Nethergate's my favorite, easily — how can you beat Romans, inter-dimensional portals, underhanded shenanigans, snatches and counter-snatches, and a joyous jaunt through the Celtic land of the dead! My second favorite is probably the first Avernum game, mainly for the unique subterranean atmosphere created and sustained throughout the game. I'd often get claustrophobia while playing it, waiting for the massive rock ceiling to cave in on top of me, or fall through a weak point in the ground and be swept away in a freezing underground river. And Geneforge is good. Rummaging around on an island filled with ancient relics trying to uncover a dark secret while maneuvering with the various factions and learning that the Shaper way of life isn't all you were taught it was. Cracking stuff. -------------------- The A.E. van Vogt Information Site My Tribute to the Greatest Writer of the Science Fiction Golden Age Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

I think that's a great idea — in fact, I've been thinking along similar lines myself. For one thing, we saw a small amount of progress in this way with that journalist fellow in A Small Rebellion being the first of the new breed of newspayrus reporters. How do you rest? Well, the way that works for me is to lie down in a dark room, close your eyes, and try to think of nothing in particular. After ten to twenty minutes, you should be asleep. If that fails, you may try reverting to tranquilizers, or if you're really desperate, have a close friend knock you on the head with a brick. Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |
Conan vs. Drizzt in General | |

I'd have to cast my vote for Conan. Even if Drizzt hit him a few times, the scent of his own blood would merely send him into a Cimmerian rage. After all, Conan is so tough that if he were eaten by Cthulhu Himself, he would merely come out the other end screaming and pulling torn and bloody intestines out after him. A perfect Kodak moment for Conan. EDIT: By the way, did someone mention Musashi earlier? Wasn't that the main character in the Samurai Trilogy, i.e., Duel at Ganryu Island, and so on? The recently released SF movie "Alien vs. Predator" got me to thinking what the fantasy equivalent would be. Maybe "Conan vs. Drizzt"? Who would win such a match? Granted, Drizzt has two swords and various helpful magic spells, while on the other hand Conan is pure muscle on top of pure muscle and, if Howard's stories are anything to go by, is virtually invincible. (And for the sake of simplicity, let's leave Guenhwyvar out of this...) Who has the superior skills, or are they equal? Would the contest be a stalemate? Would one win simply through sheer luck? Place your bets! EDIT: This is of course a moot topic, since two "good guys" would probably either work together or leave each other alone. Mung demons are the most annoying — especially in the first Avernum game. All they do is stand there, zapping your priest with mind-sucking rays that make it impossible for him to do anything aside from shooting off the occasional badly-aimed arrow. We really need that high level Repel Spirit, and Mass Healing! Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

Regarding the crones, if I remember correctly, the stone guards appear and block your re-entry after you escape, not just after you kill the one crone next to the Spire of Ages. I don't think there's any difference between the Caverns' set-up before and after the one crone gets killed. Jeff expected us to keep going on towards the Spire, rather than turn around and check for continuity glitches. Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

I have two cats, both ladies — one who's almost 20 years old named Calico (who is a calico cat, naturally), and one black-and-beige named Alice who's almost 15. Both are in excellent health, I'm happy to say, and are the most darling creatures on God's Green Earth. We used to have a Pekingese named Leo who died a year and a half ago due to kidney stones. He was really just a furry little marshmallow — sweet, well-tempered, and did little but sleep. An affectionate, semi-mobile rug. I usually have some piece of SF artwork adorning my Macintosh desktop. Usually something by Paul Lehr, Richard Powers, or some Doctor Who picture, but at the moment it's a Todd Lockwood painting: http://www.pen-paper.net/albums/Todd_Lockwood/Iron.sized.jpg Andrew Hunter is another favorite (surprise, surprise!). Aside from his startup screens for the Spiderweb games, he has a few posted on his website, such as: http://www.wormwoodstudios.com/sky.jpg -------------------- The A.E. van Vogt Information Site My Tribute to the Greatest Writer of the Science Fiction Golden Age Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

I've almost finished reading R.A. Salvatore's "Exile", the second book in his Dark Elf Trilogy. I found it rather amusing that when I got to the part where the illithid keep mind-blasting the slaves and Zaknafein, I kept hearing vlish sound-effects from the Geneforge games. The book has "Fwoop!" but I keep hearing "Grrraaaht!" and "Arrnnnnannn!" (Please excuse the poor phoenetic renderings.) -------------------- The A.E. van Vogt Information Site My Tribute to the Greatest Writer of the Science Fiction Golden Age Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

There may be all this confusion about whose quote that is, whether it be Adams or Jones, because although Douglas Adams wrote the Starship Titanic game, Terry Jones novelized it. Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

It's 80 MB or so, making it impossible for me to download using dial-up — so even if they have fixed it on their website, it's effectively unavailable to me. Boo-hoo. And about Master of Orion II: I enjoy playing as the Silicoids, since they don't need food and are immune to industrial waste. The repulsive disadvantage doesn't bother me that much — when dealing with other races, I just have to put extra butter on their toast in the form of harmless technology gifts. Besides, the Silicoids are nifty-looking and made of rock! How much cooler can you get? Master of Orion II is way, way more complicated than the first one. The manual is quite big, and the whole set up is frightfully complex. After playing it on Tutorial difficulty, with most of the options turned off, and being toasted the first few times regardless I sort of gave up on it for a few days. But I came back after reading more of the manual, and finally am getting the hang of it. But boy oh boy, is it complicated! But it also has a lot of depth to it — much more than the first game — and the graphics are great. But I was rather appalled that the interface for this one was even worse than for the first. Still, all in all, a wise buy for 99 cents — although I did have to pay $8 for shipping and handling! By the way, I too would probably be playing EV Nova like a junkie if I could get that DANGBLASTED SIT FILE TO UNSTUFF PROPERLY! Ambrosia is terrible about "customer service," having failed fix it or reply to my queries. Anybody else have troulbe unstuffing it? It'll decompress the documentation and one or two of the data files, and then stop due to some incomprehensible error. Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |
