Personally, I like quests better than puzzles. The finding the ruby quest to make the Blaze Ring in A Perfect Forest. Recovering objects is always fun, or finding all the pieces to make a cool item you have to go various places, buy it, steal it, fight for it, answer riddles for it. Having to look for things is cool. So are delivery quests. Bring the map to the to the town of doodad, etc.

One more thought use the environment to the advantage of the monsters. Demons have flaming floors, ice drakes-- icy floors, giant slugs-- disease causing swamps, deep dwellers-- total darkness, undead are in ruins-- think twisty corridors opportunities to corner and ambush the party, etc.

What makes battles interesting is making them tactical. There should be a variety of different kinds of battles. Monsters should have different abilities and require different strategies.
For exampe. Have one battle with ruby skeletons and flame area skeletons. Another battle with spiders, aranea, and elder aranea. Another battle with asps, diseased asps, and naga. Another battle with bandits, priests, and mages.

Use the terrain to give the monsters an advantage. For example create a gauntlet-- several monsters in the middle surrounded by archers, or put the monsters on islands or cliffs so they cannot be easily reached and you have to use missile combat.

This game is very visual. Add in some new monsters as well. It is variety that makes combat better.

I don't know maybe you could save it from other adventurers or help it out in some way. But the usually job of adventurers is looting and pillaging anyone we decide is bad.

Of course there are also a variety of hoax animals that might be fun to put in--
giant riding rooster, fur bearing trout, hodag-- horse dog, jackalope, skvader-- flying hare, and woofen-poof-- flying metallic looking bird.

Also there are various cryptozoological creatures that may be interesting-- chupacabra, yeti, ozark howler-- a big cat with glowing red eyes and horns, Russian Wooly Mammoth, Nandi Bear, Thunderbird, wolperdinger, and Giant Gorilla. These should be hard to find and hard to kill.

Looking through the Louvre-- There are already graphics for dryad, faery, harpy, and satyr. I think in the Arcane summoning spells you can get a centaur. Looking through the default creatures in Erik Westra's Blades of Avernum Cookbook we have unicorn, imp, ogre, pixie, salamander, witch, hydra, centaur, centaur chief, basilisk, demon, dragon, drake, drake lord, naga, efreet, giant, giant chief, raksasha. If you use the graphics from Nethergate you can expand this get more fairies, formorians, and other stuff. Also if you take the "Speres" from Emerald Mountain you have a set of tribesman to go with a legendary scenario.

It looks like it might be a variation of the twisted cross basically a full size cross with bars at the end of it symbol of the Christian germans inside the third reich. A kind of cross Swastika. Not sure though.

Hi, all,
A new conceptual topic. There are a lot of legendary creatures from mythology in Avernum. How do you think so many legends from earth ended up in Avernum. Also what is your favorite legendary creature floating around in Avernum?

The following creatures peaked my interest:

Dragon
Griffon
Naga
Pixie
Raksashi
Vampire

What new creatures do you think will be added soon.

Some which would be cool to see would be:

Tengu
Werewolf-- I think you could script a man to turn into a wolf.
Roc
Chupibaraca
Manticore
Sphinx (perfect for riddles)
etc.

I think of this scenario as more of a conceptual scenario. A lot of it doesn't make sense but it is still fun to play with. It is kind of a strange mix of ideas with a lot of almost fortean happenings. The cornucopia, the transverserai, the maze to the surface. ;) There are a lot of things missing like roads, but that is alright.

It would be nice to see someone put together a scenario where the mages school does not blow up. I am thinking of a kind of school that would focus on alchemy and blessing magic. The head teacher who had written the Books Encyclopedia of Garden Magic Alchemical Components and Their USes, and Portals to Higher Planes would have gathered a set of powerful guardians-- a deva, a few pixies, a pair of unicorns, some priest of magical power-- hedge mages, a light golem, a garden of alchemical components, etc. Your job would be to go out and complete quests to get items to strengthen the school, and probably later to serve as inquisitors against demonic and necromantic magic.

Try a general store like a hardware store. Mops, brooms, ropes, shovels, torches, lanterns, lockpicks, gloves, boots, shirts, dresses, pants, tea pots, mugs, etc. A mix of useless and useful items for adventurers.

Most people nowadays don't understand engineering or science that well. Yet we use toasters, television sets, and other items. Technological items don't have to be understood to use them. Most aren't built for the engineers to use them until you get to more complex things like electron microscopes and other stuff.

There is no reason that simple magical items cannot be mass produced. Things like glow crystals, scrolls, books, magically waterproofed clothing, lanterns. With the amount of books and scrolls available in Avernum there probably is a magical equivalent of a printing press-- there would have to be for there to be a daily newspaper.

Harry Turtledove has a written series called The World At War, a magical equivalent of World War II, and there is magical progress-- spells and weapons become more and more powerful throughout the book. Soldiers use wands instead of rifles, and drop bombs from dragons.

One more thought-- If Empress Prazac wanted to maintain empire she would have one more enlightened policy for magic. She would set up imperial trade cities for the Vahnati and the Avernites where philosophy, goods, and magic would be exchanged. These would have ambassadors and would charter adventurers to find new trade routes for goods-- magical items and other items in Vahnati and Avernite lands.

If Empress Prazac follows the Elizabethan style-- dowager empress married to empire she could be very effective. I think she would have thought about what to do with magic after having to deal with Garzahd and her crazed brother.

Changing the power structure of the empire so it was more of a kind of constitutional monarchy -- the Emperors family becomes a figurehead with massive wealth and symbol of state and power becomes concentrated in a kind of house of lords-- superpowerful characters 50+ level who have risen through imperial ranks or service. She would retire not die. Also instituting a kind of imperial civil service similar to the Chinese Ming empire.

I can imagine her doing a number of things if she is truly enlightened.

Founding an imperial college and library for magic and research so the most powerful mages were at the center of the empire. Creating a kind of mage tax where you have to send in a certain amount of your research to the central magical repository.

Creating a secret service to deal with magical problems. Similar to the Roman Imperial Hands.

Building an alchemical registry of potions, engineering marvels, and magical items.

Empowering the Anama or an official state religious body with inquisitorial power for certain types of magic-- demonic magic and necromancy. Also developing a mind blasting potion which would turn mages who practiced this type of magic into idiots.

Creating a one way gateway for low level rebels to another world entirely not on Ermariana. Higher level characters would be obliterated by magical energy.

Creating an imperial exploratory service where she could banish troublemakers and young nobles. Essentially sending them to the borders to deal with the Vahnati, Sliths, Avernites, and unexplored areas.

Hi, all,
Was thinking about the game and the concept of progress. It has been five hundred years since the begining of Blades of Exile. There is very little technical progress. However, I think there should be magical innovations.
For example construction golems, horse golems, household golems for mages. Levitation sleds for transporting goods. I think by now there must be some of kind magical lab which produces magical items for everyday household use -- like the Edison labs. There might be things like a magical freezer chest, light emitting crystals, miracle grow magic fertilizer (this could cause major problems) , etc.
I am also assuming there is some kind of imperial bureaucracy that deals with dangerous magic because of some of the major industrial damage which has occurred, think Golem Factory, Valley of the Dying Things, and the constant need for sewer and mine cleanup operations because of infestations of giant roaches, rats, goblins, and gremlins. A kind of covert Environmental Magic Cleanup Operation.

A Raksasha is a "hungry ghost" that is a reincarnated evil spirit. It lives for vice -- think of grows stronger at night, enjoys anything nasty drugs, sex, eating other humanoids, etc. Females can marry humans. It is a shapechanger and can turn into a dog, person, or owl. They live opulently the gods have made them evil so they are not responsible for their actions in the Vedic myths. They are from India and their job is to tempt people into bad actions-- bad kamma or karma.

Summarizing so far. Things people look for:

1) A good plot.
2) Replayability.
3) Battles which are tactical and require thinking to do.-- I especially like having monsters with a variety of attacks-- poison, fire,
paralyzation, spells, disease, antimagic fields, etc.
4) Good maps which fill most of the screen. I like easter eggs a lot on the maps.
5) Unique items-- artifacts which do not use custom graphics and are not overpowered.
6) Some puzzles througout the scenario.
7) Have some moral choices to make.
8) Unique structures.
9) Things which have not been done before.
10) Skills trainers. Imban has a list of skills trainers and items. web page
