I rather like animation films. Feature length animation films that is. This weekend I watched Ghost In the Shell 2: Innocence, Porco Rosso, and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Does anyone have any favorite animation films, I have seen lots of them ranging from Allegro Non Tropo, Fantasia, Wizards, Finding Nemo to many others. I haven't seen Cars yet, I'll wait for DVD. How exactly do you consider Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to be animated? :P A friend of mine dragged me to see Over the Hedge a few weeks ago. 'Ghost in the Shell' is one of my favourite films ever. As is 'The Nightmare before Christmas'. And I don't know if the American release had it, but on the special edition of TNBC, there is a great film called 'Vincent', which is well worth seeing. There was also a Japanese film called 'Howl's Moving Castle', I think. That is also well worth watching. -------------------- And when you want to Live How do you start? Where do you go? I'm allergic to extensive computer animation. But the older, hand-drawn stuff is great, as is claymation. If you like films by Studio Ghibli ('Porco Rosso', 'Howl's Moving Castle'), I would suggest 'Castle in the Sky', and 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind'. These are both great examples of their early anime in the 1980s. A note on 'Howl's Moving Castle' - although being visually stunning (as usual), the budget cuts really showed with the abrupt ending. I rather enjoyed the first IceAge and am partial to Wallace and Gromit. EDIT: My apologies for being a first-class idiot. the only "Modern" animated disney films that I like are Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Emperor's New Groove (though admittedly, the last falls into the teenage girls area) becuase of the quality and effort put into them. The only fully computer-animated films that I've liked are by Pixar, again because of quality. Ever since CG movies became a fad (especially for the 7-14 age demographic), I've generally avoided them. Cars was pretty good. Pinky and the Brain was the acme of non-film animation (no pun intended). But for the most part, I've found that major studios have simply stopped regarding animation as an art form and are now simply using it as a cash cow. -------------------- The Silent Assassin walked away before I could ask him for a quote for this post. I'd say the Toy Story films (I preferred the second to the first), and The Emperor's New Groove. I'm actually looking forward to Toy Story 3 (if it happens, I hear that it might.) I also liked the Polar Express movie quite a bit. Haven't seen any animated films that came out recently, and I don't plan to right now. EDIT: Oh yeah, Shrek! Can't forget Shrek! That's one of my favorite animated films. Wasn't too keen on its sequel though, and I don't intend to see the third. A good Studio Ghibli film is Spirited Away. I liked Over the Hedge too, as well as many of the earlier Disney films I watched as a kid. The only real part of the movie Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is the actors. The planes, the mechanical monsters, robots, and everything else is animation and background drawings. I have not seen Howl's Moving Castle. I have seen most of Studio Ghibli's films including one of my favorites My Neighbor Totoro-- a children's film. Also Wings of Honnemaise I thought was pretty good. It doesn't have to be super action films like Fist of the North Star-- bleah. I do like Wallace and Gromit, I might want to see Curse of the Were Rabbit. Between the Castle Cagliostro and Castle In The Sky-- La Puta, I liked the Castle Cagliostro better, it was a bit more fun. I'm a fair-weather Wallace and Gromit, I thought Toy Story was well done, and that's about it. Despite several attempts I've never been able to enjoy anime. Most of it seems to require some insight into a baseline anime mindset that I'm lacking. I might make another for Tales of Earthsea, though. —Alorael, who would like to point out the critical difference bewteen "La Puta" and "Laputa." One is from Gulliver's Travels. I really enjoyed "The Incredibles" (indeed, most Pixar features, with the exception of "Finding Nemo") as well as "Shrek 2." Edit: I missed seeing this in the first post's list. How about going back a really long time ago and include Ralph Bashki's Wizards. At least the ending is worth watching even if the rest isn't to your tastes. His Lord of the Rings was thankfully stopped early in the trilogy and he never tried to finish it. There was never a good animated Tolkien movie and they tried with The Hobbit and The Return of the King. Rotoshop or Rotoscope is a form of animation where they paint over the real actors and do strange things with the reality in the film to make things happen... This is Waking Life, it should be very interesting... I will probably see it. This brings something up, A Scanner Darkly just came out a new Philip K. Dick movie using rotoscope techniques. It should be dark, disturbing, and an utter mind bending film. I am not sure about this one. South Park is a bit much...
