What kind of game would you want? RPG like Avernum or Geneforge? Real-time or turn-based? I would like to see some awsome ideas. [ Tuesday, August 08, 2006 08:14: Message edited by: Othello ] Posts: 66 | Registered: Saturday, September 3 2005 07:00 |

Perhaps an Exiled version of Geneforge? Jeff must just love these threads, what with how incredibly hard it would be to just come up with some new idea that pleases both TM and the average customer. And, as always, as soon as a new idea is mentioned on these boards which might actually have some merit, it is no longer usable. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

How about, like, making something with a PLOT? For instance, how hard would it be to make Nethergate, but have it be Aztecs vs. Conquistadors? Or to have ANY sort of game not called "Nethergate" or "A Small Rebellion" in which the PCs are a part of the story? Like, why not have a game in which the player is affected by ANY conflict that has actual meaning? (Geneforge, I'm looking at you. How a mindless drone reacts to libertarian propaganda is not "conflict".) I mean, JV could make a game in which the party are fighters during eschaton? What about one in which the party is undead and has to find a way to be revived? Or how about a Memento-style game, where the plot is played in reverse? I mean, even within the realm of RPGs, there are way too many possibilities for JV to make a game that both appeals to the combat-heavy sentimentalities of a six-year-old that JV is dead-set convinced that he HAS to appease (ie, "allow for level-building" or "have an easy option and make the plot ignorable) while making a game that will simultaneously be playable to someone over the age of twelve. -------------------- * Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Evidently in Jeff's view Geneforge does have a plot, albeit it is now getting repetitive. And there really ought to be some plot potential in the ethics of genetic manipulation. We seem to have become bogged down despite entering promising territory. I'm not sure there's any such excuse for A4. I suppose A5 is now inevitable, but maybe it would be better not to bother with G5. It should be possible to explore similar themes in an entirely new timeline (inevitably keeping the same engine, graphics and spells, etc). I would echo TM's call for more meaningful involvement of the party in the plot. GF2/3 both suffer from the feeling that whatever you do, the wider war will just carry on regardless (and locally there is little variety as each sect/island is essentially the same). What seems to be needed is more imaginative microplotting, to balance the global plot if it is felt you can't alter that. Not necessarily originality, but drawing inspiration from a wider pool of ideas. Changing the subject... In the interests of accurate spelling, I'd like to point out if Othello were to edit the first post of this thread (including the topic title), that would be awesome. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. Jeff seems to no longer want to write in the Exile engine. He could use an existing engine like Blades of Avernum, Geneforge, or Nethergate and start in a new world. I agree with TM *shudder* that the plots in Geneforge are more dependent upon agreeing with a sect's opinion and less with your actions. I would like to see a more Nethergate style game where you can pick a side and play the game from that viewpoint. For Avernum that would mean a loyal Avernite protecting the land or a Darkside Loyalist working with stealth to overthrow the system. Too bad that Jeff can't use some of our ideas where we would just get credit for the idea since we don't have to do the work of implementing it. quote:I don't thnk a turn-based game would realy interest the SW community. He should make a game with the Exile graphics, I tend to like them more than the Geneforge and Avernum ones. I'd like to take the time to echo the sentements expressed before, and add a little bit of my own. It seems to me that the past few games have been less and less about the party, and more about the events of the world of the party, regardless of the party's actions. Did that make any sense? If the party could have a more active role in the world, instead of just in alignment and celebrity? -------------------- The Silent Assassin presented me with the storyline for a BoA scenario that he wants me to work on (while he goes off and plays with his own, I suppose). It's looks like GF4 will have a large role for the party to play, and BoG is probably several GF games away. -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Happy Happy Joy Joy Encyclopedia Ermariana - Trapped in the Closet ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse!
