I had to use an invulnerablity potion to get rid of those efreeti in Khoth's Palace, and even so I had to do that battle two or three times.

On my second time through the Run, I tried to take on Morog and Khoth, but quickly learned within the first few moves that even as a level 25+ party, it wasn't going to be very likely. So instead I just looked through the town script and dialogue files to see what would happen if you DID defeat them...

Not exactly cheating, but it did save quite a bit of effort!

Lacking the artisitic talent to create such items for myself, I was wondering if somebody out there could fix up a couple of custom item graphics for me.

1. Kilt — nice plaid design, maybe red and black. Need two graphics, one for the floor, one for the get/inventory windows.

2. Bagpipes — similar plaid design, maybe a different color scheme than the kilt. Also needs two graphics.

You can go ahead and put these four graphics in their own sheet. The sheet number doesn't matter, I can fix that later with ResEdit.

Much obliged!

PS - Don't worry, my scenario does NOT take place in the Scottish highlands. That would be silly. The scenario takes place in a region where kilts and pipes were used hundreds of years previously.

scenario criticism in Blades of Avernum

I haven't kept up with how people rate the scenarios, because I dislike critics in general. I enjoyed VoDT and DwtD less than the other two, but I did still enjoy them, and I think it would be a wee bit unreasonable to tear them to shreds just because they're not supersuperb. They're fun, and that's what counts.

If/when I finish my scenario, I'm going to make a point of ignoring unjust criticisms. I wouldn't mind being told of bugs to fix, and productive advice for improvements, but some people seem to think that they have to beat something down to show how intelligent they are.

Yes, I had lots of trouble with that scenario, and had to do many battles over and over again. I did eventually beat the Haakai, though. Also had lots of trouble trying to get the Melora Opal.

After I beat it, I went through it again with my party at level 25, and it was about the difficulty level it should've been the first tme through.

But apart from that, I enjoyed the very linear approach and the story was quite good. I also greatly enjoyed exploring previously unseen regions of Avernum.

By the way, what does "RNG" mean?

Yes, you're correct, and I was mistaken.

I'm pretty new to this whole graphics-tinkering business, and I just realized that I had no trouble with custom scenario icons in dialogue situations, and haven' t yet tested it when trying to enter a scenario

My sincerest apologies!

EDIT: And I also apologize for the double-posting. This has been happening a lot to me lately when I only push the button once, and I have no idea why.

Hmmm. That's peculiar. I was tinkering around with ResEdit and put in a few "custom" graphics into the scenario's .cmg file just to test if I understood how to do it correctly, and it worked out fine.

Did you make sure the scenario icon was 64x64? If it's of the wrong dimensions, BoA won't process it.

I noticed in A Small Rebellion that mention was made of "the Emperor." Since this took place in 855, when did Prazac's reign end? How did it end? Was she killed, deposed, or did she die of natural causes?

I ask because I intend to use Prazac in my scenario, and I'd like to keep details of her reign consistent with the established "facts."

I sided with the Empire for the duration of the game first time through just because Stalker seemed to be a bit of a terrorist to me.

I guess felt more comfortable aligning myself with government-sanctioned murderers than freelance murderers, however just the rebels' cause might be.

Choosing between two evils... and the Empire seemed to be the more "stable" evil.

Thanks for both of your helpful and illuminating responses.

I've made it a bit further reading through the main editor documentation PDF, and just finished reading the section on graphic sheets. I even followed his suggestion of looking at the graphics files in ResEdit — wow! It's great to be able to see all the graphics in the game! I'm amazed at the number and variety of them — looks like I won't have to create any graphics of my own for my scenario, which is very good since I have no artistic talent.

I also dug around in the stealth.cmg, valley.cmg, etc. files in ResEdit, and sure enough, there were the pictures for Jaen and Stalker, and that delicious apple pie. Boy, that pie looks good! I also took a look at the Nethergate graphics files. It's nice just to look at all the items and terrains, if nothing else. I see that there are quite a few Geneforge graphics in Blades, apart from those pesky mines.

Yes, Andrew Hunter's work on these games is great — I've written him two or three times and he's been able to give me picture files of the startup screens from various Spiderweb games. They make for excellent desktop pictures. Phil Foglio's art, especially on the character statistics screen, is also excellent, and I always look forward to seeing his drawings for various skills with each game.

EDIT: Sorry about the double-post. I have no idea how that happened!

I think the scenario icons and icons for special characters (seen on pages 14-15 of the BoA Editor Docs Appendices.pdf), are a great addition to the Avernum games, and look forward to using the character ones in my scenario.

However, in the scenario "A Small Rebellion" both Stalker and Jaen have these character graphics, but I don't see them shown in the Appendix. Are there graphics above #1967, that are not listed there for some reason? Or did Jeff cook these up just for this scenario?

I think you can only enter that area if you have aligned yourself with the Empire for the whole game, and visit Stalker's Fort when you're sent there to assassinate him. If you do that, you'll also see why they refused you admittance — there be very dangerous goings-on in there!

To me, it's good on sandwiches, but without a bunch of beef and a tasty bun, the very idea becomes unbearable.

EDIT: I just remembered that he's also started going to Indian restaurants regularly and getting the super-spicy variety of everything. He says the goal is go get his gastro-intestinal tract burning and his eyes watering like an Italian fountain. Again, for me a modest of amount of curry, etc, creates a nice tingly sensation but too much is asking for trouble.

I had no idea they could get away with such things. By and large, though, I stick with the Tropicana straight-from-the-orange-with-nothing-else-but-orange-in-it variety of orange juice. But do not credit me with wisdom and foresight — I'm just a fruit fiend, and you can't get any better than straight fruit, whether it be juice, preserves, or just regular off-the-vegetation fresh and intact.

And speaking of long-term effects of things — one of my relatives was an engineer with NASA for many years, and he's convinced that Alzheimers is related to our intake of aluminum via soda cans. I wouldn't be surprised if this were indeed the case.

And yes, I try to avoid being around microwaves when they're activated, as well as cell-phones, radio broadcasting antennae, etc. It's no wonder there's so much illness around nowadays with all the harmful things running through our bodies all the time.

Seems to me that it affects the taste of milk, giving it a spoilt cottage-cheese kind of flavor. And I don't quite want to imagine what it may be doing to my genetic structure when I drink it. I may end up siring two-headed children.

And what's wrong with the way normal cows give milk, anyway? Why do we have to fill them with extra hormones just to make more money? Why push Nature in strange directions? Aren't we taking enough risks as it is with the strange new chemicals in our foods? Why take extra chances?

And, above all, why spoil a nice glass of milk?

IMAGE(rBST Boon or Bane_files/confused.gif)

I take my milk seriously. Guzzle it by the gallon. And I don't believe any of the FDA propoganda either, that says rBST is perfectly safe. It's pernicious filth that ruins my daily breakfast experience.

I think we should give medals to farmers who don't use rBST.
