the Hard Case Crime novels so far.

I saw two films recently both kung fu comedies both are good light entertainment Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, both are worth a good laugh. Shaolin Soccer was the highest grossing domestic film in Hong Kong history.

You wouldn't necessarily have to do it as the first expedition, but the followup. Basically the guy who sets down the stakes to map out and build the towns. Different story. These guys would not be in the history books. They would be the founding families who went out and laid the foundations for the towns in Avernum. Different story. Basically go out from the first town and set stakes for the next town, set up mines, etc.

Here goes some more craziness. I can see a 2D Isometric style dungeon game being fused with one of these two recent independents-- Discord Times or Styrateg. I can see how a much larger more intricate game could be built around the components of say a 2D style adventure game and map interface style game like Discord Times or Styrateg. The graphics could get very interesting, a combination of both architectural building graphics, outside graphics, and dungeon graphics. It might use painted 2D style isometric graphics like in Mythic Wars which is a MMORPG. The only other style of this game is something like Warlords IV or Warlords: Battlecry, or Disciples 2-- these are much more intricate 2D graphics, but they really lack the roleplay elements to make them seem like a complete game. Also, the style is too awkward in both games.

This is a kind of crazy idea. It would be interesting to see Spiderweb do an avernum tactics type game. You would have all the standard Avernum features, but for certain battles you would be able to select units to join you from listings of different units. This would create a mix of a tactical rpg and a regular rpg.

Mount and Blade was odd. It is funny running around in a first person action game on horseback. I really couldn't get the controls right, but it is very interesting. You get to control your characters swings and blocks as well as bow.

I don't know enough about Morrowind to judge it. However, the demons destroy everything is not exactly an orignal story.

Here is what I don't like about Neverwinter Nights. 1) The controls and view are horrible. 2) The graphics are too boxy looking without enough curves. 3) The skill system is partially points based which sucks. It breaks with the traditional randomness of AD&D, making it weird. 4) It is too easy to manipulate the AI, fight in corners or use the terrain properly and it is too easy to kill the monsters. Baldur's gate design and game play were far superior, they took a step backward with this system. Instead of developing it further, they switched to a new system that was not as good for computer games.

Arcanum is a fun game which is not too expensive and has good game play. It is very different from Avernum, but it is still pretty good.

I think Fallout 2 is way overrated. Fallout 1 was good, but the be all and end all of games. It was fun. It is worth getting the original Fallout, but Fallout 2 is a disappointment.

There is nothing like Spiderwebsoftware Games out there that is any good from independent game companies. I despise Never Winter Nights, I despise a lot of the other game companies. There are a few Isometric MMORPGS like Daimonin with similar graphics, these get a little stale after a while. I've tried out most of the free games, they suck. If you are looking for a good oldschool game like Eye of the Beholder, Undercroft by Rake In Grass has a nice demo which is pretty good, but nothing like Spiderwebsoftware.

I think Exile started as a tabletop game which Mr. Vogel was running. He then turned it into a CRPG. I don't know if he would release it as a roleplaying game which would be interesting.

Wow, no interest. Well how about some decent titles by Chang Cheh of the Shaw Brothers Studio like Five Deadly Venoms, The One Armed Swordsman, or Eight Diagram Pole Fighter.

Rotoshop or Rotoscope is a form of animation where they paint over the real actors and do strange things with the reality in the film to make things happen... This is Waking Life, it should be very interesting... I will probably see it. This brings something up, A Scanner Darkly just came out a new Philip K. Dick movie using rotoscope techniques. It should be dark, disturbing, and an utter mind bending film. I am not sure about this one. South Park is a bit much... I might try Team America World Police, but still...
